Surprising SEC title game set: Missouri vs. Auburn

The SEC Championship game is set.

And what a surprising pair of teams are headed to Atlanta.

Raise your hands if you thought Auburn would play Missouri for the SEC title at the beginning of the season.

Not me. No chance. I mean those teams were a combined 2-14 in the conference last year.

But that’s exactly what we have after a pair of Tigers earned their way to the SEC Championship game next Saturday at the Georgia Dome.

Missouri (11-1) knew all it had to do was defeat Texas A&M on Saturday night. But not even Johnny Football could lift the Aggies.

Instead, the Tigers scored a late touchdown on Henry Josey’s 57-yard run and defeated Texas A&M 28-21 to join Auburn, which defeated Alabama 34-28 in the most improbable of ways earlier in the day.

So much for South Carolina (10-2), which had finished the SEC part of its schedule and spent Saturday night knocking off sixth-ranked Clemson.

So now we have it.

No Alabama. No Georgia. No LSU. No South Carolina.

The 22nd rendition of SEC Championship game will feature Missouri (11-1), which is in its second year in the SEC, and Auburn (11-1), which rolled over South Carolina on its way to winning the national title in 2010.

Four months ago, who would have thought it?

That is the matchup I wanted to see, starting at mid-season. Got a real power shift in the SEC going on.

It’s sad when the leghumper goons measure their success by beating the outmanned student-athletes from Georgia Tech, but that’s the pathetic truth about Richt and his gang of thugs and illiterates. Georgia will never – repeat… never – be good enough to win the SEC, much less the BCS with wannabe coaches and the me-first mentality of the dummies they recruit.

Good grief..Does it hurt that bad? Outmanned students from Georgia Tech? If Tech would hire a coach who could recruit you could put better talent on the field… Inspite of all of Georgia’s injuries,a second string quarterback,a bad defense and a 20 point lead Tech couldnt find a way to win..Sounds to me like the wanna be coaches and illiterates were on the Tech sideline..

Mike Slive has to be beside himself right now..If Alabama or Auburn is not number two when the BCS comes out this evening his feelings are really going to be hurt..

That’s why u play the games , and that’s what makes college football special. Congrats to both. Go MIchigan State beat the Butteyes! Then Florida St would play SEC champ? Love to here Saben announce after the game it wasn’t coaching that cost Bama the game, it was that kicker and his sorry ass FG unit. What a guy.

Holy cow what a week-end in football. Georgia 5 stars beat GT’s 2 stars and walk on running back in 2 overtimes. Lot for UGA to brag about right.
Auburn another lucky win…
Buckeyes lucky win because MS gave it to them going for 2…
SEC Champions will be Auburn with x UGA QB…now that’s funny. Go War Eagles!
LSU also has very good x UGA QB…
FSU National Champs ?
Falcons last place darn it..
Braves no major moves and that means another play-off funk. Please get rid of Uggla.
Hawks seem better than last year, a wait and see for them. Go Hawks!
Love the Braves move to Cobb. Great deal for both. I hated going to the Ted.
Everyone have a Great Christmas!

Love how Tech fans mock and taunt the dog fans all year every year then tell us that we better not celebrate beating them for the 12th time in 13 years.

Lolz reading Georgia leg thumpers bragging about beating Tech. Guess that’s what happens when Auburn, LSU, Mizzu, Texas A&M and Bama have left you in the dust. Mark Richt continues to underachieve @ ThUGAly.

Most Tech fans agree that Johnson must be fired to ever compete again!

The Tigers will prevail……ok, the Auburn Tigers will prevail….and
oddly, the West champion’s campus is east of the East champion’s campus.

UGA fan now, but born and raised in Missouri, so I’ll be rooting for the Tigers! Those Tigers.

Everyone needs to keep in mind the National Championship is a myth. If a team wins the SEC and wins their bowl game they are the National Champions in my eyes.

The attempted field goal by Saban was one of the biggest coaching blunders I’ve ever seen. Sure the kid could have made the kick, but the coach has to consider the risks and clearly Saban dismissed them. When you are playing for the National Championship and you’ve done all the work all season to get to that point you don’t bet the whole season on one special teams play, you go to overtime and let your undefeated offense and defense do their thing. Saban entrusted his long distance kicker more than he did his #1 ranked offense and defense and that is just plain stupid.

What is disappointing for me is the Dawgs didn’t take enough advantage of a weaken SEC east. Who could have projected the Vols and Gators would be this bad for consecutive years. A prime opportunity for the Dawgs. Unfortunately, it was the Mizzou cats that took advantaged of the weaken league.
There’s a reason the Aggies didn’t ever content for the West. The other team remain strong.
The other issue, Malzahn immediately turns Auburn around, while we keep saying we’ll be better next year. I am a little sic of that.

@ Gp – very well said! The usual suspects show up on the UGA Sports Blog (yes, I know this is not that blog) every single day of the year trying to poke fun and spew their drivel against all things UGA and then they have the audacity to show up and try to minimize the Dawg win. Pretty pathetic and lame.

Dear Tech,

We played walkon guys, true freshman, and guys that were previously three deep on the depth chart. It was a good game but don’t start with the 2 star vs 4 and 5 star. Most years that is the difference and you need to recruit better. This year it wasn’t. Mason had never started a game and was a 3 star recruit. You had a 20 point lead and blew it. Bottom line. Best chance to beat us in years but it didn’t happen.

Move on and enjoy a good bowl game and a pretty good season.

I wonder how many Alabama fans had already bought their tickets and had hotel reservations. All the Networks got hosed this year as far as Conf champtionship games, outside of team fans who really is going to go out of their way to watch any of these 4 games.

Mizzou and Texas A&M are from a Weak conference they can’t COMPETE with the SEC teams?

Mizzou 16-8 playing in the SEC CG in 2nd year
Texas A&M 19-6 upset up some of the biggest baddest teams in the SEC in 2 years
UGa 20-6 backed into the SEC CG last year & making a living beating up the bad SEC teams for decades now.

You must not have ever been to the SEC CG……….there SEC fans of almost every team in town for the game every year. Many SEC fans know IF you wait til the teams are decided to get tickets and hotel rooms then you will be too late. I bet there are some So Carolina & UGa fans with hotel rooms and tickets too.

Sucks to be a Carolina Gamecock. For three years in a row they have beaten the SEC East Champion (UGA twice and now Mizzou) and still not made it to the SEC CG at the Dome! Spurrier has to be feeling snake bit. Hate it for him…
