New iPad ‘mini’ expected Oct. 23

Apple is expected to unveil its new iPad mini on Oct. 23.

That’s the word from AllThingsD.com, which is reporting that the new tablet will feature a 7.85-inch liquid-crystal display, compared with the existing 9.7-inch iPad display. The smaller version is also expected to be thinner.

The new tablet, which will be unveiled at Apple’s Cupertino, Calif., headquarters, will be introduced days before Microsoft takes the wraps off its new Windows 8 software and Surface tablet on Oct. 26.

The iPad mini will compete with the Kindle Fire from Amazon and Google’s Nexus 7. There is also speculation that the new iPad device will be Wi-Fi-only.

The question is, will the “mini” be a major or mini hit? An August TechBargains.com survey of more than 1,330 people found that just 18 percent of respondents anticipated buying the smaller iPad, compared with 48 percent who had planned to purchase the new iPad before its release.

Are you ready to downsize your tablet?

I think people who type “First” should be denied the right to vote.

I think Apple is great, part of the American Wonder, the great amazing growth in goods and standard of living meant for all.

but, on a purely base and knee-jerk autonomic reaction, every time I hear the word, iPad, I think of the feminine products, can’t help it.

There was once a product called, Ayds, some sort of throat candy for if you were sick.
They tried for a few years to hang in there, but they couldn’t get over the homonym with Aids the disease.

I actually think it’s a good sign that we can have both mini-pads in the one store and ipads in the other and everyone groks it without a problem. It just gives me a small amusement, no problem, just amused.

I will get one for my children. Perfect foray for them into this platform without having to invest the kind of $$ involved with a full sized ipad. We have a Nook and it’s inferior all around for the 10-12 age range of my children. I want to manage thier apps and control the sync. I’ll be in line the moment these things go on sale… IF they’re under $399…

I have had 3 IPhones, currently a 64 gig 4s. I am waiting impatiently for the mini ipad. I do not want the heavier larger ipad. My iPhone has replaced my laptop for scheduling, email, online research, and information management. I read extensively on my iPhone and look forward to a lager but lighter, than now, Ipad. I will purchase one as soon as available.

Yes!!! I will be getting one. I currently have the original iPad and I have a 7in Android. The Android is ok but a smaller iPad would be awesome.

I’ll buy it! But it must have 4G. Wi Fi is just not enough. I need access whenever I want it!

Just bought my two boys a google nexus 7 each. Love it. I almost waited to see what Apple would do with the iPad mini, but from the last couple of years, signs point to it not being very innovative. It will have the same boring operating system, and there is no way they get to the $200-250 price point. It will be $300, and not worth it.

Also, I just upgraded from the original iPad to a galaxy note 10.1. Love it. Samsung is making some great stuff right now, and Android is innovating. Apple needs to step their game up.

Andrea, one for your kids and a small investment? I hate to break it to you, but the mini iPad inst going to come with a mini price. Expect it to cost about 90% the same as the larger version.

I thought that an IPad was a maxi pad specifically developed for me based on my flow. I found myself looking on the isle of the femine products looking for my pack of IPads.

OK . . . I am trying to hang on here. I now own all 3 iPads. While I can see an improvement in the Retina display, there is little else to discern differences between all 3.

Please ’splain the reason for a reduced screen size and a thinner iPad. To me, the larger the screen size, the more that can be viewed at a high resolution.

Ideas, anyone? Bueller? . . . . Bueller?

I love my iPad 2 (writing this on it) but held off on 3 because, we’ll, not too much difference. Android does nothing for me and neither does the expectation of a smaller screen. I was kind of hoping Steve Jobs left behind a list of innovations for the next 30 or 50 years and Apple would follow his plan… Guess that didn’t happen.

I have Kindle Fire. Love it. I am ready for the new Kindle HD. If the apple mini has all of the bells and whistles the new Kindle has, then I will buy it. I have iphone and would like to sync them.

I kinda step into IOS world with Ipad 3, im more of an android guy before. When i buy my ipad 3 i was in love with it retina display, and how small it’s application package size. Imagine same game on my xperia play was 3GB and here on ipad it’s only mere 900MB and it look better on retina display.

Definately will get this mini ipad to my son when it got out later in malaysia

It’s fine to add a product, but this is not revolutionary. And yes, the Note is SWEET! Everyone wants to look at my shiny toy. I bought the Samsung II Note, so naturally they came out with a III within a couple months. Making companies produce new models is one of my super powers. I can also make it rain by buying a new lawn mower. Fear me!!!

Still have heard NOTHING from Apple on having a October 23 presser. The invites that EVERY tech writer and blogger said that invites would come this week. Every image of this iPad mini has been renderings. China makes knock-offs and mock-ups weekly. At this point, we knew everything about the iPhone 5 so there were NO surprises. I have never seen Apple have 3 major announcements in 1 year. With the iPod Touch @ $299- 32gb $399- 64gb, this iPad Mini has to go for $449 and up to not undercut the sale of the iPod Touch 5th gen.

Correct me if I am wrong but Wi-Fi only means no GPS. It should be that the smaller the tablet, the more suitable to double as GPS in the car. A friend of mine bought a 64gb iPad 3 for $600 yet it is not GPS capable because it is not 3g. It is limiting. It would be nice if Apple and others drop the wi-fi only feature. It probably cost them $15 to add the 3G card in there.
