Bobo not a good fit for Georgia Southern

Mike Bobo has been mentioned in connection with the head coaching vacancy at Georgia Southern.

And while Bobo has done an admirable job as Georgia’s offensive coordinator — I know, a lot of UGA fans would love to see him go somewhere — Bobo wouldn’t be a good fit at Georgia Southern.

AD Tom Kleinlein has said he wants someone who buys into Georgia Southern traditions — the school buses, Beautiful Eagle Creek, etc. — including running the triple option that has powered most of the school’s offenses through the years.

“Now, does that mean they need to come in here and do all of those things?” Kleinlein told the Statesboro Herald. “I’m going to leave that up to him. I know, when I sit down and talk to him, that if we’re not doing some of those things, he better have a really good reason why.”

Bobo has shown great ability to adapt and adjust to the rapidly changing world of college offenses, but he’s spent the past several years building a versatile, multifaceted offense at Georgia that revolves around a pro-style QB.

But Georgia Southern is moving to the FBS Sun Belt, so maybe it’s looking for a new offense to go with its new surroundings.

Also, I don’t know if Bobo has the right personality or desire to perform all that’s demanded of a head coach.

“I think he likes it here,” Georgia coach Mark Richt told the Athens Banner-Herald. “I think he understands being a head coach is a lot different than being a coordinator.”

Here’s a list of other Georgia Southern candidates.

Agree. He ought to hold out for a mid tier ACC job in the next year or so at a lotttttttttttt more money. Southern will pay around $850K. NC State or such would pay 1.5 to 2 mil per. Bobo has earned it. Lot’ssssssssssss of NFL jobs open ( Assit) and Grantham knows he’s on thin ice. I imagine if a NEW HC in the NFL came calling at say 500-600K for a DL position coach, he would take it. He knows without some big improvement on defense he’s gone. So, he ain’t got the IT factor, so he;ll leave for less money in a new NFL tenure HC situation. Wow, Dawgs could be without a OC AND DC in the next 2-3 weeks. Hang on.

There was once another UGA Coordinator who took the jump down to Georgia Southern you may have heard of him…. Erk Russell!!!!

The whole Georgia Southern tradition of the triple option is going to have to end if Georgia Southern ever wants to have a big time program, which is the reason for the jump. Bobo has a great resume at UGA and can bring a lot of things to Georgia Southern. Spend the money to get him, if you are going to make a jump, make it with a splash!!!!

This might read more what is wrong with Georgia than what is going on with Georgia Southern. Old Irk Russell probably never thought of going to Georgia Southern either but once there might have proven he was more than a journeyman assistant coach.

Southern wouldn’t be a good move for Bobo unless he wants a lower profile job for his first HC position. I am not saying the Southern job is a bad one. It just isn’t high profile outside of the state of Georgia (or the Gainesville Florida area :-0) He couldn’t definitely hold out for another mid-level program. I don’t see an SEC team hiring him as a HC unless he has a winning resume as HC from another school. Oh, and if Southern really wants to grow, they have to dump the triple option. See the North Avenue Trade School if you need an reason why.

There was once another UGA Coordinator who took the jump down to Georgia Southern you may have heard of him…. Brian Van Gorder.

I don’t think Bobo is the Van Gorder sort, and while I love the GSU triple option am not opposed to something new. Would be glad to have him. However, I think if he does well, he’s not there very long.

Bobo needs to hold out. GA Southern is a waste if you don’t run a triple option. BVG took that job and his career has had him float around but never really excel since being canned within a year. He’s floated around since leaving Athens while never having a job better than the defensive coordinator, the job he could have kept long-term in Athens. Now he’s having to do the same job in Indiana.

Chris Hatcher was a rising star in coaching whose name was coming up every time there was an opening at a mid-tier school or for OC at a big-name school. He was dominating the Gulf South Conference at Valdosta State running the Air Raid offense developed by Hal Mumme that has been successful at Kentucky, Texas Tech and now Washington State. His staff members at the time included Will Muschamp and Kirby Smart running the Black Swarm defense.

Since that time, Muschamp and Smart went on to bigger roles by going the coordinator route at bigger named schools. Muschamp has a prized job now, even if he isn’t doing so well at it. Smart is doing the right thing by waiting for the right opportunity and not jumping at the wrong vacancy just to be a head coach. Hatcher went to Ga Southern, wasn’t given the time to transition the program, and hasn’t been considered for a big job since. He now coaches at Murray State. His former underlings have far surpassed him.

Bobo needs to wait for Smart to take the Texas or Alabama job (when Saban retires) and go work for his buddy. He needs to run the offense at a big-name program that is not Georgia (preferably bigger brand than Georgia). Georgia fans don’t appreciate the prolific offenses he has produced and instead want to second guess everything he does. The Dawgs lose 45-42 and the blame goes to Bobo for running too many draw plays (which is a necessary part of the offense and actually works quite a bit) instead of to the defense for giving up 45 points. The guy wins national coordinator of the year award and Georgia fans want him gone. It makes no sense.

