Macy’s CEO standing by Trump despite petition

(Associated Press)

(Associated Press)

Macy’s CEO Terry Lundgren is sticking by billionaire Donald Trump and his apparel line despite an online petition to “dump Trump.”

The petition was started by Angelo Carusone of, a liberal website “Powered by” Carusone is trying to gather 650,000 signatures to persuade Macy’s to drop Trump’s merchandise and ads after the businessman’s repeated criticisms of President Barack Obama, culminating in an online tirade that called for a “revolution” after Obama was re-elected Nov. 6. So far, Carusone said, the petition drive has gathered more than 500,000 signatures.

Lundgren, however, told Carusone in a recent letter that while he appreciated the “clear and reasonable way” he’s expressed himself, Macy’s isn’t dumping Trump. Lundgren wrote, in part:

Please understand and appreciate that Macy’s marketing and merchandising offerings are not representative of any political position. Ours is a free society compromised of a wide range of viewpoints. Many of the individuals associated with products sold at Macy’s – or at any retailer, for that matter – express personal opinions that are not related to the merchandise we sell or to the philosophies of our company. That is the nature of a free society.

The CEO later thanked Carusone for “understanding our point of view.”

Trump’s criticism of Obama is no secret, from the president’s handling of the economy to the billionaire’s insistence that Obama produce his birth certificate – and college transcripts – to prove he’s a U.S. citizen. Trump has even offered to donate $5 million to a charity of Obama’s choosing if he reveals the documents, an offer that was ignored. Obama explained Trump to “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno by saying, “This all dates back to when we were growing up together in Kenya.”

After the election, Trump tweeted: “This election is a total sham and a travesty. We are not a democracy!”

In a statement to Bloomberg, Trump spokesman Michael Cohen said he “questioned the legitimacy and accuracy” of Carusone’s website “and the number of signatures claimed to have joined this petition.”

Carusone’s petition states: “Macy’s: Donald Trump does not reflect the “magic of Macy’s.” We urge you to sever ties with him. Macy’s says it has a strong obligation to be “socially responsible” and that “actions speak louder than words.” Indeed. It’s time to act.”

The fine print on the petition also states petitioners “agree to receive email messages from, Civic Action and Political Action.”

Macy’s may be in the business of selling products from a wide variety of people of differing political opinions, however, I cannot think of anyone who has done more to poison our cultural and civil environment than Donald Trump. I have no doubt at all that the root of Trump’s opinions are based in racism. On top of that he is clearly misogynistic and elitist. How’s that for appealing to women? He’s ugly on the inside and on the outside since his face is coming to reflect his toxic state of being. I will absolutely destroy my longheld Macy’s credit card if they continue to lend credibility and provide a venue for increasing his obscene level of wealth.

People need to understand that Macy’s is NOT an American company, they are owned and controlled by the Chinese. They simply don’t care about the opinions of Americans…..quite the contrary. If I were still living in NYC, I would simply never shop there again, both because every penny you spend there goes to China AND their association with Scrooge McTrump. Since I don’t, I’ll simply ask that New Yorkers think twice about ever shopping at Macys.

I’m sorry but shopping at Macy’s has nothing to do with whether you agree or disagree with Trump.

Who cares if someone agrees with someone’s views or not. I did not hear a single racist comment from Trump, but liberals always pull the race card. If you want stereotyping, most people who disagree with Trump probably are not spending their own money at Macy’s anyway! lol

Honestly, you bunch of losers need to get a life.

If you don’t have something to boycot or complain about, you’re simply not happy.

Macy’s also has deals with Sean Combs, who has five kids and never married any of the moms. Martha Stewart is a convicted felon. I disagree with both of these, but I won’t let it impact where I decide to shop.

Do like the website says: Move on.

Everyone wants to be an “opinion leader”….. Do this, do that, don’t shop here, be aware of that………..

Make up your own mind people…. No need to sign a petition, just don’t shop there if the affiliation offends you. Its really that simple. This implied power of large groups crap (and all these organizers/petition creators) is killing the intestinal fortitude of our country…

@ Carol Dijkhuyzen,

BHO Diesrespect’s himself & The American People every time he opens his mouth and lies to us about Benghazi, Libya where there are four dead Americans, first time in 30 plus years an American diplomat was killed on US Sovereign soil. He disrespects the office of the Presidency every time he goes on liberal biased media outlets like the view, Rolling Stone wragazine & Lettermen wherre they pander to his ass.

Are you kidding me, disrespects him, While you’re boycotting him from Monaco-been there done that while I was abroad in USAF in Europe why don’t you boycott coming back to this great USA (where at least Fox News and great Americans like Trump are keeping this guy from ruining this country any further with his lies, betrayal of Americans.

If you idiots had it your way America would be # 13, 14 in Superpower instead of where we belong since WWII, # 1.. Spare me your faux outrage, get a life…

Warmest Regards from the greatest country ever!

