Maybe the new jingle will be “Two all-tofu patties, special sauce, lettuce , cheese, pickles, onions on an all-grain bun?”
McDonald’s is opening all-vegetarian restaurants in the land where the cow is sacred, India.
“It will be the first time we have opened a vegetarian restaurant,” Rajesh Kumar Maini, a McDonald’s spokesman in northern India, told media. “There is a big opportunity for vegetarian restaurants [in India] as many Indians are vegetarian.”
McDonald’s already serves a potato-based burger and chicken sandwich to reach Indian consumers who don’t eat beef or pork for religions reasons. Kitchens are divided into separate sections for cooking vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, but the new restaurants will be totally non-meat.
A spokesman wouldn’t speculate on whether vegetarian McDonald’s are destined for the U.S.
“McDonald’s listens to what our customers ask for and we certainly will continue to cater to local tastes and preferences,” spokeswoman Becca Hary said in a statement.
