The Hall County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the discovery of human remains found Thursday in a park bathroom.
Hall sheriff’s Sgt. Stephen Wilbanks said a crew hired to clean up Chestnut Ridge Park in south Hall County found the remains about 2 p.m., wrapped in a blanket inside one of the bathrooms.
Chestnut Ridge Park is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property that was closed to the public several years ago, Wilbanks said. The park is currently under a long-term lease by the Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority, but has remained closed.
Wilbanks said that due to the “advanced stage of decomposition,” investigators were unable to determine “anything regarding gender, age or identity.”
He said the remains had apparently been there “for an extended period of time.”
The remains were taken to the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy.
