SEC coaches have a lot to say — anonymously

The folks at Athlon Sports, who have been publishing preseason magazines for what seems like as long as there’s been football, get coaches to open up about other teams. As long as they are anonymous.

They did it with the ACC earlier this week and have now published some comments about every SEC team.

As an example, here’s what one coach said about Arkansas:

“They are going to be terrible. What they are doing now, it’s the product of bad recruiting. They have a long way to go. That’s nothing against the new coach (Bret Bielema). But they are going to be terrible in Year 1.”

And LSU:

“(Quarterback) Zach Mettenberger, to me, is very average. It’s going to be really interesting because their offensive coordinator was the offensive line coach, so they had single receiver play-action and just loaded up on the ball.”

This is the kind of stuff we reporter-types would love to get on the record, but the best quotes almost always come when the recorder is off and the notebook is closed.

Read what the coaches say and come back here with your thoughts.

On Georgia Tech from the ACC issue……………..” Johnson cooks some good fish, but his homemade tartar sauce is awful…..Bout like their passing game.

Some from coaches toward UGA…”Absolutely the most talented SEC team to never win a championship what do they do with all that talent that makes NFL rosters – definitely the worst game day coaches based on talent on hand”. “Richt is a terrific guy…just an average coach”. “Hey if they don’t win it when Florida and Tennessee are way down, When will they?”

Zach Mettenberger averages out to average. That said, he’s either hot or cold, from what I’ve seen. When he’s hot, he’s nearly unstoppable, but he’s rarely hot.

Nice try Plato. That is a very interesting read, not sure what I think about the anonymous format, it’s too much like a blog!

If LSU doesn’t open up their offense they will be lucky to be third in the West. Clemson beat them ONLY because they could not throw the ball when they had to. A QB has to execute but you can only do so much when the system puts limitations upon you. The play calling was very vanilla and the emphasis on the run was far too heavy. If they get some balance they can challenge. We’ll see.

Arkansas will have to get a couple of classes in to compete again. Again we’ll see if they can do it.

Now you’re delivering the college football goodies!
Nothing like college coaches acting like a bunch of catty women.

Plato, they’ve been winning the East….as for national championship, takes a bit of luck…not simply fl and tn being down. BTW, wasn’t FL 11-2 last year? And didn’t GA beat them? Thought so.
I guess finishing 2,3,4, and 5 in nation (which Richt has done at UGA) is lousy coaching? Any of those years could have been #1 with a little luck.

BTW, for the gullible ones that didn’t read the athlons article, Plato made up those coaches comments from his feable, little, mind.

I would ignore the articles on that site. Their SEC prediction has Georgia at 7-1 in the SEC, which I can agree with, but 9-3 overall, which means they’d have to lose 2 OOC games. While losing to Clempson is entirely possible, that means they’d have another loss against North Texas, Appalacian State, or Ga Tech. While I love the Jackets (c/o’93), I don’t see us beating Georgia this year, and no way either of the other 2 teams do it.

Nothing shocking really.

Bielema is dealing with personnel held over from a different system. He wouldn’t have been hired on if he didn’t have to fix a mess.

Zach Mettenberger has had an NFL arm and statuesque mobility since high school. LSU much like Texas is having a devil of a time finding a QB that can play at the level they need.

Actually, Athlon hasn’t been around that long and some would note possibly some credibility issues. Anonymous coaches quotes, really? A new low even for Athlon

I disagree about Mettenberger….he was bad last year no doubt……UNTIL the last couple games and it was like it all clicked and he looked good. I guess the coach who said that played him earlier….I wish he didnt look good since my beloved Dawgs will be playing LSU….but truth is, he put it all together late last year….the coach who said that might regret it in 2013. Know what I mean?

It’s anonymous because it’s garbage……Arkansas will ruin some dreams on the WEST side and win 8 games for sure!

Go Dawgs!
