Apple Inc. unveiled its newest iPhone, called the iPhone 5, at a San Francisco product launch Wednesday kicked off by CEO Tim Cook.

AT&T said it will begin taking pre-orders for the new phone Friday. The prices are $199.99 for the 16GB model, $299.99 for the 32GB model and $399.99 for the 64GB model, along with one of a variety of shared and individual data plans.

Here are the highlights from Phil Schiller, head of Apple marketing,  based on updates from the product launch (click here for photos):

* 4G LTE capability: LTE has a single chip for voice and data, single radio chip, and can now switch antenna connections between different networks. The 4G LTE is available with AT&T, Verizon and Sprint in the U.S.

* Dual-core A6 chip delivers up to two times more power and up to seven times faster graphics, and Apple says it’ll help conserve battery life

* The iPhone 5 is 18 percent thinner than the 4S, and it’s 20 percent lighter than the 4S

* The new phone is taller to accommodate an extra line of apps

* New screen features 4-inch display. Retina Display 326 pixels per inch is same as old model.

* The camera takes pictures faster and works better in low light

* The iPhone 5 is made entirely out of glass and aluminum

* Apple is introducing a smaller, narrower connection port for the new phone.

* Updated software, more e-mail and Web pages in Safari

* Calendar showing more events

These are the highlights of the biggest improvements. Would the above features prompt you to ditch your existing iPhone for the latest model?

Speculation abounds about an iPhone 5 that offers the ability to connect to 4G LTE networks for the first time. With 4G LTE, which stands for “long term evolution,” connection speeds can be as fast as a home computer. Many new phones already come equipped with the ability to connect to 4G LTE networks.

The new smartphone also is expected to have a longer-lasting battery and an improved camera. In addition, many are expecting a 4-inch display, compared with the iPhone 4’s 3.5 inches, and a smaller dock connector.

Human – don’t be jealous, just go get you an iPhone. The only people who dislike them haven’t had one. It’s THE phone – all the others are knockoffs….

I already have a device that exceeds the iPhone……For several months now. Why did Apple wait this long to use the technology they \”already\” had?

Dont trust CNET as they have perpetual stiffies whenever Apple or iPhone are mentioned.

What does it matter “thinnest smartphone ever” if you have to put one of the large cases on it to keep it from breaking when its dropped.

@human…its call making money…pleasing share holders..

Same could be said about the car industry…or how about companies that make light bulbs..it is said that they can make light bulbs that do not burn out ever and is extremely energy efficient…why don’t we have those…b/c it would be expensive and would not be beneficial to the company.

At 7.6mm, it’s definitely NOT the world’s thinnest smart phone. The Razr is 7.1mm, and ZTE has a 6.2mm phone out there.

it’s exactly the same as the previous model. It is over a year behind with 4G as new phones will be connected to even faster networks. I just don’t honestly see the hype over this phone. The operating system looks EXACTLY the same as its first model. People complain about companies like blackberry but at least their phones work well, carriers will replace them without question (you gotta make an appointment at the apple store if you have a problem with an iphone), and new blackberries will use android apps.

Cool, they reannounced the iphone 4, and it’s thinner with slightly more battery life and speeds that are catching up to the competition. Still, it won’t be able to auto-fit the font of body of text so that it fits the screen for up-and-down only scrolling, rather than having to waste away your pathetic iphone loving lives scrolling left and right over and over again in order to read something this small.

Lame update so-called “5″. This should lose them some market share. If anything, the new “lightning” sized plug will lose them a couple of % in market share.

Apple lovers have yet another thing to waste their (or the government’s) money on.

Faster networks? Do you even know what you are talking about? A5 to A6..yeah the chip looks the same..haha..it has alot of features other phones have..and many features other phones don’t have…

oh PS samsung is still paying apple billions of dollars for stealing from them..

So, the iPhone is not a bad phone. It really isnt. But, its is SOOOOO overrated. Where is the innovation on this iPhone5? The specs are actually a bit depressing. I have owned all but the 4S model, have used the 4S model, but for my needs, android takes the cake. Both OS’s are different, and should not be compared. As far as functionality, my Jellybean android will run circles around iOS

Really?
