HMMMM, no word from Public Option now that the mark-ups have come and gone, and there is no 'public option' marked in the bill... looks like the Dems are going to have to go it alone if they want this bill passed in it's current state.... not too many Repubs are going to side with the Dems on this one... I guess we will have to wait and see.

To Ben on your comment about the comparison of health insurance and auto insurance:

I agree, however we need to point out that you are only required to purchase auto insurance if you desire to own and drive a vehicle. You can 'opt out' by taking public transportation or 'co-op' by having one vehicle for two or more adults. This isn't possible under the mandatory health insurance clause. Also, you auto insurance does not cover preventative maintenance, breakdown, etc. It is limited to the chance of a single unlikely but possible circumstance, a collision. Mandatory health insurance, on the other hand, would be designed to take complete control of your health. As such, it has a statistically much higher probability of being used, and therefore going to be at a much higher cost to the consumer. I have repeatedly asked the same question on this blog, and have yet to get a response: Why are we concentrating on making health insurance affordable instead of looking at ways to make the desired end, health care itself, more affordable?

If you go to the website that Public Option posted, click on the 'press release' button on the left-hand side of the screen, then on 'Max Baucus', you can see his press releases. Under '9-16-09' you will see 'Text of America's Healthy Future Act' This is a .pdf format, down-loadable, and you will see EXACTLY what Baucus is proposing. The markups are not yet posted, as the meeting has likely not been transcribed.

And another simple question, why is it punishable by tax to purchase or offer a golden health plan? It's the American way to work hard and buy whatever level you are capable of buying. People need to start asking why the government is explicitly trying to LOWER the quality of the deluxe plans by proposing a surcharge TAX?

I'm a bit on the extreme side and think we should cut off all subsidies and provide a clear cut "opt out" for participation is a lot of federal programs. I'd love to opt out of Social Security and get a refund of 100% of my and my employers "contributions" (a tax according to Websters) and invest that into a ROTH account. The same would go for health insurance. Give me a 100% tax credit to go and buy a private plan and I will. Create an incentive (100% tax CREDIT no income limit) to buy health insurance and the insurance companies will piss themselves to sign up new participants.

No Cynthia, there will be no reform because the country cannot afford it right now and Americans aren't too keen on being told what they "must" buy or be penalized if they don't buy it. It's too late for Obama to sell his snake oil because the longer the topic is debated and the more people hear from him and his handlers the less inclined they're going to be to accept it.

Also somebody made an analogy of requiring people to buy health insurance on the same line as being required to buy auto insurance; well there's no comparison because auto insurance concerns are handled on the state level not by unelected federal bureaucrats as is being proposed.
