Florida State QB Jameis Winston, the Heisman Trophy winner, was issued a civil citation for shoplifting crab legs and other groceries from a Publix, law enforcement authorities say.
Winston ordered food from the deli counter and left the store without paying, Leon County Sheriff’s Maj. Michael Wood said in a news conference on Wednesday.
He told police that he “forgot” to pay for the $32.72 worth of groceries.
“He was very cooperative and he seemed fairly honest in that he did not pay for the item,” Wood said.
Winston was not arrested when police arrived at his residence around midnight and must complete at least 20 hours of community service. He will not face criminal charges if he completes the terms of the civil diversion.
Of course, Winston’s indiscretion didn’t go unnoticed.
Winston, who also pitches for the FSU baseball team, was suspended by coach Mike Martin.
“I fully support Coach Martin’s decision and will also make sure that Jameis meets all obligations, which I know he will,” FSU football coach Jimbo Fisher said in a release.
Winston threw for 4,057 yards and 40 TDs and 10 interceptions as a redshirt freshman, leading the Seminoles to the national championship.
