No bailout for the unemployed

UPDATE: Senate rejected extending H.R. 4213 yesterday, the bill will be revised and resubmitted.

Recently, Congress enjoyed a week off for Memorial Day while America’s unemployed worried about the future of their benefits. Amidst rumors of a recovering economy, 12.1 percent of Clayton county’s population are still unemployed, compared to Georgia at 10.9% according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

H.R. 4213 (American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act of 2010) will extend COBRA and the filing deadline for tiers 1-4 of unemployment benefits until November 30, 2010. Other provisions include restoring the flow of credit to small businesses, an extension of the current rate of Medicare payments to doctors, several targeted tax cuts and a recently added price per barrel tax to clean up the Gulf oil spill, among other things. Price tag is $127 billion, including $43 billion of new revenue being raised by closing tax loopholes affecting wealthy individuals and corporations. Tier 5 for the long-term unemployed isn’t even being considered in this bill.

Although there have been delays by politicians on both sides of the aisle, Representative John Linder (R-Georgia) has suggested that receiving extended unemployment benefits keep people from looking for work. While I don’t doubt some may be working the system, I’ll bet the majority are not.

“I hate that people assume I don’t want to work,” says resident and legal secretary Jaydah Cunningham. “I’ve hardly gotten interviews and when I do there are so many people applying for the same job, it’s hard out there and without the unemployment check, I don’t know how we’ll survive if I don’t find work soon.”

“Until sufficient jobs are created to give the long-term unemployed a decent chance of finding work, Congress must continue to extend the Recovery Act’s unemployment insurance and COBRA provisions (which are themselves efficient job creators), and should enact a new program of cash assistance for the long-term unemployed,” Dr. Lawrence Mishel of the Economic Policy Institute testified before the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support last week.

Should Congress approve H.R. 4213 to extend unemployment benefits?

Unemployment benefits should not extend past 2 years. There are jobs out there if one goes for a temp agency, 2 part-times or a lower paying job. It sucks, but enough is enough. Be responsible for yourselves – go back to school and/or upgrade your skill sets.

Yes, Congress is to blame, but so are we if we keep electing these same fat cats who ignore our rights while they vote themselves raises back into office. Sorry, but …

…David Scott must go
…Harry Reid must go
…Nancy Pelosi must go
…Hank Johnson must go
…Joe Liberman must go
…John Lewis -thank you for your service, but its time for you to retire…must go
…every lifer politician (10+ years in office) must go

THROW ALL THE BUMS OUT AND START OVER. VIVA REVOLUTION!

We face the likelihood of a permanently unemployed class: laid-off workers 50-to-62 years old. They are able to work but not likely to be hired. Too young for Social Security or Medicare, “overqualified” for entry-level jobs, more likely to have medical conditions that raise rates, employers fear they are cynical, angry, and do not present the “cutting edge” image of a vibrant company.

What’s to be done? Retrain them? The jobs that are supposedly hiring include truckers, hotel staff, teachers and nurses. Think about it.

We can’t extend unemployment benefits for 12 years. Even if they were subsidized at $15,000 to $20,000 a year what effect would that have on Social Security benefits? No answers here, but I’d like policy makers to think about it.

We can’t extend unemployment benefits 12 years! Retraining is a thought, but the jobs postings are for truckers, hotel staff, teachers and nurses. Are these real options? How many Walmart greeters and night watchmen does the country need?

I don’t have any answers, but I’d like policy-makers to acknowledge the problem and discuss it publically.

Sometimes Americans feel as though it’s fashionable to be angry. What are we really angry about? Back on Sep 11th ‘01 we witnessed a horrific attack on our homeland and we came together. The fall of 2008 our nation’s economy was headed off the cliff, and members of both parties took unpopular steps to rescue it. Now anger rules. What is all the anger about? Congress behaves the way it has always behaved. There really isn’t anything new about the way Congress behaves. The media has to focus on something so they pour into our living rooms a parade of individuals rallying here and rallying there; disparate groups screaming “We want our country back!” Whom do they want it back from? These people are upper middle age to seniors. This group is grumpy by nature and fears change more than any other group. They are getting all of the attention right now because it’s a midterm election year, and generally young people, working people and minorities don’t pay much attention to midterm elections so insanity, anger and blind rage are front and center. These are the same people who have time on their hands to listen to talk radio day in and day out. Talk radio has always been wrapped in an anger package. However, now we have both liberal and conservative talk radio! 2010 Terms will awesome!

“Two Unfunded Wars” created over half of the national debt. Republicans broke the world from 2000-2008. The Democrats need more than 18 months to fix it! I can believe how the “Right” think! You guy need to stop watching Fox News; you’re drunk on Hannity Beck Koolaid!

Old people saw it, CNN and MSNBC and urban talk radio ain’t doing you no favors either! I’d rather get the news than watch and listen to “folks” make it up as they go along! But some people like listening to 3 or 4 people sitting around discussing what should be your news today, and how you should feel about it! They know what’s best for you, Mr. Gibbs told them so.

to MyHistory The difference is Dr. King was trying to get equal opportunity for everyone – judging everyone on content of character. Obama does not care about character just taking from those who have worked for success in order to give to those who have not. In doing this he takes money out of the system which would mean jobs. Not the do nothing stimulus package garbage we all just swallowed. Whether you like it or not – redistribution of wealth is a socialist tenant.

John Linder and a majority of Republicans are the 5% of individuals who control the wealth in this country.
I pray that very soon someone that they care about on a personal level have the orporitunity to experience long ter unemployment. As I write this comment the USA is paying for schools and bribing the Taliban in Afganistan and Iraq.God teaches us to help the least among us.

