Will Senate Bill 84 make a difference?

Recently, Governor Sonny Perdue signed Senate Bill 84 into law, initiating school board reform which will allow the state to step in when a local school system’s accreditation is threatened.

So, how does it feel to have lived through a small piece of history that has completely changed the way the system works? I’m glad this is in place for future school systems, it’s just too bad that Clayton County Public Schools was the template used to get it passed.

Nevertheless, CCPS is still working hard to erase the past and move forward, and the system is getting there slowly but surely.

During the SACS Review Team’s April visit CCPS fell short on four mandates, which included: “Committing to an ethics policy governing the actions of school board members; implementing a comprehensive, strategic planning process at the school, and district, levels; conducting a review of the school system’s organizational structure, and establishing an articulated action plan for dealing with the resolution of conflicts involving staff members and school board members,” as per the Clayton News-Daily. Tonight Superintendent Edmond Heatley will report on that visit, and results are expected to be positive.

Additionally, four public hearings will be held today at the CCPS Administrative Complex (1058 Fifth Avenue, Jonesboro), to discuss teacher salaries (10:30 AM and 5:00 PM) and the 2011 budget (11:30 AM and 6:00 PM), with the monthly board meeting to also be held at 6:00 PM.  Public comments are welcomed at all of these meetings.

Will SB 84 help public school systems in the future?

Duped – not a good argument. The last 2 BOEs that were in trouble were all Democrats and 90% black. Half were Trotter people, and with all that commonality – they still could not get along. Why – because they were only thinking of and out for themselves, not the students.

BusyBod – Why shouldn’t Edmunson try to find more dirt on Lee Scott, it was Lee that photo-shopped a picture to show Edmunson in a 4th of July parade in Jonesboro with a FAKE rebel flag in the background. You gotta fight fire with fire – and now he has two Scotts to go against. Go Michael!! Even tho – the Scotts left plenty of dirt an themselves the past 6 years, all you gotta do is pay attention.

Beside – if you really want to find a bit out about Lee Scott, find out why he left the N.E. US (legal issues?) to come to Clayton – which he said was the most racist place on earth. Lee has been known to threaten with the use of a gun – those people who dare stand up to him. Lee has to be taught – that mob style tactics may work where he came from up north – but that don’t wash down here.

Sorry BnB half the last board was not Trotter people. The majority voting block during the entire SACS controversy was comprised of members of GAE.

The land deal that costs taxpayers millions; passed by a majority GAE board.

The disaster that was Barbara Pulliam; brought in by a majority GAE board.

The board members who brought SACS into the mess in the first place were Ericka Davis and Rod Johnson, both GAE members.

But thank God no one from MACE is on the new and improved board, because with their great leadership Clayton County schools are the envy of the nation!

Do NOT under any circumstances, allow any SCOTT to be elected to the county commission! They will make you regret that mistake every day they have to play with the county government and every time the media reminds you that you flushed your votes down the tubes! THINK before you vote, REMEMBER before you vote!

@19&41 – Don’t forget about Valencia Seay, Darryl Jordan, Roberta Abdul-Salaam, and Victor Hill! They all are part of the reason why Clayton County has suffered over the last 8-10 years. Seay had been re-elected four times and the county continues to get worse every year. People need to remember that Seay is Hill’s long-time mentor and practically handed him her State House Seat in 2002. What if she hands him her State Senate seat and he returns to power over Fayette and Clayton county?

My Senate vote goes to the candidate from Fayetteville, Travis Spruill. He is a military veteran, has business expertise, and did I mention he is not from Clayton County!!!!

WHY cc…WHY? No! cc resident North Dekalb is lily white and affluent. It amazing how these folks at SASC are holding Clayton’s accreditation for nothing. Very poor black leadership in Clayton. Sellouts!

Thanks new school board

I’m glad the majority of the board is made up of non MACE members. There leadership now that MACE is gone has been astounding.

This new board, since it has the votes to not let MACE members influence it, has quickly made Clayton County schools a world class school system that is the envy of the nation. Their choice of Heatley has been so inspired. One only hopes, that in the current economic client, the board has the courage to make Heatley the nation’s first million dollar a year superintendent, to make sure he retires in Clayton. Heatley is that good.

It also would be appropriate to increase the board chair and co-chair’s salaries to $100,000 a year, so that they are encouraged to stay. No doubt top notch talent like the chair and co-chair are actively being recruited by educational organizations all across the country, and possibly even the Obama administration. They are that good.

