Filling your tank will lighten your pockets a bit more this week as gas prices in metro Atlanta continue to climb. Pump prices have risen 3.4 cents in the last week — to an average of $3.48 a gallon on Sunday.
Analysts point to three main reasons for the uptick: a shutdown of multiple refineries across the U.S.; the continuing economic turmoil in Europe, and Iran’s threat to close the Strait of Hormuz.
“Although oil prices remain near $100 a barrel, retail gas prices continue to rise at a steady pace,” said Jessica Brady, AAA spokeswoman. “Concerns of dwindling supplies from refinery shutdowns in the U.S., at a time when gas demand is starting to improve are driving pump prices higher.” She said consumers are likely to see gas prices increase again this week.
Prices Sunday were 51.5 cents per gallon higher than the same day a year ago and are 28.9 cents per gallon higher than a month ago, according to GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan.
“We continue to also watch how Iran responds to EU sanctions- there are some concerns that they may cut oil to the European region before the sanctions are to take effect to cause these countries hardship when they can’t find new sources of oil quickly enough. That in itself could draw crude oil prices higher quickly at a moments notice,” DeHaan said.
Meanwhile, lower than average prices have been spotted throughout metro Atlanta. GasBuddy.com reports regular unleaded gas for $3.34 at Home Depot, 3355 N. Cobb Pkwy near Acworth; $3.35 at an Ingles at 3701 Walt Stephens Rd & Speer Rd. in Stockbridge, and $3.35 at a Marathon at 326 Cherokee St & Timber Lake Rd in Kennesaw.

This is all a bunch of garbage. There are plenty of reserves worldwide with plenty of oil. They are using bs excuses to be able to cripple the pockets of people worldwide. I dont have respect for anyone involved. I told a friend to expect $4.25 gas by June. I dont think many of us can handle 5 dollars a gallon. That would cost an average of $70 to fill up!!!!!!! It’s getting critical out here….

Isn’t it more the embargo of Iran effecting global supply rather than any threats in the strait of Hormuz?

The current administration should take the brunt of the gas customer frustration. What was the price of gas when this administration started? $1.84/gal. So much for big business and government controlling them. Thank the “Gas Lobbyists” for keeping gas prices high. And thank this administration for nixing the pipeline from Canada to Texas…there go thousands of jobs…and we get most of our oil from Canada. So the Chinese stepping in to build a pipeline to the Pacific Coast so they can ship the oil. Golly ghee Mr.President…thanks…

PMC….just a quick history note the US has had an embargo against all business and/or trade with Iran since 1995. So lack of oil from Iran hasn’t been an issue for many years.
The rising price of oil has to do with many factors, just a few examples are:
-control of the supply flow by the countries with the largest supplies
-speculation in the investment market
-lack of refineries in the US
-inflation, making the value of the dollar less
-supply and demand from emerging economics as other countries grow and develop a greater need
-taxes, US national tax 18.4 cents/gallon, state of GA 7.5 cents/gallon, + 4% sales tax on top of that. If gas cost was $1.00/gallon in Georgia we would actually pay $1.309/ gallon.
A large factor is the Obama administrations view point that we need to use less fossil fuels. Regulations against exploration for oil, new wells, and construction of new refineries and pipelines are a huge factor. For example with Obama announced he would kill the Keystone XL pipeline gas prices shot up the next day, about $0.10 where I live. And when Canadian company said they would look to China for refining prices when up another $0.05 a few days later.

Yet, fuel was the leading export for US last year. Something does not jibe here.
They charge as much as they can get away with and wait until they feel a little heat from governement or public. Then bring prices down to a number higher than previous low. Wait a few months, then rinse and repeat.
Supply and demand, profit maximization and speculation. I really don’t know what you can do about it in a free market.

Hannity and all the other GOP blowhards screamed how Presidents can’t alter gas prices. And it’s OPEC for the much informed JD.
Get over it. Seems like all those drill baby drill CEOs would rather shut down refineries and make their money by just raising gas prices. Don’t see any of you down in Texas having it out with the people that are truly responsible for this.

How about an explanation on why refineries are being shut down? Please don’t use worries about future oil supplies as a reason, there are financial instruments for the oil companies to use to hedge against such problems.

Don’t understand gas prices at all. Not to far in the past, gas prices remain fairly constant not matter what the situation was in the world. Now it seems every time a tropical storm forms or some third world country rants about something the oil companies use it as an excuse to raise gas prices. Do the oil companies not own their own wells or do they just purchase the oil from others? It is fairly obvious that gasoline retailers depend on each other to set their retail prices. When one drops or raises their prices then the other does. Why do they have to call other retailers to “shop” prices before making a price change? In Dalton their are two Race Trac stores about 3 mile apart. They never have the same price. One changes it’s price to compete with Walmart and the other does the same to compete with Kroger. Get real guy, they found out several yrs ago that we would pay whatever they charged us and they will continue to raise prices.

It comes down to manipulation of the oil market at the consumer’s expense. Given the heavy impact of oil prices on most people, there should be trading regulations and restrictions to protect us from this market manipulation.
In the end, our government employees will continue to fill up their vehicles on our dime for business and personal driving. What price does gas need to reach per gallon before we see reform in this area?

