Chairman takes reins over CCPD

Recently our Board of Commissioners voted that Chairman Eldrin Bell should manage the Clayton County Police Department, causing it to be the only one that will not report to county Chief of Staff Alex Cohilas.

As per the Clayton News-Daily, this resolution “. . . gives the chairman the ability to make all decisions concerning operation and management of the police department, as well as the unilateral ability to hire and fire the police chief”.

Although this move was opposed by Bell (as well as Commissioner Michael Edmondson), it kind of makes sense since the CCPD could take advantage of the Chairman’s experience (as Atlanta’s police commissioner) supposedly without usurping Chief Jeff Turner’s authority. Perhaps some issues could get resolved faster by dealing directly with Bell instead of waiting to be brought before the full BOC.

But aside from his claim that this move violates state law, Bell doesn’t believe he has the resources to manage the CCPD properly anyway. And what doesn’t make sense is after finally getting the Chief of Staff position in place, why change the guard now? Despite all of that, residents who support Chief Turner are concerned that this is a subtle way to begin the process of ousting him. Stay tuned.

Letting Chairman Bell manage the Clayton County Police Dept. is ...

In addition, the CCPD is trying to get accredited by CALEA, and could use some public support. Residents can offer comments to the assessment team during a public information session happening at 5:30 p.m. today at CCP headquarters (7911 N. McDonough Street, Jonesboro) and/or via telephone (770-477-3918) between 1 PM and 3 PM.

Finally, our BOC will meet with the Clayton County Legislative Delegation in a Roundtable session tonight at 6  p.m. in Room 101 of the Clayton State University Center for Continuing Education (2000 Clayton State Boulevard, Morrow) to discuss county priority items to be presented in the 2010 Georgia General Assembly.  Citizens are encouraged to attend.

Everybody knows Eldrin doesn’t like Turner and never has. Turner should start looking for a new gig, he’s toast.

Jeff turner is doing a good job. I have heard this is to take Cohilas out of the loop. Which is probably a good move. Bell does not need more resources to do this. Just let thechief do his job. He does not need micromanaging.

Turner has a very bad attitude about the law abiding citizens in this county. You need to ask Turner why he posted armed policemen on the C-Tran Buses in the wake of the Governor signing HB 89 into law. Turner is just like his pal Victor Hill, when it comes to the citizens in this county.

I think that Turner is doing a good job, with what he has to work with. As for this deal with Bell. It smells to high heaven. I think it is a way to get rid of both Bell and Turner. But will end up in more lawsuits that will cast we the taxpayers more.
As for Double Actions heat toward Turner I have no idea what that is all about for sure but I have my own private thoughts on that. I just know for certain that Turners name is just one of a few that can turn Double Action in to a stark, raving, foaming at the mouth, lunatic.

Nemesis; (Nospin) You would by keeping up in the state laws in this county, instead of relying on hearsay. I take offense of people treading on my lawful rights in this county. It may not upset you, that’s probably the reason you cry all time, about doing nothing to safe guard your rights.Turner is a paid servant of this county, nothing more and nothing less; and I don’t remember him being on my voting ballot.

You might call me names, but who the coward ?

I hope Clayton residents are paying attention. This is either a smart move or an underhanded one of some sort. This is how the county gets trashed and homeowning taxpayers end up footing the bill fo runnecessary lawsuits by former employees/elected officials. Not sure what’s going on here, but it doesn’t sound right. Wake up Clayton county because if this comes back to bite us somebody needs to be fired/recalled/never elected again.

Chief Turner is doing a fantastic job with CCPD. He is always professional and has cleaned up Clayton County. Anyone would be blessed to have him as a leader. He has many supporters and nothing to worry about.

Condoning Dictatorships is not my idea of picking those who will voice their opinion about our State and Federal Laws, according to their interpretations. We should have the protection of people who are appointed to their positions, especially those with power to change the way our laws are administered.

This isn’t about Eldrin getting rid of Chief Turner. Eldrin voted against it. The two get along well. This is about Wole Ralph getting Chief Turner under his thumb. Wole Ralph(Wade Starr stand-in) thinks he is the next Commission Chairman and wants that say so over the CCPD.

Chief Turner is good for this county – and Lil Vic isn’t fit to shine Turner’s shoes.

Well if you never worked for Chief Turner then you would not have an idea on how good of a chief Clayton County has.Since Chief Turner took office, i noticed a great change in the police department. I dont know of many Chief’s that would sit down with you and hear you. Chief Turner comes to the roll call and want to know how his troops are feeling. Chief Turner is all about making the citizens of Clayton County happier and safe. Clayton County better be happy they have a chief that is hands on because if he leaves then im leaving!!!!
