We have ourselves a little Wednesday mystery! Why was Rosie Perez in a wheelchair and wearing a neck brace?
We don’t know much besides what you see in the photos included here. The actress was photographed on Tuesday, July 13 arriving in the East Room of the White House right before President Barack Obama spoke on HIV/AIDS.
She’s seen waving as she’s wheeled into the room and her bright smile is obviously intact.
We’re including the original AP photographer’s caption information with these pictures so that you can tease out any hidden meanings coded within, like in “The Da Vinci Code.”

While filming a scene for ‘SVU’, the script called for an extra to physically shake Rosie as part of a stunt. Immediately following the stunt, Perez tells us that she felt pain in her neck and wanted to stop, but did two more takes before she just couldn’t take it anymore. It was suggested to her that she might have simply pulled a muscle, but Rosie, a dancer by trade, knew better. Her injury ended up being a slipped disc and a bulging disc.
After an excruciating year long search for a solution other than surgery, Perez finally gave in. She was forced to endure a painful bone marrow procedure and then a neck surgery that has left the beautiful actress with large scars on her neck and hip.
Here is the amazing part – Perez, a longtime AIDS Activist, scheduled the surgery around a trip to the White House. When President Obama invited her and others to come to Washington to help formulate a national strategy to attack the disease, Perez was there. Unable to walk, with a brace around her neck causing limited mobility, Rosie and more than 200 other AIDS Activist met with the President. Perez and the Commander-in-Chief later had a comical exchange about her injury.
“Rosie, what the heck happened to you?” asked the President. After she explained that she was injured while performing a stunt, the president comically asked, “Don’t you know they have professionals for that?”
