Does McCarron deserve Heisman Trophy?

AJ McCarron is getting a lot of Heisman love.

A crazy heaping amount for someone who doesn’t have the blinged-out stats of Johnny Manziel or Marcus Mariota or Bryce Petty, especially since he’s coming off his first two-interception game in two years.

I like McCarron as a quarterback. I said it when I wrote he was the best QB in the SEC.

But does he deserve the Heisman, which is supposed to go to the best college football player in the land?

McCarron isn’t the best player on his team (see C.J. Mosley).

But he’s on the cover of this week’s Sports Illustrated.

And he’s now in the top three of USA Today’s Heisman’s rankings, and fifth on’s Heisman Watch.

Even Vegas is buying McCarron love.

The Bovada Sportsbook (via has McCarron at 13/2 to win the Heisman, behind FSU’s Jameis Winston (4/11) and Manziel (5/2).

McCarron has had another typically consistent season, making enough plays to put Alabama into position to win games and making few mistakes. With Chattanooga in T-town this week, his chances at winning the Heisman will hinge on a strong showing against Auburn in the Iron Bowl on Nov. 30.

Even with a win in that game, I don’t see McCarron moving past Winston, unless he self destructs at Florida next week. But that won’t happen.

And Manziel will boost or destroy his chances at a repeat depending on how he performs in two nationally televised games at LSU and Missouri to close the season.

I once thought Mariota had the Heisman on lockdown, but Oregon’s offense was proven mortal in that loss to Stanford. It’s still amazing to think that he has 25 TD passes with ZERO interceptions, though.

So, is there a Heisman in McCarron’s future?

I don’t think so, but there are 929 Heisman voters who could see the race a bit differently.

If you and Rick James were as good as you think you are at projecting what a player would do playing on a different team, then you’d be making a fortune picking games, rather than whining on a sports blog.

Being a hater is easy. You two should just stick with that. You’re obviously both quite good at it. ;-)

I always thought the the Heisman should go to the best player, period. Not the best player on the best team. Not the player whose team has the best record. Not the player whose team has on the most titles..Best player, period..Is McCarron better than Manziel or Winston? No! Is he a good college quarterback? Indeed he is but not the best..Glad I dont have to vote.

AJ is overrated…What QB wouldn’t be good behind a bunch of 5 star lineman.. He sure didn’t do much last weekend. As far as Winston he’s really good, but how can you not award to Johnny-B !! The kid is awesome!!!

McCarron is a good QB, but he is NO WAY deserves the Heisman. Put him in Kentucky’s offense and they’ll win 5 games at best. Put Johnny boy in the same offense and they’ll win 7-9 games this year.

There is NONE WORTHY of one this year.

This author sounds like a mouth breather, with a low IQ. If the Heisman trust doesn’t award Integrity and Excellence in a player, then they should re-write their own rules!

If AJ McCarron doesn’t win the Heisman this year, then this award is complete CRAP!

AJ has a hot girlfriend… Just sayin…

I don’t think he really cares about the hiesman as much as he cares about winning the NC. He is a great QB and will be a solid Sunday QB for some team. All he does is win…

AJ has 3 NC rings and playing for the 4th unlike any player before him. He would like just to be invited to New York since that was one of his goals this year.

Thanks for coming to Alabama AJ. You have been a goodun.
