A new study has shown that texting while driving is much more dangerous than making a call while driving.

Absolutely not. If I have a phone, I want to use it for its primary function–to communicate voice-to-voice, not tippy-tap-tap to tippy-tap-tap. And if I’m driving, I use a bluetooth. People who text while driving should have their licenses revoked.

Let me get this straight, a group of people had to perform a “study” to figure all of this out? Why does common sense require a study?

Duh. It is the Darwin Theory at its best…. the dumb ones are weeded out of the herd…. just don’t take innocent victims with you.
Texting while driving has got to be as bad or worse than driving while under the influence of drugs and alcohol……… Oh, wait, lots of people texting ARE driving while drunk or stoned. They might as well text their LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT.
(1.) Your eyes are NOT on the road. (2.) Your brain is engaged in an entirely different activity which is NOT driving (3.) Your hands are NOT in control of the steering wheel because you are typing with your thumbs like a chimpanzee.
Don’t be an idiot.

Of course, I do. I am compelled to type meaningless messages on a crappy little keyboard, while I drive. Usually, I will tank up with a few beers, a line of meth, and some xanax to take the edge off, while I text my friends about what kind of boring existence I have. Boy, it sure sucks to be me. How about you?

I agree with KG…… Common Sense should not require an expensive “study”. Is this an example of where the so-called “stimulus” funds are going?
I am also against a lot of other activities that I’ve witnessed other drivers engaged in while swerving 70 MPH down the highway: reading, changing clothes, searching for something in the back seat, and beating someone in their passenger seat..
But, I don’t want to see our taxes wasted on studies to determine if such bad judgment is dangerous while driving.

With that said, there should be a study on age limits for drivers… If you have reached a certain age, you should not be allowed to drive!!!! Period!!!!!

I have a simple driving test……Put the person in a car, send them on the highway and if they drive with their mouth open and eyes half closed, they fail the driving test and NEVER get a license.

As long as the bluetooth doesn’t leave the car its a good thing that makes the roads safer. Wearing one anywhere outside of a car is grounds for expulsion. Mine is built into my car so kma.

No. Nor do I make phone calls, although I sometimes take one depending on the circumstances.
A woman I know got in a pretty bad car wreck while dialing her cell phone, which is not even quite as distracting as texting. She messed up her foot pretty bad, lost months and months of work and will never be completely back to normal with it. Plus, the person in the other car was injured, too.
The irony is, she thought she could do it. She said she always assumed she was able to do this, that it was other people who were incapable of dialing and driving at the same time.

Again, with the bragging. No one cares. You’ve made your point, and sadly it is an indictment of yourself and not hands free phone calls.

KG, while I COMPLETELY agree with you, common sense appears to not be so “common” as we believe that it is. However, it was a waste of money to conduct such a study like this, as it is something that we already know.
Since I use a BlackBerry, I can’t text and drive- the phone is too big. Moreover, I prefer to focus entirely on the road and ignore my phone as much as I possibly can. If something is really that important, that’s what shoulders can be used for- for pulling over and answering your call or texting someone.

Texting while driving may be bad but it all depends on who the person driving is. It would be about the same as someone trying to find a CD to listen to or even trying to find a radio station to listen to. You will have to take your eyes off the road. Some people can text and drive with no problem and would rarely take their eyes off the road and then there are some people that see an sign and can be distracted for a good bit of time. What the study tells you is how much time you are not looking at the road and how much could go on in that time. What it doesn’t tell you is the state of mind the person is in and how good a peripheral vision that person has. You have to know what is going on around you. If you want to listen to that statistic then most people shouldn’t drive within a mile of their home because that is where they will have most of their accidents. WOW….

I text while driving sometimes. No I don’t slow down traffic. I prefer to do it while stopped at a red light, though.
And most of the people that are opposed to text messages are probably older than 40. It’s ok though, just don’t force your preferences on other people.

to dixiewife44, in California it is illegal to text while driving. I believe it was a smart move for cali. More and more teen’s die each year because of texing about something pointless while driving. Studies show even more wreck or die because of the cell phones then D.W.I.
As for everyone else, thank you for this interesting read people complaining about nonsense is always a great read.
And just so you know. I do not dare touch my phone while driving. I refuse for anyone while driving me talk or text on there phones..and it’s not a stereotype for young adults to do it. I am twenty years old and have never touched my phone while driving but I guess some people are complete douchebags who like to endanger others lives.

R freedoms r going away kwik. Everytime someone gets hurt or killed or is slightly inconvenienced, crazed wimps cry to pass laws to ban whatever they were doing. C’mon ppl, use your gourds. Kids fall out of trees and break their arms from time to time. Gonna chop all the trees down next? Stay calm, be careful, and use some common sense. Some r able to text while driving, some r not. Some kids climb trees without falling, some fall. Stop robbing me of freedom and wasting my time. I knew a guy killed on a motorcycle. Do we ban motorcycles? Of course not. We all learn a lesson to be more careful and go on with our lives. Soon it will be illegal to go out of your house. You could get killed!
