SEC coaches pick Manziel, McCarron as top QBs

Johnny Manziel is the coaches’ pick for their All-SEC first-team QB, but they put Alabama’s AJ McCarron on the second team, ahead of Georgia’s Aaron Murray.

The teams were released this afternoon.

Murray was the QB on the AP’s All-SEC second team, behind Manziel, who was first team on both.

Here are their stats, which were also in yesterday’s post.

Their numbers

Manziel: 270-of-391 for 3,732 yards, 33 TDs, 13 INTs; 686 rush yards, 8 TDs

Murray: 225-of-347 for 3,075, 26 TDs, 9 INTs in 11 games; 7 TDs rushing

McCarron: 207-of-306 for 2,676 yards, 26 TDs, 5 INTs

Georgia’s Todd Gurley was on the AP’s second team, but is not on either of the coaches’ teams. The coaches picked Auburn’s Tre Mason and Alabama’s T.J. Yeldon for the first team and LSU’s Jeremy Hill and South Carolina’s Mike Davis for the second.

Georgia TE Arthur Lynch, LB Ramik Wilson and K Marshall Morgan are on the first team.

South Carolina DE Jadevon Clowney was on the first team for both the AP and the coaches. Alabama had nine players on both teams, including a league-leading five on the first team.

PS

It is instructive to look at the SEC “Best” players and All-SEC selections to see how many of them played high school football in Georgia.

UGA could field a NC team if they could just get half of the high school talent in the state. No, make that just a third. As it is, it is around 13 percent…

Whose fault is that? Certainly not the head coach, Mark Richt… He’s such a religious man…
