Georgia Southern pulls out victory

Kevin Ellison scored on a 4-yard run with 1:59 remaining to lift host Georgia Southern to a 28-21 victory over The Citadel on Saturday.

Jerick McKinnon (Sprayberry) rushed for a season-high 198 yards and two touchdowns, and Ellison (Habersham Central) added a season-high 135 yards for the Eagles (4-2, 2-2 Southern Conference).

Johnathan Bryant (Cairo) scored on a 3-yard run to give Georgia Southern a 20-7 lead with 11:02 left in the third quarter, but The Citadel (2-5, 2-3) scored 14 fourth-quarter points to take the lead.

Ellison also was 7-of-10 for 138 yards.

Mercer 35, Valparaiso 21

John Russ ran for two touchdowns and threw for two, including a 93-yard pass to Josh Jones, to lead the Bears past visiting Valparaiso (1-5, 1-2 Pioneer Football League).

Russ (Mill Creek) was 9-of-17 for 197 yards and rushed for 100 yards on 18 carries as Mercer (5-1, 2-1) had 478 yards of total offense.

Payton Usher (Northgate) led the Bears with 109 yards on 19 carries and Jones (Thomson) finished with the 93-yard catch, Mercer’s longest play of the season.

Tuskegee 54, Morehouse 10

Hoderick Lowe, who played at Grady, ran for three touchdowns and caught a TD pass to lead Tuskegee past Morehouse in the 78th Tuskegee-Morehouse Classic in Columbus.

Lowe, who rushed nine times for 75 yards and caught three passes for 93 yards, scored three times in the first half as the Golden Tigers (5-1, 3-0 SIAC) took a 33-3 halftime lead.

Tuskegee outgained Morehouse 598-278.

Shelton Hamilton led the Maroon Tigers (2-4, 0-2) with 59 yards rushing on 18 carries and Jordan Tarver (Stephenson) threw a 22-yard TD pass to Don Cox (Lakeside-Atlanta).

Clark Atlanta 56, College of Faith 0

Jordan Dooley (Duluth) rushed for 156 yards as host Clark Atlanta rolled up 591 yards on the ground.

The Panthers (2-3) didn’t attempt a pass for the second consecutive win.

Antonio Ford rushed for 86 yards, Montavious Taylor (Carver-Atlanta) had 83 yards and two TDs, and Aaron Hayward added 66 yards. Shaquille Traylor also scored twice for the Panthers.

Florida A&M 27, Savannah State 14

Damien Fleming threw two touchdown passes as visiting Florida A&M defeated Savannah State.

Fleming threw scoring passes of 5 and 11 yards, and Devonte Terry Johnson returned a punt 63 yards for another score for the Rattlers (2-4, 1-1 MEAC).

Marquis Smith returned an interception 46 yards for a score and Antonio Bostick threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to DeQuan Daniels (Statesboro) for Savannah State (1-6, 0-3).