In fact Heatley and this new board are so good, and so inspiring, that it is reportedly a common occurrence that when visitors walk into a Clayton County school, they mistakenly think they are in a prestigious private school, and not just a regular public school.

It took a few months, but now we see the proof. Once MACE was gone, Clayton County schools became not only the best schools in Georgia, but quite possible the best schools in the nation.

Somebody on the forum actually had the gall to defend Lee Scott and his nitwit wife?!? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! That made my day..!I don’t know he could even write that without falling over the computer terminal laughing….Thanks very much for give me a side splitting moment…

On the other hand, if you are actually serious, we got some major problems in this county (Well, we all already know that…). I pray you were joking as nobody needs to dig dirt on the Scotts…They create their own Hall of Shame daily…

Sorry that you do not know your history – but on the first BOE that got us in trouble with SACS – 6 of the 9 were Trotter people – mpst as members of MACE. the second BOE group had 4 Trotter sympathisers and Noreese was the CEO of MACE – under Trotter’s thumb. Wow – how mis-informed can you be.

quit being silly – the BOE is not outstanding – but they are doing a hell of a lot better than the 2 previous Trotter influenced BOEs. Keep MACE out . .
We still have 3 people on the board that SACS eluded to in their report, tho not by name. King – the only reason he is there is to try to save face over his ethics violation, Goree just likes to hear herself talk, and Garrett doesn’t come to meetings and when she does – cannot keep up.

Keep on blaming MACE for the problems; glad the new world class school system is working out so well for you.

And if Marky Mark is so sure Dr. Trotter and MACE is the problem, why won’t he mention them by name? Dr. Trotter sure doesn’t have any problem mentioning Marky Mark by name or meeting him any time or any place for a formal debate.

But if you think it’s ok that an unelected and unaccountable to voters head of a private organization can destroy property values with the stroke of a pen, keep on arguing for the Clayton County schools that you are currently getting-world class, first class, and head of the class, the envy of the nation.

Glad it’s working out for you.

I got news for y’all. The reason SACS and Elgart messed w/ Clayco is b/c Elgart and the two Guvner’s Liaisons from the State Board felt disrespected by the previous board, so it was the perfect time to exact their pound of flesh from the old board, get their revenge, make an example of the Clayco Board, push their agenda, try to make a whole lotta $$$ for AdvancED (parent co. of SACS) by tripling their membership across country. Clayco folks don’t pay no attention, look at how many voted even after accreditation was lost! But DeKalb – bigger, stronger, wealthier – don’t mess with them.

I got more news for you – this board is worse behind the scenes than the old one. They may have acted more like clowns in public for show, but this board – they do it behind the scenes – except for maybe Gorree. Don’t be fooled – this board ain’t no betta!

BusyBod – anyone has the right to attend court proceedings. Surprised you would want to complain about someone’s civil rights and their exercising of those rights. Apparently the local and metro news outlets are not doing their jobs on vetting our public officials ongoing issues. Are you listening – AJC and News-Daily. The citizens who are deciding on their votes should know the character of those running or office. Since Clayton has a large transient contingent – they do not know the history behind Lee Scott and his puppet wife Jewel Scott. Besides if you were are court – can you tell me why Lee was in a wheelchair, out for sympathy from the court , I guess. Is it true that the campaign pictures of Lee are from when he was half the age and half the weight that he is now. Come on Lee, man up for once and be honest and truthful with these “dumb, poor, black” southerners you so revile and have repeatedly spoken of.

The Scotts are at it again – first only having campaign signs with no first name on them – to save LEE money of course, them placing them illegally throughout the county, along with moving/removing their opponents signs.

Goree has admitted making a mistake in this instance, she has also said she would not fight censure. I believe her and feel this was an honest mistake that just crossed the line. She understands and the BOE has learned from this experience. Let’s move forward. And Goree is not a Mace supporter.

@Meet the Boss: Our problem is that citizens, school employees nor the board itself understands the functions of a school board. The board has primarily 3 functions: Hire/evaluate a Superintendent, Set Policy, and maintain the budget. THAT IS IT!!!!!! For all you who want them to take care of discipline in the classroom, set an administrator straight, hire a friend or family member, you are encouraging the board members to intefere in the day to day operations of the school system.

Again, the three functions are HIRE/EVALUATE a superintendent, set board policy and maintain the budget. Anything else, the citizens should ask for resignations- starting with GOREE!!!!!
