Too alarmist about swine flu?

Are the media and government officials taking the proper response to swine flu or do you think they are overstating the threat and being alarmist?

Are phases like “raging health menace” — used by The Associated Press — and President Obama’s warning that some schools may have to close, over the top or on target?

What are you favorite ‘Gone with the Wind’ moments?

Its hard to name  a film that shaped the views of southern culture and film more than “Gone With the Wind”.

The Civil War-era classic, which observes its 70th anniversary this year, was adapted from Margaret Mitchell’s book by the same name and starred Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh and Olivia de Havilland. It told the story – from a white perspective – of the Civil War and the years following.

Now, several major local public and private institutions are joining together to put on a weekend-long series of events meant to recognize and re-examine the fruits of Margaret Mitchell’s literary creation, according to AJC reporter Jill Vejnoska.

” ‘Gone With the Wind’ is the gift that just keeps on giving,” said Florida International University history professor Darden Pyron, author of “Southern Daughter: The Life of Margaret Mitchell.” “[Mitchell] would probably respond to it the way she did all the other stuff. By rolling her eyes heavenward and wondering why all of …

It’s T-Day: Did you file early or are you asking for an extension?

It’s crunch time and Georgians have until midnight to file their income tax returns.

That deadline holds even if you can’t complete the filing. Consumers should file for an extension, which gives them a six-month reprieve.

An extension, however, does not give you extra time to pay any money owed. You still need to send what you estimate is due, along with your extension form, or face potential penalties and interest.

So far, about 10 million Americans have filed for extensions — an increase of 500,000 compared to last year,” according to an article in the Miami Herald.

At the same time, some cash-strapped consumers have filed early in order to get money to pay bills.

What about you? Were you an early filer or, are you asking for an extension?

Is the Burger King ad offensive?

Burger King is getting a lot of heat for a spicy new advertising campaign for its Texican burger.

Mexico is protesting what it says is a “whopper of an insult,” according to AP. An ad for the new product that has run in Europe shows a small wrestler dressed in a cape that looks like a Mexican flag. The short wrestler teams up with a tall, lanky American cowboy to illustrate the cross-border blend of flavors.

A narrator describes it as a “taste of Texas with a little spicy Mexican.”

You can see the print ad here .  Or find more on SkyNews.

It’s not the first time border sensibilities have been challenged. Remember Taco Bell’s controversial ad from the 1990s featuring a pint-sized talking Chihuahua that spoke with a Mexican accent?

What do you think? Is the Burger King ad offensive? Should it be pulled?

Sorry buddy, I wrecked your car…

A few years ago, some friends were returning to Kentucky after a short visit.

One friend was driving the other’s van as they headed up I-75. Less than an hour from my house, she apparently dozed off, the van cross the median and landed in a ditch on the southbound side. Thank God, no one was hurt, but the van was wrecked.

The parties reached an agreement on covering the repair costs. The friendship is still going strong today, but the incident could have wrecked more than the van. It could have destroyed a friendship.

I mention that story because I read a recent Associated Press article about an employee who accidently wrecked her boss’ expensive Ferrari. According to the article, the employee, who had permission to use the car, was uninjured, but the the boss was irate.

Have you have you been in a similar situation? Did destroying someone’s property destroy a friendship or family relationship? How did you handle it?

What do you think of F-22 decision?

The F-22 Raptor fighter jet, assembled in Cobb County by 2,000 workers, will not be an ongoing enterprise for Lockheed Martin Corp., the Pentagon said Monday.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the Defense Department would complete its contract for 183 of the fighters and add four more, bringing the total to 187, before stopping the purchases.

Was this a wise budget decision for the country? What will be the impact on Cobb County and metro Atlanta?