When he produces outside of Athens and Smart/Texas wins the national championship which Texas should compete for every year with the talent in that State, Bobo will be considered for whatever job he wants.

If Southern wants to continue to grow they need to junk the high school offense unless they are happy with being 7-5 or 8-4 at best every year. Tech is the perfect example of this.

Bobo can recruit and he’s a South Georgia boy. I think he’ll do fine there if he were to make the change.

GSU isn’t going to pay 800k a year. Unless someone on this BLOG wants to Donate enough to cover the difference. Our budget max is around 500k per year- Our last coach made 400k before leaving to go to Army, “rumored” to have asked for 700k to remain our coach, and we all know how that turned out. Brent Davis( Current OC @ GSU), Pry @ Vanderbilt(Wishful thinking) , or the OC @ Navy are more likely options-One of the offensive coach’s @ Baylor would be intriguing. Stay Tuned-

Georgia Southern did not call Bobo up and ask him to come in for an interview. If he is indeed going to be interviewed for this job, it’s because he must have some interest. I don’t personally believe he is a good fit, not because of the to, but the basic pro-style offense that he runs and does very well with at UGA. GS is going to open it up a little and try to be more diverse, which may be why Monken left. He knew his offense is more suited to a military school than an fbs school that wants to succeed at a higher level. Lashley, from Auburn, has also been interviewed and in my mind would be a better fit for where we hope to go into the future, not totally leaving the to behind but incorporating it into a bigger scheme.

The money is one thing…uprooting his young family for less money and even more responsibility is questionable as well. He would be absentee for months while trying to get a program off the ground. He doesn’t have the QB to run his system so he’d have to totally terraform his offensive philosophy as well.

No it’s not a good fit but Southern has to try. I’m not sure Bobo is ready for that move yet. With GSU going into the FBS next year he might need to cut his teeth at a lower level before making the jump. The timing of it all looks like a setup to struggle for a bit.

Anybody that is expecting any OC to make perfect calls every play know ZERO about football.

If you knew anything about football then you’d know that there are “bad calls” and “failed plays”. A bad call is an alignment mismatch… running into a stacked line with a full run stunt going with 4 wides. A failed play is 1 or more guys missing assignments and the play doesn’t work specifically because of poor execution.

NO OC makes the perfect call even 80 or 90% of the time. Good calls fail and bad calls sometimes work in spite of everything. Auburn runs a pretty potent offense, right? They execute pretty well, right? They have a really good offensive philosophy, right? Then how come, with all that screams offensive guru, Georgia was able to shutdown that attack for most of the 4th quarter of that game? A poor Georgia defense at that? The genius made some poor calls and his team didn’t execute the good calls. If they’d lost… he’d have been raked over the coals folks. Instead, they win on a fuke play and everyone forgets that they blew a giant lead.

MIke Bobo is as good as 99% of all the OC’s in college football. He makes some really smart calls and he makes some not so hot calls…just like everybody else.

Losing Coach Bobo would hurt Georgia badly. We have enough on our plate without that folks.

It would be a step down for him in his career.

Now if he were to leave for a HC position at a school that has a history of Division 1 play then it would be a good move.

But GSU is just moving to Division 1 so it is a risky venture at best.

I would hope he would take the same route as Mark Richt and take a head coaching job at a major college with a broad base fan support that has struggled in recent years.

Schools that come to mind where the coach will eventually either choose to move on or will be forced to might include: NC State, Kentucky, UNC, Vanderbilt, Florida, West Virginia, Maryland, Arkansas, SMU, or UCF.

He could probably also get a HC job out in the Mountaian West Conference like Urban Meyer and Pat Dye did before possibly moving back South

Nothing against GSU, but Bobo can do better and deserves better. He also needs to stay with the pro set since he has had so much success with it.

Why wouldn’t he like it at UGA. He’s got a cush job making very good money and Head coach that allows him to be mediocre at play calling and shields him from criticism from the fan base. Unfortunately, the young defense will probably grow up and perform better next next, but the offense will regress, leaving UGA short again next year. I think Southern can do better than 6-6 every year and if they stick with the triple option that’s about where they will be. The really good years they might be 8-4. Nearly every time you play teams with better athletes you will lose. And you won’t have the best athletes on offense because the best athletes don’t want to play in that offense. And the best defensive players don’t want to have their knees taken out in practice every day. See Georgia Tech. Tech has about the best talent you are going to see on a team running that offense. I think Southern can be better than Tech if they change their offense.

