He’s got the name. And many say he has the game.
But will Cameron Artis-Payne steal enough carries away from Tre Mason this year?
Artis-Payne was the top JUCO running back in the country last year, when he rushed for 2,048 yards, 25 TDs at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, Calif.
Hmmm. Another JUCO transfer by the name of Cam at Auburn? Coached by Gus Malzahn?
Anyway, Artis-Payne signed with Auburn, but that’s where Mason quietly rushed for 1,002 yards and eight TDs, a highlight of the Tigers’ dismal season.
Here’s what Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee said about his duo at AL.com:
“We feel really good about Tre and Cam. At this point, it wouldn’t matter to me which one is there.”
Do we need to start thinking up nicknames for this pair, like “Gurshall” last year at Georgia?
Like new QB Nick Marshall, nobody is sure how Artis-Payne will perform in the SEC, but by all indications, he could be joining the conference’s elite of Todd Gurley, T.J. Yeldon and Keith Marshall before too long.
New helmet for Bulldogs
No. Not those Bulldogs. I saw Mississippi State’s new headgear of choice for its opener and am wondering what everyone thinks. It reminds me a little of what Boise State has worn in the past or what Miss. State wore in its White Out game last year against Texas A&M.
