Flood stories: Who are your heroes?
From the exburbs to the Downtown Connector, metro Atlantans coped with floods of historical proportions. It’s impossible to document all the heroes and Good Samaritans who helped those in need, but we want to try.
We want to hear your tales of heroes — neighbors and neighborhoods coming together, rescue units going above and beyond, even strangers who lent a hand where it was needed. Post your stories and simple thanks below.

Thank you to all the drivers who didn’t go nuts in the weather. I was afraid to get on our highways because people tend to drive status quo no matter the weather conditions. Yesterday everyone was careful, courteous and drove with caution. Even though the conditions were awful, the drive wasn’t as bad as a thought it would be.
YAY Atlanta! Can we keep it up?

I agree with MHicks. People were cautious and considerate during yesterday afternoon’s commute!! I hope we continue with this behavior. Be safe everyone!!

Thanks to some great neighbors, Rich and Diana Evans, who helped while our basement was flooded. These are wonderful neighbors who are always willing to help out others in the neighborhood. Once again, THANKS!!!

My family and I are rallying residents throughout the Dekalb / Rockdale county area to help support Dekalb County Commissioner Lee May and his family. Their home was severely damaged on Monday with flooding, causing May, his wife, and their two children, to be evacuated by the fire department.
We have created a special fundraising campaign for them and encouraging both friends and strangers to join us in this cause. Together we know that the waters WILL recede.

My heros are the teachers and staff at Austell Primary School and everyone else who helped take care of stranded students (not sure who all was involved, but from reports, it looks like Burger King and local police/fire and other local businesses/services). The kids (all kindergarten and first grade) were kept happy and safe. Kudos to you! I managed to get my son (who was having such a great time, he was sad to go), but it was a treacherous 4 hour trip to go just a mile down the road. It must have been very reassuring to parents who were not able to get there to know that there children were well cared for.

I heard that the Corp of engineers continued to release water from Lanier during all the rain and flooding. Does anyone know if this is true?

Yes, the Corps continued to release water from Lanier before, during, and after the floods. They said they do not have any provisions to completely turn off the water. Really? Wasn’t FLOOD CONTROL the main reason for building Lake Lanier in the first place? Of course! They definitely added to the flood waters.