I often wonder was the world, including D. Trump in a coma and have no idea that America was financially sound prior to the presidency of Nixon. Was the economy in great shape on in deep, deep financial trouble when President Obama took the reigns of the country. SouthernGent your name says is all!

Ryan, first of all, you need to learn proper grammar instead of lying about racist S…. Second, I voted for President Obama, but I do not have and have never had an EBT card. I have worked the job of 3 people and have been paid little wages. But, since you know what an EBT card is, and you are aware that Macy’s does not accept them, you must have tried to use one there. You so called Christians amaze me…hypercrit!

The Libyan attack was a tragedy. But there have been numerous other tragedies in out history, but few have been so patently politicized as this one — way more so that the bombing of the Marine Barracks in Beirut where 235 marines and sailors were killed.

But that, of course, was during the administration of Ronald Reagan. And, what did President Reagan do — what action did he take after the bombing and deaths of these 235 marines and sailors? Can you say “nada” boys and girls!

Those who are bickering about “freedom of speech”, let’s revisit the document you claim to be defending:

The first amendment:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Where does congress come into play here? They don’t. So you dumb shmucks saying Trump should have “freedom of speech” are clearly missing the point (and probably missing the toilet when you pee as well, but that’s a different topic)

The point here is that everyone (even in a free society) is ACCOUNTABLE for what they say. That means the gov cannot stifle Trumps speech, but if a company that claims to be “socially responsible” does business with him in a significant way, must be held accountable if what he says is inflammatory. And this is not a “political point of view” Macy’s wouldn’t hire David Duke, or Osama Bin Laden (while he was alive) in their campaigns would they? If Macy’s feels Donalds behavior (note BEHAVIOR, not speech, or political view) is indicative of the type of company they are, then hey so be it, they are free to believe that!

But in the very same free society Mr Lundgren talks about, we are free to tell him to go F off, by not shopping for their blenders and mixers and crap.

First step, destroy your Macy’s card. Second step, inform Macy’s of the reason. Third step, do not buy any of Donald’s products. Fourth step, inform all of your friends to do the same.
As the sales of both parties decline they will get the message. Let your money support those that support America. It is okay to have a point of view, but Donald has gone too far.

@Maxie First, Macy is an American own company owned Federated Department stores out of Columbus Ohio. Second, to the guy who threaten to take all his money to Bloomingdale’s. Go ahead Federated owns them too. Third, why is it that Obama supporters yell race every time someone disagrees with him? Could it be that he hasn’t done anything worth defending, so you yell race?

One other thing… Macy’s did not say that they agree with Trump. I honestly do not think that one has anything to do with the other, but, respect those who decide not to patron Macy’s. And to all of the small-minded comments about Obama, get over it! He won! He will be in office for the next four years! How about using that energy for good and change that will help others instead of spewing hate and ignorance?

EBT cards are food stamps and can’t be used for shopping at Macy’s. I assume Ryan has one or family members who does. It is nothing wrong with EBT as they provide food for many families and children who can’t afford to buy food. Donald Trump on the other hand is a senior citizen who knows better, his disrespect for our country has gone too far! He needs to respect himself and have more dignity about his poor campaign loss for presidency. Oh course, he is a racist, he is upset and jealous of Obama, and he hates himself. I suggest continued silence Trump, enjoy your golden years and respect your country!

Another reason not to shop at Macy’s – their stuff sucks!!! You can get much better deals and better quality clothes at Kohls even. I have spent way too much money at Macy’s only to have them fall them turn out to be poorly constructed. Then I go to Kohls, spend half the money and they last for years. Crazy, but true…

Donald Trump is an egomaniac and Macy’s is now owned by a hedge fund. Donald Trump, as they say in his region, a REAL douche bag. That’s the problem with America at the moment, the worship of the fast/easy buck. Republicans espouse hard work and determination, yet let Mr. Trump be their mouth-piece ( along with trust fund Mitt). The Trump family , Donalds family, have their own fortune in real estate up and down the east coast. Where’s Donald’s birth certificate and college transcripts? Guess his family bought those too!

The liberals want the US to be a third world country so that they can have another class beneath them to lift them up. Regardless of how you may try to get all the lowest common denominators to vote (D), you will never have the power or the wealth you crave and are jealous of.

You gave your American Idol Obama another chance while the rest of the World is laughing their a$$ off at the sheepish liberals. Those other countries are more than happy to give us their poverty class to the US. It makes us weak.

P Diddy has done more to harm your culture than Donald Trump ever will. Liberal haters are just jealous of what they can never have or will never accomplish even if they try to steal it.

You liberal lunatics are your own worst enemies. Donald Trump is the least of your worries but you are too stupid to realize it.

There are dozens of reasons to dump Trump. His comments on Obama are just a few. Maybe Macy’s can sell Trump hair products. He plugs his show so much, and he’s gone bankrupt (talk about EBT cards – people who go bankrupt promise to pay someone and then stiff them – class) so many times, I wonder if his only cash flow is coming from his TV show and product endorsements.
