Marshall grows into Auburn QB job

I had my doubts about Nick Marshall.

I knew Marshall was fast and had a great arm and was a tremendous athlete, but I thought he’d struggle in his first year as Auburn’s QB, as I wrote in August.

The defenses would be too fast, too quick, too formidable for Marshall to overcome. He threw 20 interceptions as a starter at Garden City (Kan.) CC in 2012, leading me to believe his accuracy wasn’t up to SEC standards.

OK, I was wrong.

Marshall has been a perfect fit for Gus Malzahn’s run-oriented offense and has quickly become one of the most efficient QBs in the SEC, if not the nation. He’s not asked to pass often, but he’s been accurate enough, throwing seven TD passes and no interceptions in the past seven games.

And combine those numbers with his running, Marshall has a combined 17 TDs (three fumbles, no picks) in Auburn’s eight-game winning streak, which began with a 30-22 win over Ole Miss on Oct. 5.

Marshall triggered the SEC’s leading run game, passing when needed.

Tre Mason leads the conference with 1,317 yards and 18 TDs, and Marshall has 922 to go with 10 TDs on the ground. He’ll surely surpass 1,000 for the season with two more remaining games.

For the season, Marshall is 11th in Total QBR among FCS QBs.

And just think, he was held out of Auburn’s 62-3 win over Western Carolina with a knee injury.

It staggers the imagination to think how much better the dawgs would have been if that idiot Richt had’t driven off Marshall and Mettenberger. Instead we got Hurry Murray, Mr. Loser.
