Saban to interview at Texas? Not so quick

Nick Saban isn’t going to replace Texas coach Mack Brown.

At least not right now.

But a Sports Illustrated blogger assumed Saban would be interviewing to replace the embattled Brown as early as this week, thanks to a Twitter joke by the all-powerful Paul Finebaum.

Here’s what Finebaum tweeted Saturday.

SI put together a blog and posted it this morning. It has since been removed, but here’s a portion of it:

“Paul Finebaum of ESPN Radio tweeted Sunday that a source said Alabama head coach Nick Saban will visit with Texas officials, possibly this week.”

One of the problems is that Finebaum didn’t say anywhere in his tweet that Saban will be meeting with Texas officials. It said only that Saban will be in Texas “as early as this Friday,” which, of course, is when Alabama will fly to that state for its game at Texas A&M on Saturday.

It’s tough to find the funny in Finebaum’s tweet, and to joke about breaking news like that is poor judgment. But SI has enough writers and resources to double check and find alternative sources to breaking news and whether they merit stories.

If Gators finish season at 6-4 or 7-3 they will fire Mushchamp and go after Saban.

Guarantee that any of the major programs say that they’ll buy that ‘White Elephant’ that Saban’s got on Lake Burton or someplace, will, at least, get a shot at Saban…if he agrees.

“I’m a Georgia fans Deacon and I honnestly could not care less if Saban stayed at Alabama. It’s not like he cant lose. And its not like Alabama will replace him with Mike Shula. The guy could go down as the greatest college football coach of all time. And you know what Deacon? I’m ok with that”

Well sure, but you’re Rick James. ;-)

As for your fellow fans, Finebaum didn’t manage to stop them after all. Not only are they posting ad nauseum about Saban leaving Alabama, they’re now jumping on the OK State story to demand that Les Miles be removed at LSU.

@DeaconBlues

“Meanwhile, Georgia fans are irate because Finebaum preemptively stomped all over their “Nick Saban is leaving Alabama” wet dream fantasies”

As an Alabama fan, Texas and their wealth was really the only thing that scared me. But as I think about it now…all those that say Saban could go to Texas (or uscw or anywhere else) to prove something, what exactly is there to prove at Texas? That he can win at what should be the easiest place in football to win? As far as I know, they compete for the same title as everyone else does. It s the same accomplishment. It isn’t like Texas is competing for a world or galactic title that Alabama isn’t.

Now at some point there could be an (extremely high) number that makes him think, but I doubt it would get that far. They’ll go after someone else.

Honestly, to me, these days coaches egos are at an all time high. Why stay in one place and continue to dominate? He’s won 3 NC with 2 different teams in the best conference in college football. If he stays at Bama for 10 more years they will erect a statue twice as big as Bryant’s. Will he stay at Bama or will more money and a different challenge take him elsewhere?

I don’t think it’s a done deal that he stays there until he retires.

Man this opened a real can of worms. Doubt Saban will leave AL as long as he’s still winning NC’s. Brings up an interesting question. If he leaves AL (for wherever) who’s going to get all those 5 star recruits in the SE, or will they migrate to wherever Saban goes? Tx might go after Kirby Smart? Or So Cal will come calling.

Why wouldn’t Texas go after Mark Richt?

Just kidding… ;-)

Spurrier to retire… since he can’s win the SEC at S.C….. Saban will go to Texas or Southern Cal…
