Vegetarian McDonald’s on the way

Maybe the new jingle will be “Two all-tofu patties, special sauce, lettuce , cheese, pickles, onions on an all-grain bun?”

McDonald’s is opening all-vegetarian restaurants in the land where the cow is sacred, India.

“It will be the first time we have opened a vegetarian restaurant,” Rajesh Kumar Maini, a McDonald’s spokesman in northern India, told media. “There is a big opportunity for vegetarian restaurants [in India] as many Indians are vegetarian.”

McDonald’s already serves a potato-based burger and chicken sandwich to reach Indian consumers who don’t eat beef or pork for religions reasons. Kitchens are divided into separate sections for cooking vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, but the new restaurants will be totally non-meat.

A spokesman wouldn’t speculate on whether vegetarian McDonald’s are destined for the U.S.

“McDonald’s listens to what our customers ask for and we certainly will continue to cater to local tastes and preferences,” spokeswoman Becca Hary said in a statement.

So, are you ready for a meatless Big Mac or Quarter Pounder with Cheese?

Beef is not sacred in India, it is cows!

” …in the land where beef is sacred, India.”

Actually it’s the holy cow…not the beef.

I can believe that your reporter who writes for living, it is not beef that is sacred it is cows that are sacred, do you understand the reasoning behind why the cows are sacred? they productive animal respected , because they can sustain so many in humanity, by giving milk she produces, it goes more in depth it is like mother to all humanity which in west or Carinistic Society)cannot comprehend. Only Animal in west respected that cause decay in west are the pets dog & cats but where China , Korea & Philippines they eat!!!

Well it is certainly a progressive move in a market that almost certainly guarantees some business. I think that they could at least add a veggie burger to their menu here in the US.

This is amazing!!! Go McDonald’s….I wish GA had something like this since I am a vegetarian.

I guess I am going to have to go to India to find something on the McDonald’s menu that I can and want to eat. I wish they’d try marketing some of these vegetarian items here. I haven’t eaten at a McD’s in over 20 years but might step in the door if they served something not completely disgusting.

Could you people please get past the cow/beef conundrum? Personally, I think a vegetarian Big Mac would rival the McRib!

Burger King offers a veggie patty version of it’s Whopper sandwich. I can’t comment on the texture or flavor because I’ve never had one. Usually burritos are the best quick veggie fast food option in this country.

If cows are so sacred in India, why do owners allow them to roam the street in major cities? I have been there and seen these poor animals eating garbage and hand bills stapled to walls. The things are starving for lack of any food they can eat. Doesnt sound so sacred to me. Garbage piled 4 feet high on roads for miles in Chennai. What a dump.

Chicken Wings but no Veggie Burger?

As a vegetarian, this certainly got my attention but I was disappointed that these are in India. I’ve been to McD’s in London and NYC where they have vegetarian sandwich options. Burger King has a veggie burger option so I don’t understand why McDonald’s doesn’t. Perhaps that would be a better option to “test market” here rather than Chicken Wings!

Meh…McD’s will find a way to pump ‘green slime’ instead of using REAL veggies, much like they ‘build’ their meat patties. Costs, people, COSTS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Support our ‘corporate people’!

Blech!!! Gimme a bloody rare or bleu steak about an inch and a half thick any day!!! GO MEAT!!!

If they built one of those here, I’d never see the inside, unless I had a potty emergency. To each their own.

It all stops being healthy if its made with GMO products, covered in pesticides, grown in a horrible manner, etc. Let’s not forget, this is still McDonalds we are talking about, not Life Cafe. A vegetarian alternative would certainly be nice hear as some have said. I would be concerned that the same grills used for the meat would be used for the vegetarian patties if done in the same restaurant in the states.

Sluggo: the Burger King veggie burger is quite good. I omit mayo and ketsup, add mustard and extra lettuce/tomato – with a small fries, a decent pick-up lunch.

I agree with the earlier posters, they should at least have a veggie burger on their U.S. menus. I am not vegetarian, but I do enjoy a good vegetarian now and then. I have one brother-in-law who is vegetarian and the other is totally vegan. It is hard to find somewhere to stop on road trips that will have something for everyone in our family….

I would want to know if it was a vegetarian chemical patty or an actual healthy type of food. I don’t trust McDonald’s to make it healthy. Just look at their disgusting “chicken” nuggets which are absolutely disgustingly processed.

Now…if this story was about Chick-fil-A offering a vegetarian sandwich, I’d be all over it. The chicken at Chick-fil-A is real, so I’d believe a veggie sandwhich would be too. McDonald’s on the other hand….uh…not so much. I bit into a McRib one time and I heard it say “oink”! Don’t trust Mickey D’s with an “authentic” veggie sandwhich, since nothing else on their menu is authentic!

I agree with Sam-A, and to answer Christoper, heck yeah I’m ready for this. BK has had it for years, even though they lose money or break even on it (depending on the specific restaurant).

They sell about 1 per restaurant per day, but they’re willing to not make a profit. That’s very commendable (and pretty tasty too). Couple that with the fact that I think BK is the first fast food chain to commit to all-cruelty-free animal products, and they’re kicking McDonald’s tail on this sustainable/vegetarian stuff.

In my mind, “Vegetarian McDonalds” is an oxymoron to the Nth degree!

I’m sure McDonald’s could find someway to screw up a veggie Big Mac. I think their biggest problem will be the produce used on whatever concoction they come up with. Wendy’s and CFA and BK all blow McD away when it comes to fresh toppings.

I wonder if McDonalds can figure out how to extract all of the flavor out of vegetables like they did with beef and chicken.

With the preservatives, fillers and additives in beef today I’m sure tofu can be made to taste very similar to beef. With the condiments and sauces on sandwiches, I’ll bet people wouldn’t even know which they were eating.
