Wells Fargo is getting a lot of interest on YouTube, but not because of its latest rates.
It appears Atlanta actors Emmanuel and Phillip Hudson, who have several hits on YouTube, managed to pull off a “Harlem Shake” video in a Wells Fargo bank lobby. The video, “Emmanuel & Phillip Hudson – Harlem Shake @ The Bank,” was posted in early March and has been seen by nearly 150,000 YouTube viewers so far.
It’s the kind of attention Wells Fargo isn’t used to, or maybe even wants.
A spokesman for the Hudsons’ management company, Archive Entertainment, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution the video involved about a dozen people and took about an hour to make shortly after the bank on Lenox Road in Buckhead closed on March 8.
Anwar Patterson said Emmanuel Hudson, who banks at the Wells Fargo branch, discussed the idea with a bank manager and both the manager and a district manager were “on board,” Patterson said.
A spokesman for the bank, however, would not say when or where the video was shot or how many “team members” were involved.
In a statement, the bank said, “”This was something that our team members participated in on their own time. It was not approved by the company and Wells Fargo did not produce the video.” The bank did not say whether there were repercussions for the employees.
Patterson said he didn’t know how many bank employees participated. “I don’t know who was a bank employee and who wasn’t,” he said. “They came ready. Everyone had their own costume.” He also said he was told everyone from the bank involved in the video was suspended.
The video begins with a man, identified as Emmanuel Hudson, in a black tank T-shirt and black pullover mask, dancing in front of a “customer” who is not paying the dancer any attention. “Tellers” are seen in the background servicing other customers, but they also ignore the dancer.
All of a sudden, the video switches to a lobby full of Harlem Shake dancers: Emmanuel Hudson in dreads sitting on the floor with a pacifier in his mouth and wearing a diaper; Phillip Hudson in a Colt 45 beer costume; a woman in military fatigues; two individuals in white masks; a man wearing a Santa cap; and others.
The name “Wells Fargo” never appears in the video. The only obvious giveaway is a quote on the wall in the background: “We have one very powerful business rule. It is concentrated in one word: courtesy,” spoken by businessman Henry Wells in 1864.
The “Harlem Shake” video was posted on YouTube the same day it was shot at the Buckhead bank. Patterson said the Hudsons’ next project is a YouTube video called “Church Folks,” which he said “drops before Easter.”
