The Rev. Al Green had Wednesday night church service at Chastain Park Amphitheater. And Sister Etta James dropped in to give her testimony.
It was a rare treat seeing these two greats on the same concert stage, and Green and James didn’t disappoint.
James started with the blues, mixed in bit of funk (Johnny “Guitar” Watson’s “I Want to Ta Ta You Baby”) and ended with a playful dig at Beyonce before belting out her classic “At Last.”
“Where’s Beyonce?” James asked with a sly smile. “I just need to whoop her a** one time.”
James sat during her set — at 71, she’s earned that right — belting out crowd favorite “I’d Rather Go Blind,” with an earthiness that pop singer Beyonce couldn’t credibly deliver in the movie “Cadillac Records.”
The movie may have introduced James to a new generation of fans — but the feisty blues singer owned her songs and the stage during her nearly hour-long set.
When she briefly lost her place and reintroduced a song she had already performed, a member of her band quickly stepped in. “When you get to be 71 years old you got to have people to help you,” she quipped. All was forgiven as James grinded out songs such as “Sugar on the Floor.”
Beyonce may have performed for President Obama, but Ms. Etta James let it be known that she can more than hold her own with the best of them.
Once James cleared the stage, Rev. Al Green served it up as as only he can. To the crowd’s delight, Green came out strutting and didn’t stop moving for the next 90 minutes. Concert-goers who had slowly trickled in during James’ performance couldn’t sit still as the 10-time Grammy winner with a megawatt smile worked his magic. Green opened with songs from his 2008 album “Lay It Down.” He didn’t tarry there long though; as fans made it clear they’d come for the classic Al Green experience. Green hit his trademark high notes while delivering favorites like “Love and Happiness” and “Tired of Being Alone.”
Only Green can go from “Amazing Grace” to “Nearer My God To Thee” to “Let’s Stay Together” without missing a beat. “Somebody say Yeah!” he screamed.
Green’s band and back up singers — including his two daughters — were first-rate, adding to the high energy show. In a nod to some of his favorite artists, Green performed a melody of songs from The Four Tops, The Temptations, Otis Redding and The Stylistics.
At times during the show, Green seemed to delight in letting his fans content sing his hits. At one point, early on in the show, he stretched out on the stage and pointed his feet to the sky, before jumping up quickly, shouting and singing all the while.
Oh yes, Rev. Al, you can get an Amen.

The show was GREAT! Etta James is a hysterical, dirty old lady and still knows how to entertain at 71! The Reverend hit his high notes without missing a beat. He footwork was pretty darn impressive, too!

Excellent show, electrifying, riveting vocals, notes from the 70’s hit without a miss, how can greatness not project greatness. I guess that’s what makes them GREAT, Roots what can you say about a band who members are some of the coolest cats around. The VERY Reverend Al Greene was incredibly, stupendously awesome! Etta on the other hand needs to ride her red scooter directly to the old folks home–do not pass GO, do not collect $200. Part of being a legend is knowing when you have no singing voice left.