John Linder and Republicans had better be careful. The most profound biblical principle in any religion is to help the least among us. Many of the long term unemployed are single women with kids whose child support if any probably don’t come on time. God will punish this nation severly. I implore citizens of good will to not let a few idiots with their God being money to let us as a country lose our humanity.
I will pray for God’s will to be done.I urge everyonr to follow that lead.

Pookie, I don’t know what country your family has been living in all these years. But My Family quit being slaves 150 years ago. And WE to Doctor Kings words to heart and made something of ourselves rather than let Government give us what we wanted. But YOU wouldn’t understand how that works would you? Yes I have been out of work recently. But that doesn’t mean I have given up. It just means that I am gong to have to set my standards a little lower for the moment. And that doesn’t mean I won’t keep looking once I get a job for something better. I do understand it will get worse before it gets better. And my family worked menial jobs during one depression and survived we can do it in another and survive this one too.

The people we were talking about are rich w/wealth and class not job welding people. People with jobs are not rich. Wealth is “Accumulated over time, life times, centuries! That something we didn’t have as a people; that fact! In fact we didn’t even get forty acres and mule! Most people with jobs are slaves– living only one or two paychecks from poverty. Come on “Making of a Man”. Extend your mind! Understand this man, “Class warfare” is why we are here in the economical situation! Have you noticed how the “Ruling Class” Cheney have disappeared!

My family worked for everything they had with the sweat off their brow and pain in their back. My Mother walked barefooted across the bad lands of Texas and New Mexico driving three head of cattle and watching her younger brothers. during the depression while my Grandmother drove the mule and wagon. Her father was a Farmer who had lost his job because of the dust bowl. So they headed west.and finally settled in Southern California.
My parents had 6 living kids. My Dad shoveled coal and cleaned asbestos lined furnaces in a power plant to keep food on the table. My Mother worked two jobs in the fifties when women just didn’t do that. They were not promised or given anything except if they did an honest days work they would get a honest days pay. The same went for my grandparents. When my grand parents and parents died ( all within 18 month of each other) they were considered “well off” (by Obama’s standards ‘wealthy”) But the Government took almost 50% of it in Death Taxes. If one person would have inherited that thy might have been considered well off. but spread through a large number of people there wasn’t much left. AND we had to pay more taxes on what we did receive. My spouse and I are not wealthy we have worked for every penny we have And I resent people who think that I owe them something. Taxing what little we do have. So excuse me if I don’t buy into your “my family didn’t get their promised 40 acres and a mule so I have an excuse to be a bitter, lazy person with my hand out.150 years later.” Well my family didn’t either. but by Heavens we always thought enough of ourselves to work towards something better. Even if we had to wash windows and scrub toilets to do so. While making sure our children went to school to get an education.. And we can do the same again. So No you DON’T get a break from me. Quit your whining and do something positive. As I see You can lay around letting the government take care of you, keeping you in poverty and dependant. OR you can roll up your sleeves and do what is necessary to keep body and soul alive working and having the satisfaction that you are not beholden to anybody by doing what needs to be done yourself. Will it be easy. No the the pride it is priceless. You see I have nobody telling ME “You are so dumb and worthless the the government has to take care of you.” I KNOW I am not that dumb or worthless. What about You Pookie? Have You learned that yet? Has your Kids?

These politicians act like they are giving unemployment recipients too much money to live on. We are living under the poverty level but yet they think that is too much. I just hope with their big power egos one day they will get a clue. God is still in control, and giants really do fall example BP. Humans need to be so careful about how they treat each other. How can you turn your backs on so many needy families in a crisis such as this? And cut off the only resource they have knowing the job market is terrible right now. Karma is very real whether one believe it or not. One thing is for sure we will get pass this point eventually. God will make a way.

I lost my job due to the economic slow down for the construction job that I had. I have submitted so many resumes I lost count with only 20 or so interviews to my name. It is so hard not to become discouraged, but at least I had unemployment to see me through, now I am at the end of my benefits still no job in sight, I have lost my job, my home, my belonging,my car, and now rent a room from someone who by the way is also on unemployment, now those benefits have run out for her so we will not be able to pay the rent, I haven’t purchase food over 25.00 in months. We need help America is the Greatest Country in the world, but right now my whole world is crashing down. I don’t understand why our governing officials can take such a cavalier attitude with American’s I want a job I need a job I have work over 30 years of my life, and now I am on the verge of complete ruins. I pray that the hearts of those individuals who would not pass the unemployment bill never have to worry about their next meal, or how they are going to pay bills or if their children will have food to eat. This is not where I or anyone in this position choose to be, but it is where we are. WE NEED YOUR HELP NOT YOUR JUDGEMENT.

To All,

I don’t think that “POOKIE” is a black person at all. Probably someone of another race pushing buttons to see what happens. Don’t talk to the crazy people, but always keep an eye on them. LOL

I fell really bad about everyone who has been caused harm because of the economic down turn of this nation and the world in general. Keep faith in GOD, get ready to roll up your shirt sleeves and work harder for smaller pay, get rid of the idea that you are suppose to have anything, we aren’t.

Times are going to get harder before they get better. Time for all of us to slow down and down size not only our life styles, but our thought patterns as well. From the rich to the poor, things will never be the same.

The extension on jobless benefits – $50 million- Dems did not have the votes and did not bring it to a vote. They blame the Republicans. All the Republicans wanted ws to pay for it and that would be easy – DEMs could take some monies fron the stimulus plan – only bout half of that has been given out – that total was over 800 billion. Whats the matter DEMs – don’t wanna upset the Obama stimulus(Democrat payoff) applecart.