Scott-Wealey, just to name a few, and still finished fifth in scoring offense in the conference. Fire Bobo? Reporter is dead on…UGA fans are the worst in the conference, and with Bama and LSU in the SEC, that’s saying something.

Sanh Dawg where do you get your attendance figures? This year attendance was down some because the stadium is a construction zone AND we wren’t eligible for either the conference title or post season play.
Here are the FCS attendance numbers for 2012 http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/2012/Internet/attendance/FCS_AVGATTENDANCE.pdf

Ga Southern averaged 18,487 in a stadium that seats 18,000.
that includes a playoff game against Central Arkansas that came during the Thanksgiving break when the campus was empty and drew less than 9,000.
For the regular season Southern averaged around 20,000.

The biggest problem with Paul Johnson is that he has not been able to get the QB he needs. I often wonder if GSU will be able to get enough quality athletes to compete year in and year out. I can see where fans would like a new adventure but I just don’t know if there are enough athletes and enough fans (40,000 a game that it will take). There will be good and bad years I am afraid, just like Duke, this is one of their great years.

The Cleveland Browns have an opening at head coach. Don’t know if Bobo would want a 1-year job, though. Their truck-stop magnate owner isn’t the kind of guy you want to work for.

Bobo would be a great fit for GA Southern. He is a master at offense and he can recruit in south GA as good as anyone. The problem is not Bobo, it is the high school offense that GA Southern wants to keep. GA Southern will never be able to recruit great athletes with the option. GA Southern will always look lost at EVERY phase of the game with that offense. With that offense, you are masterful at handling the ball but totally inept at anything else. GA Tech and GA Southern are jokes when it comes to even attempting to pass the ball.

Receivers die in GA Southern and GA Tech.

That offense died in the 70’s. It’s not new. It’s has been tried and tried. It will not work at the highest levels of any football. Just think…..36,000 fans flock into GA Tech every game just to get a glimsp of those beautiful attempted passes.

“Mike Bobo has been mentioned in connection with the head coaching vacancy at Georgia Southern.”

First I’ve heard of that. Bobo could be a good fit at GSU — if they’re willing to dump that gimmick offense. It would take a while to recruit for a different system, but you’ve got to take the plunge eventually. Now is as good a time as any.

When hiring a new football coach the AD selection committee shouldn’t be telling candidates what offense to run. Hire a great teache/coach let him hire a great staff and let the coaches coach, including the offensive and defensive systems they will use. My dad became a long time AD after 25 years as a successful coach, having been a coach no good coach would take a job if his employer was going to dictate to him the system he was to use.

Just to be fair, maybe UGA is hiding an injury to Hudson Mason’s shoulder. If so, put in another QB and play our offense. If not, I will be glad to head up the moving committee to get rid of this idiot, Bobo.

No Georgia Southern fan wants anyone else from UGA to coach their team.We got the best and only one you had(Erk) we we started.Since then we have won 6 NCs to Georgia’s none with our offense, but Georgia fans think everything associated with there team is top notch including their worthless coaching staff. No thanks. That includes your non wining head coach.

I love how the AJC headlines anti-GaSouthern news…typical. I can tell you one thing, I wouldn’t be excited for this Georgia old-school offense to come to Statesboro. True that we are entrenched in the TO but need to add some passing game to it. What has Ga done with all that talent they recruit? Unless Bobo is absolutely interested in doing those things I don’t want him.

1, UGA is the most under performing D1 football and basketball school in history. When one looks at the state of Georgia’s talent pool and with only one general studies university, UGA should have at least 6 NCs since 1980. Dooley was NOT a great coach – sheer talent and Hershel Walker are the only reasons he has one NC.

2. The Triple option offensive is not Tech’s main issues. A True QB who can operate the offensive i,e,; Tracy Ham is. Next, the defensive sucks and it offensive should have no bearing on recruiting defensive players. PJ has to solve these issues before Tech can move to the next level.

3. Both GSUs can have successful programs if they simply get the players in Georgia who are 10 lbs too light and/or a step slow coming out of High School. These players are currently going to out of state mid majors and to the Dukes/ Vanderbilt’s now.

Good Luck Tech and the GSUs, unfortunately UGA’s leaders and fans are too arrogant to accept the facts – too much money, talent, facilities to be irrelevant!

Why doesn’t GSU go after Charlie Taffe? Taffe is the current OC at Central Florida and was OC at MD, Winningest head coach at The Citadel. He was also a head coach in the CFL. He’s 63 but he could start GSU in the right direction for the BCS for the first 4-6 years..

Ctfalconsfan, good call, sounds like you really thought about it. I think Taffe could be a good hire as well. 63 years old, chances are he wouldn’t jump ship if successful. I wish our AD would take a look at him. Ga Southern played against Citadel when he was there I believe, so he’ll know our tradition. UCF looked really good last night. FBS needs a playoff…..
