Saban to interview at Texas? Not so quick

Nick Saban isn’t going to replace Texas coach Mack Brown.

At least not right now.

But a Sports Illustrated blogger assumed Saban would be interviewing to replace the embattled Brown as early as this week, thanks to a Twitter joke by the all-powerful Paul Finebaum.

Here’s what Finebaum tweeted Saturday.

SI put together a blog and posted it this morning. It has since been removed, but here’s a portion of it:

“Paul Finebaum of ESPN Radio tweeted Sunday that a source said Alabama head coach Nick Saban will visit with Texas officials, possibly this week.”

One of the problems is that Finebaum didn’t say anywhere in his tweet that Saban will be meeting with Texas officials. It said only that Saban will be in Texas “as early as this Friday,” which, of course, is when Alabama will fly to that state for its game at Texas A&M on Saturday.

It’s tough to find the funny in Finebaum’s tweet, and to joke about breaking news like that is poor judgment. But SI has enough writers and resources to double check and find alternative sources to breaking news and whether they merit stories.

Finebaum is too smart for many in his audience, but there is no excuse for an actual reporter being too stupid to get this tweet.

WHY. Saban is not 50 anymore. He’s at the Football Mecca of College ball. Has more money than he will ever need……………There is only 1 little thing that might spur him…..EGO. Could he do it. National Champion at yet another school? Yes he could. Big stage in Texas to share. In Bama, he is the stage.

There is a lot more to do in TX than in hillbillyville Bammer so UT may not be so stupid to pay a coach millions when the schools are broke and I also think UT requires the football players to be able to read before they are in the 3 year and that is not the case at Bammer.

How is that NOT Funny? Finebaum just pulled in a so called educated reporter, who without ANY Fact Checking ran with a story.

Does anyone know of any other reporters who have done the same? Of course we do, it just shows everyone that every job in the country has hacks who do not do their job very well.

I think it’s a funny AND accurate tweet. Just because the writer of this article got fooled does not make it “unfunny.” (OK, I admit: It took me about 5 minutes to get it, but when I did, I laughed at myself.)

Elstinko,

So you’re comparing the entire state of Texas to Tuscaloosa? Wow, dynamite argument, but between all of the illegals, desert, and drug wars on your borders I’d say you’re wrong. Here is a little more information that I’m sure you already knew, but just forgot to post when you claimed Texas requires so much of their athletes…

FOOTBALL GRADUATION RATES
Alabama 75 percent
Texas 58 percent

http://stanford.scout.com/2/1273612.htm

Yeah, a lot of CEO’s and biomedical engineers in that bunch with a whopping 58% graduation rate. Glad Texas holds their athletes to a higher standard, tool.

Finebaum can joke all he wants to, but look for Saban to take a serious look at USCw when that job comes open.

I’m willing to bet that being the highest paid HC in a place like Tuscalooser is not as nearly as desirable to your wife when you can get the same money in LA, and actually have nice places to spend your money at other than Wal-Mart.

Saban left LSU for Miami for the same reasons, this time he’ll leave Alabama for SoCal.

In fact the USCw & Texas jobs coming open at the same time will send shockwaves throughout all of CFB and cause some serious musical chairs among HCs.

Nick Saban isn’t leaving Alabama anytime soon, but when he does, it will still be Alabama. They’ll just get a new coach and go on about their business and the haters will continue to hate them and their new coach.

Gotta love the know it alls on a college football blog. Nick Saban isn’t going anywhere. Texas doesn’t have enough money, neither does Southern California. You want to know why? That’s because his daughter is a student at Alabama, and he’s about to become a grandfather. His son just started his career with a job in Tuscaloosa and his daughter in law and her family are in Tuscaloosa. Talk all you want about money and all the other garbage half of you spew, but in the end, his age and family will help him retire in Tuscaloosa. Not to mention he is worshiped by an entire fanbase, but also coveted by everyone else no matter what people want to admit.

After that, maybe he’ll go to William and Mary and turn them into a powerhouse, and eventually he’ll become president and then the Emperor of Japan and finally, the King of England. You nailed it, Paul.

The author finds no humor in this incident because it exposes the sorry state of sports journalism in this nation. This is the same sort of rumor-mongering faux “reporting” that led ESPN to publish unfounded accusations against their bad boy du jour, Johnny Football. Now they have egg on their faces because their “anonymous sources” had nothing to say to the NCAA when they came to investigate the unfounded rumor.

Meanwhile, Georgia fans are irate because Finebaum preemptively stomped all over their “Nick Saban is leaving Alabama” wet dream fantasies.

I can’t believe his Bammer worshippers are happy about even a joke about Saban’s leaving Bama. And…..SI running with the inference, without research, is embarrassing at best.

And another observation about Finebaum….. He is definitely meant for radio, because I can’t stop laughing every time I see the cartoonish little booger on TV. Honestly, to me, these days coaches egos are at an all time high. Why stay in one place and continue to dominate? He’s won 3 NC with 2 different teams in the best conference in college football. If he stays at Bama for 10 more years they will erect a statue twice as big as Bryant’s. Will he stay at Bama or will more money and a different challenge take him elsewhere?

I don’t think it’s a done deal that he stays there until he retires.

As an Alabama fan, Texas and their wealth was really the only thing that scared me. But as I think about it now…all those that say Saban could go to Texas (or uscw or anywhere else) to prove something, what exactly is there to prove at Texas? That he can win at what should be the easiest place in football to win? As far as I know, they compete for the same title as everyone else does. It s the same accomplishment. It isn’t like Texas is competing for a world or galactic title that Alabama isn’t.

Now at some point there could be an (extremely high) number that makes him think, but I doubt it would get that far. They’ll go after someone else.

@Swampdawg, why would Nick Saban leave Alabama to take a lateral HC job at Florida? Five reasons why Nick Saban will Not leave Bama to go to Florida ? 1) Alabama is a better job at a more storied program, period…. 2) Saban has a guaranteed salary of $5.3 million a year before incentives, plus Florida is notoriously cheap. Ask any assistant that’s ever worked there. Florida wouldn’t & couldn’t match that. 3) The man is 60 years old and he will retire a GOD in the State of Alabama and be mythogized for decades like Bear Bryant & Elvis. 4) Will Muschamp`s buyout would be over $12.48 million & Florida is cheap. Did I mention that already? & finally 5) Alabama is a better job, at a more storied program.
