Georgia Southern wins final Southern Conference game

Irving Huggins rushed for three touchdowns to lead Georgia Southern past host Elon 38-20 on Saturday, in the Eagles’ final Southern Conference game.

Kevin Ellison (Habersham Central) rushed for 186 yards and two scores, and the Eagles (6-4, 4-4 Southern Conference) finished with 398 yards on the ground and 502 total yards.

Huggins scored on three 2-yard runs and finished with 67 yards rushing. Nardo Govan (Savannah Christian) added 86 yards rushing.

Georgia Southern will join the Sun Belt Conference next season.

The Eagles won 10 Southern Conference titles after joining the conference in 1993.

Marist 33, Mercer 7

Marist’s Chuckie Looney accounted for three touchdowns and visiting Mercer committed six turnovers.

The Red Foxes (8-3, 7-1) captured a share of the Pioneer Football League title and ended Mercer’s five-game winning streak.

Marist scored the final 26 points, holding the Bears (9-2, 5-2) to 227 yards of total offense.

“We just didn’t play as well as I would have liked to give us a shot,” Mercer coach Bobby Lamb said in a release. “We forced four fumbles and couldn’t recover one, so it was just one of those days where everything bounced their way.”

Mercer entered averaging 290 yards rushing – No. 2 in the FCS – but was held to 119.

JeTarii Donald led the Bears with 91 yards rushing.

John Russ (Mill Creek), who had thrown three interceptions coming into the game, was picked off four times and sacked four times. He finished 11-of-22 for 108 yards and an 18-yard touchdown pass to Robert Brown.

Looney ran for 65 yards and two touchdowns, and threw for 146 and another score.

North Carolina A&T 41, Savannah State 14

Ricky Lewis and Tarik Cohen rushed for two touchdowns each to send the visiting Tigers to their ninth consecutive loss.

Savannah State (1-11, 0-8 MEAC) won one game for the fourth consecutive year, going 4-41 during that time.

Leon Prunty (Stockbridge), who started at quarterback for a suspended Antonio Bostick, threw for 160 yards and one touchdown. Victorian Hardison (Lovejoy) added 141 yards passing a score for the Tigers.

Edward Lackey (East Paulding) caught seven passes for 99 yards and a touchdown.

Cohen rushed for 98 yards on 10 carries and Lewis Kindle was 14-for-15 for 234 yards and a touchdown for N.C. A&T (6-4, 3-4).