They left off the fourth, and biggest, reason. We’re simply running out of oil. As the supply dwindles the demand (can you say China) surges. No complaint though, it’s been a great time to be an oil company shareholder and it’ll only get better.

Alot of people just love to over-simplify a situation and ignore a thorough analysis. This is mostly (not totally) due to the fact that the price of oil is set by speculators OR the companies that refine oil. Both parties profit wildly if the price of oil and/or gasoline goes up. This is not Obama’s fault, even if a few newer regualtions do not allow the oil companies to rape the environment, the outcome would be very similar.

These refinery closures don’t help, particularly since we aren’t opening any new refineries to replace the production capacity of the ones that are shutting down (or if we ARE opening new refineries, it is at a pace that will not help relieve pressure at the pump any time soon). This is what I see as the biggest contributor to higher prices here. We have plenty of oil, but we are actively reducing our domestic capacity to refine that oil into usable products, gasoline being the primary one. Thus, our domestic gas supply is getting smaller, increasing prices.

July 7, 2008
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi wrapped up her San Francisco holiday weekend Monday with a blast at President Bush. The topic — the price of oil. Gasoline has more than doubled since the Bush administration took office she says.
San Francisco’s Meals on Wheels turns out more than 1,300 meals a day to seniors. But now there has been a dramatic rise in expenses.
“Our costs have gone up 40 percent, but even more so, the indirect costs of driving food costs is really taking a big hit on us. Almost a nine percent increase in food costs in just one year,” says Ashley McCumber of Meals on Wheels.
McCumber joined Speaker Pelosi Monday to dramatize the tough times businesses are having because of fuel costs. The speaker blames what she labels the Bush-Cheney big oil agenda, using graphics to point out gasoline prices have more than doubled in the Bush administration.
“This is a scam of the greatest magnitude,” says Speaker Pelosi.
Rising gas prices affect groups like the Boys and Girls Club that is cutting programs to save costs, a small businessman who finds himself being priced out of competition or a caregiver who can’t afford gas to get to clients.
And for other Meals on Wheels programs around the bay, hikes in fuel costs have meant fewer deliveries. They can’t find volunteers who can afford to fill their tanks.
Prices at the pump are a pain for all of us, but Speaker Pelosi is accusing President Bush of policies that have driven up the prices, and says she has a solution to bring prices down immediately,

Why, if the costs of doing business are so burdensome, are oil company profits consistantly some of the higest around. They could maintain the price and still be enormously profitable, even under the current administration. It is not good enough. The oil companies have to extract as much profit as possible out of Americans. The only remedy is alternative fuels.

UGA 1999 – I don’t really see how the items you listed effect the refined product. We are already refining so much more than we need and are exporting record amounts. Thus we are importing large amounts of crude for the sole purpose of refining and exporting. Domestic oil production has remained fairly steady for the last 10 years. Increased domestic production would be a boon for oil companies and would create jobs, but I can’t see that it would have any significant effect on price.

Gas is at least $1.00 more per gallon than when Obama took office.
Arent we all supposed to ask this question:
Are you better or worse off today than you were 4 years ago?
DUH!
Gas was $1.87 per gallon the day Obama took office. Great question.

There is some kind of anomaly going on in the metro Atlanta area regarding current gas prices. I say this for two reasons and have NEVER seen this before. I heard announced the average nationwide gas prices announced last week. I don’t remember the exact amount but we were at least 5 cents a gallon over the national average. Always in the past we have been lower due to our lower state taxes. Also I drove to Chattanooga over the weekend. Many stations off of the interstate were advertising $3.29 owe gallon for regular and these were all still in GA. If anyone can give a reason for this disparity, I’d love to hear it as I have never witnessed it before.

BS Excuses are getting Old -

Bu77$hit! These excuses are a load of crap. It boils down to corporate oil greed and nothing else. When there is no threat to the straight we’ll not see a decrease, nor will we see one when the EU is more stable. What we will see is a continuous rise until we reach European prices as your illustrious Omaba stated at the beginning of his term! And he refuses to support an oil pipeline! Watch the tanks, gasoline rises until it hurts, and people scream then it drops a few pennies. After a short while, it rises again, a little higher until people scream again, then it drops. It has been a vicious circle since we had $1.00 gas and now we’re praying it won’t reach $4.00. Where are the salaries to compensate for this tremendous increase? In the CEO’s pockets, that’s where! What can we do, not a damn thing but buy it and gripe.

Here is a little info on why gas prices are increasing due to lack of production of crude oil to gasoline – The real problem, however, is not that there aren’t enough refineries (which, once again, there aren’t,) but that the refineries we have are not working at maximum capacity. Regularly, their parent companies will shut them down or scale them back, dramatically reducing their output. The oil companies say its due to refinery age, reparis, etc. There is much debate, however, as to whether or not these actions are actually deliberate in order to boost prices at the pump. It could be argued that with problems occurring that increase expenses for oil companies that their increase in profits recently makes those same statements of high expenditures false.

Chuck is the only one who has “hit the nail flush” on why GAS prices are going up. The price of oil has been hovering at $100 for some time. It’s the supply of gasoline fools. And even if President Obama OK’d more drilling when he came into office, that additional oil would not be available for 7 years!!!! And what guarentee would there be that the oil companies would keep that new oil just for the stupid Americans???
The real question is why are the refineries shutting down. Maintenance? Broken? manipulating the price of gas?
