Auburn gets SI cover: Will jinx apply?

Auburn’s Chris Davis, making his return heard ’round the world, is on the cover of this week’s Sports Illustrated.

Missouri fans hope that means the magazine’s famous jinx will visit the other Tigers in Saturday’s SEC Championship game.

SEC proponents might want to take note that Ohio State QB Braxton Miller is on a regional SI cover, just in time for the Big Ten title game.

The SEC has won seven consecutive national titles, but might need Michigan State to defeat the second-ranked Buckeyes to have a shot at another. With Florida State sitting at No. 1 and a huge favorite in the ACC title game against Duke, the SEC needs either No. 3 Auburn, No. 4 Alabama or No. 5 Missouri to jump Ohio State in the final BCS Standings.

SI takes the myth of the cover jinx so seriously, it crunched the numbers in January 2002.

We made the following broad findings: Of the 2,456 covers SI had run, 913 featured a person who, or team that, suffered some verifiable misfortune that conformed to our definition—a Jinx rate of 37.2%. The majority of those instances (52.7%) were bad losses or lousy performances by a team, followed by declines in individual performance (44.6%), bad loss or lousy performance by an individual (25.2%), postseason failure (13.4%), injury or death (11.8%) and blunder or bad play (4.6%).

More recently, Baltimore QB Joe Flacco beat the cover curse when the Ravens knocked off New England in the AFC Championship game last winter. Last spring, the Chicago Blackhawks were the first NHL team to make a SI national cover since 2010 and they went onto to win the Stanley Cup in June.

Auburn has enjoyed miraculous plays to win its past two games.

Certainly the Tigers won’t let a little thing like the jinx to stop them now.

Hey Buckeye….your team couldn’t hold any team in the SEC’s jockstraps….what a puff schedule Ohio St. plays……you ought to be embarrassed……come spout your BS when they start playing some teams with talent and beating them….until then you are just a laughing stock on these blogs and show your ass everyday with how much you don’t know!

No jinxes, no miracles, no destiny, no luck, no hope. However, outcomes can be affected by humans thinking about such stuff, individually or collectively. That’s some heavy existential stuff argued about for over 3,000 years.

Bo over the top…the ONLY reason he wasn’t charged was because Mark Richt saved his ass and kicked him and the two other players off the team and out of Georgia instead of pressing charges….Richt did them a favor……..Nick Marshall is still a THIEF !…..when you steal from your teammates what does that tell you a bout his character?….he’s a THIEF……and judging by his interview on TV after the game…..he needs to learn how to speak….he sounds like a dumb ass…..but I know all you Auburn fans are proud of him….everyone else is laughing at you behind your back!

Hurst doesn’t it Adman. You can call him a thief but he was never charged just kicked off team. Its ok for UGA players to sit in there dorms and smoke weed though and just get a two game suspension.
Maybe UGA has a problem keeping there kids inline!!!!!!!

Auburn is led by a QB who is a THIEF…..their fans should be ashamed that he’s their QB…Auburn is also a VERY LUCKY team who shouldn’t be in playing in the SEC title game…..Missouri will slap them down where they belong!
