The name “Kraft Foods” has been around for decades, but the maker of all sorts of cereals, snacks and other well-known food products says it’s time to go in another direction, starting with a name change.
Pending shareholder approval, Kraft Foods will become Mondelez International. The company, which is splitting into two units (snack foods and grocery), said it chose “Mondelez” to reflect its goal to expand its snack food business globally. according to a MarketWatch report on the name change. The word means “delicious world.”
“For the new global snacks company, we wanted to find a new name that could serve as an umbrella for our iconic brands, reinforce the truly global nature of this business and build on our higher purpose – to ‘make today delicious’,” said Chief Executive Irene Rosenfeld, according to MarketWatch.
Of course, the company hasn’t said the name change will extend to products. Can you imagine a kid asking, “Mom, may I have some more Mondelez Macaroni & Cheese, please?”

They spend decades and billions of dollars establishing world-wide brand recognition and then because some pissant MBA comes up with a bright idea, they decide to re-brand with some foreign sounding name?
No one learned anything from “New Coke” I guess.
When this comes up for a share-holder vote, not only do I hope they vote it down, they should vote the idiot CEO out on his deluded ass for supporting it.

How dare these people attempt to change wholesome, correct American Kraft into some kind of foreigner sounding name. I’m not putting Mondelez Velveeta on my Freedom Fries ever again! From now on, I’m only using Queso cheese from Goya. Like the commercial says, Goya is muy delicioso.

“The word means ‘delicious world’.”
Oh, it does, huh? In what language? Neither Babelfish nor Google Translate recognize it in French Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Latin, Basque, Catalan. or Welsh (a little stretch, there.) I think this is like Exxon — it sounds condescending in all languages.

In what language does it mean that? Monde is world in French but delez means nothing in French so somebody paid a lot of money to make up a new language to go with its engineered ingredients and a ton of sodium. They can call it what they want, real food it is not.

This name sounds like someones last name. It’s hard to say and it does not roll off of your tongue. Everyone knows Kraft…why change? Instead of changing their name, why not come up with products that are less laden with “extras”. Change packaging or colors…not the name. BAD move for a largely good ole American product line.

Doesn’t this fly in the face of what you learn in Marketing 101 about managing your brand? If you have a recognized brand name and change it, customers will be confused. Once they can no longer find the brand they’ve purchased for years, they will try other brands in an attempt to find something with a similar taste. Once they’ve tasted other brands, some will start buying that brand. I don’t think this is a good idea.

In case you did not know, ‘Hispanic’ was given by former President Nixon to count population in US Census. Would you have fought in the Spanish American War or the Alamo???? Either way, it doesn’t matter as USA kicked butt!!!
Now as for the name change, the company is going global so there is not a lot we can do about that….if you look at the past few years, banks and companies are merging into one unification system. Read book of Revelations.

@Not White – I’m going to steer clear of the race baiting, thank you very much.
What I will say however, is that the comments of some of these posters is another sign of how myopic some people can be. We are in a global economy, and that requires us to think beyond our borders. Do people realize that virtually the same cars are sold throughout the world under different names to appeal to the audience in that country? Our that our beloved Coca-Cola sells sugar water all over the world under different brand names and flavors?
Why wouldn’t Kraft want to position itself to be a global player? In order to do so, they realized that the Kraft brand wouldn’t sell as well internationally.
We’ve done the same thing for US brands. Edy’s ice cream in the south and east is the same as Dryer’s (the parent company) in the west. Hellman’s mayonnaise is sold as Best Foods west of the Rockies… and so on.
The fact that anyone could make these marketing decisions a anti-Latino issue only shows their own stupidity.
… and with that – I’m off of my soapbox!

Retired Nabisco (Kraft) Employee
March 21st, 2012
6:28 pm
To correct some of the comments already posted, this new name is for the soon to be formed new International Snack Foods company, which will be comprised of the Nabisco, Planters and recently-acquired Cadbury brands, among others. The actual Kraft brands (i.e., for cheese, mayo, salad dressings and other grocery items) will still be under the Kraft corporate name, when the company splits in two at the end of 2012. In the opinion of this long-time Nabisco, then Kraft employee, it would make far more sense to I.D. the new snack foods company under the Nabisco banner, vs. some non-descript, European-concocted name that makes no sense to the average consumer and carries no brand recognition with it. A very stupid decision by someone, or some group of people, whom I would refer to as “Moron-delez’s”……..

Not too many years ago they changed their logo to be more modern. Sales plummeted and within months they changed it back. Guess they don’t learn fron their mistakes.

They need to take a looooooooooong, hard look at that name. “Global Goodies” makes more sense.

I just hope that jobs aren’t lost in this name change. Kraft has been shaky for years with poor
dividends to investors. Altria dumped Kraft years ago, but they too may be in trouble with
the heavy debt of John Middleton; which is suppose to transfer operations to Richmond,
which will cause job loses. Domestic cigarette sales are declining. Let’s hope that we can
keep Americans employed. America must protect jobs here and stop killing manufacturing jobs!

You can also look up your local grocery store or online website Printapons and find a list of the best deals, and the sites will match sale items with coupons.

I am reading these comments laughing out loud..amazed that (American) people are jumping to conclusions and are being so offensive and opinionated when they obviously only know half the story…Kraft Foods Global Inc is splitting into two companies – North America Grocery Brands Company and a Global Snacks and Confectionary Company. The North American Iconic Brands Company will RETAIN the Kraft Foods Name…its the New Global Snacks and Confectionary Company that has a new name – Mondelez International….for those of you who have never ventured outside of NA..please note that only Americans appreciate the Iconic Kraft Name..most of the Kraft Brands outside of NA are not even known as Kraft…Lu Biscuits, Toblerone, Nabisco, Cadbury etc… get your facts straight before you blow off steam on a topic you only know peices of…
