Walmart slashes price on iPhone 5

Walmart has slashed the price on Apple’s newest iPhone, which some observers call a curious move so soon after the phone’s recent launch.

The retailer cut the price of the 16 GB iPhone 5  to $127 from $189 for a 33 percent discount. Purchasers must agree to a two-year contract with AT&T, Verizon or Sprint. The 16 GB iPhone 4S was reduced to $47 from $89.97 with a contract.

The offers are only available in stores, and not online. Other retailers are offering the iPhone at $50 discounts.

The competition to get smartphones, tablets and other digital devices into the hands of holiday shoppers is at a fever pitch among manufacturers, retailers and wireless carriers in the biggest shopping season of the year. AT&T has knocked $100 off all its tablets, including the iPad and new iPad Mini, until the end of the year with a two-year contract. The promotion, however, isn’t extended to smartphones.

The deep discount at Walmart, which also cut the price of the iPad, is somewhat surprising, according to a Los Angeles Times report. It suggested that either the retailer is subsidizing the phone itself to get more shoppers into its stores or its concerned that Apple’s smartphone and tablet sales will slow  after a Wall Street analyst this week said he expected 5 million fewer phones to be sold over the next three quarters than previously estimated.

UBS analyst Steven Milunovich expressed concerns that production will not be as strong as originally expected, iPhone 5 sales will not be as strong as the iPhone 4S in China and that the iPad Mini “may be cannibalizing the larger iPad.”

Apple has not commented on the speculation.

Would such a price reduction on an iPhone prompt you to give the smartphone a try and commit to a two-year contract?

I have also wondered why some articles have a comments section and some do not.

Awesome Tim – Not only “first!” but also gets in the mindless, idiotic “Who cares?” that so many brainless people think is creative.

Actually Dr. Oz, maybe you should give that Snickers to Tim.

To come on a blog and post ‘who cares’ is sad and pathetic. If the original poster didn’t ‘care’ then why would he be here in the first place anyway. He is the one that needs a little help,

Anyway, back on subject: My Droid X has pooped the bed and isn’t very useful anymore. Verizon will let me buy a Samsung III for $299 as a “deal” for re-upping. $139 sounds pretty good. As does $47 for an i4s. Verizon wants $99 for that one. Since I want two phones (one for my daughter) and AM going shopping for one tonight, I may look into the deal at Walmart. For me, it was fortuitous that I read this article right now.

Thanks Christopher Seward.

for most things walmart is awesome. Food, cleaning supplies, garden, cheap socks and belts, etc However if you are looking for anything that you want to be higher quality (even little things like a shirt or pillow) best go elsewhere as generally walmart only carries cheap versions.

Just because Virgin Mobile doesn’t sell the iPhone, does not mean that Kathy is not using one on Virgin’s network. Provided that the iPhone has the bands necessary to work on Virgin Mobile’s network (I’ll leave it up to you guys to check that out), it is very easy to purchase an unlocked iPhone at full price to use on that network.

I will stick with my samsung metropcs phone..I pay $50.00 per mth for unlimited 4G, text, talk and no contract! huh, get a 2yr.contract and you become their slave and if you’re very unhappy with the service pay a termination fee of $300.00 or more to cancel + monthly bill. Apple products are overrated and it’s falling behind the competition as far as value.

As long as my company keeps paying the bill, I really don’t care what I have, I was one of the few students at Tech that had a phone back in the day. Now, I do not even carry mine unless it is during working hours. I went to a concert the other night, and I really do not know how people could enjoy theirselves with all the camera phones snapping pics.

I have a Droid Razor, which is a bit clunky. I got it to follow baseball and football games, and it works well for that purpose. I switched from ATT to Verizon because ATT service was awful. The I Phone looks like a better device. Maybe I will check it out. WalMart does tend to sell out of items. You can check store availability on line. This blog is like Consumer Reports but probably useful and pretty good free advertising for WalMart.

The only reason that they are offering the “deals” is that the contract gig is about up. This is the last ditch effort to enslave another group of “customers” for an overpriced monthly bill.

Wait another year, get a better deal on the phone and pay less per month.
