What are you favorite ‘Gone with the Wind’ moments?

Its hard to name  a film that shaped the views of southern culture and film more than “Gone With the Wind”.

The Civil War-era classic, which observes its 70th anniversary this year, was adapted from Margaret Mitchell’s book by the same name and starred Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh and Olivia de Havilland. It told the story – from a white perspective – of the Civil War and the years following.

Now, several major local public and private institutions are joining together to put on a weekend-long series of events meant to recognize and re-examine the fruits of Margaret Mitchell’s literary creation, according to AJC reporter Jill Vejnoska.

” ‘Gone With the Wind’ is the gift that just keeps on giving,” said Florida International University history professor Darden Pyron, author of “Southern Daughter: The Life of Margaret Mitchell.” “[Mitchell] would probably respond to it the way she did all the other stuff. By rolling her eyes heavenward and wondering why all of this is happening.”

The Atlanta Film Festival 365 is partnering with the Fox Theatre to showcase “Gone With the Wind” during its 10-day festival beginning April 16. Other events are planned including a panel discussion of the film and book.

Do you have a favorite character from the film? What’s your favorite scene?

“You need to be kissed, and often, and by someone who knows how”….I probably botched that phrase really good, but I love it when my Husband kids around with me and says that!!!!

“Forgive me for startling you with the impetuosity of my sentiments, my dear Scarlett, I mean, my dear Mrs. Kennedy. But it cannot have escaped your notice that for some time past the friendship I have felt for you has ripened into a deeper feeling. A feeling more beautiful, more pure, more sacred. Dare I name it? Can it be love?”

Scarlett: “Get up off your knees! I don’t like your common jokes!”

Rhett: “This is an honorable proposal of marriage made at what I consider a most opportune moment. I can’t go all my life waiting to catch you between husbands!”

Clark Gable on one knee…sigh…

Miss Pittypat: “Yankees! In Georgia!!”
Scarlett: “Marriage? Fun? Fun for men, you mean!”
Scarlett: “I can shoot straight — as long as I don’t have to shoot too far.”
Scarlett: “You, sir, are no gentleman!” Rhett: “And you are no lady!”
Scarlett: “Why does a girl have to act so silly to catch a husband?”
