Now starter, Nick Marshall will find going tough in SEC

That didn’t take long.

There was a ton of speculation as to who would start at quarterback for Auburn this year.

Well, the wait is over.

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn tweeted late Saturday afternoon that former UGA cornerback Nick Marshall will start at QB for the Tigers. He beat out last year’s returning starters — Jonathan Wallace and Kiehl Frazier – and freshman Jeremy Johnson. Frazier had already been moved to defensive back.

I wrote last week about Marshall’s great skills, but he was recruited to play cornerback at UGA, where he played as a freshman in 2011.

He was booted out of UGA in 2012, transferred to Garden City (Kan.) CC, and promptly threw for 3,142 yards and 18 TDs and rushed for 1,095 and 19 more scores.

“He’s one unbelievable athlete,” UGA QB Aaron Murray said this summer. “(He can) throw a football farther than anyone I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Marshall also was picked off 20 times in his 10 games at Garden City, but must have shown something in his first few weeks running Malzahn’s offense.

Malzahn obviously is hoping Marshall will turn into another Cam Newton, who followed a similar path to Auburn as Marshall did.

But SEC defenses are a different breed with different speed.

Marshall will soon realize he’s not in Kansas anymore.

HUMM Got to be a first…. UGA will be going against two QB’s this season who were former UGA players, dropped from scholarship, and picked up by LSU and Auburn. Should be interesting homecoming!

I like how you say he is going to find out what the SEC defense is. Like he was not signed for DEFENSIVE back at Georgia which is an SEC team last time I checked. I am pretty sure he has a good idea what an SEC defense is. Marshall beat out some good football players. Auburn is a pretty successful program minus having former CGC trying to implement a different scheme with players recruited for a specific type of offense. I love how underrated we are this year because I KNOW Auburn football and I KNOW we will be good this year. As a Georgia fan why can’t you just be excited that your team is rated very well and you have a chance to win a national championship?

“Aaron Murray will end this year owning almost every school and SEC passing record.”

Yeah… He just played through two years of the easiest schedules in SEC history and he hardly ever saw the bench in any of those cupcake squashings. His stats against quality opponents are not nearly so impressive.

When you steal from your starting quarterback and team leader, you have to go.

Well, when you steal from a team mate, the starting the starting quarterback and leader of the team, you have to go.

“He’s one unbelievable thief,” UGA QB Aaron Murray said this summer. “(He can) steal more from a locker room than anyone I’ve ever seen in my life.”

“I THINK NICK MARSHALL CAN BEAT OUT MURRAY EASILY. NICK IS SPECIAL”

Aaron Murray will end this year owning almost every school and SEC passing record. Think of all the great QBs that came come through the league and then understand that Murray will own all of the records. Nick Marshall threw 20 INTs in 10 games at a Kansas community college. He couldn’t hold the clipboard for Aaron Murray.

THANK YOU! I’VE BEEN SAYING THAT FOR YEARS ABOUT UGA. QUITE FRANKLY, I THINK NICK MARSHALL CAN BEAT OUT MURRAY EASILY. NICK IS SPECIAL. HE SURELY CANT THROW MANY MORE INT’S AS MURRAY, AND AT INOPPORTUNE TIMES. AUBURN WILL BE AWESOME IF THEY HAVE THE RECEIVERS.

ARdawg, Auburn won a national championship, all yall do at Georgia is talk about almost beating Alabama, where even there you coaches choked it. You never stop to think all these people are coming through your system yet you are one of the few in the SEC that has not won a national championship, even when they hand you a schedule like you had last year. For every Newton or Marshall how many have there been who never saw the light of day because yall buried them in wrong positions or debt charts in Athens? Cincinnati has Charles playing fullback in the NFL.
