T.O.: Broke, lonely, “in hell”

Atlanta-connected former famous footballer Terrell Owens is in the news again.

Of course, it’s not good news.

T.O.’s got money problems, among other troubles, according to a piece in GQ.

The once-electric wideout earned $80 million over a career marked by both accomplishment and controversy, but now, he says, he’s broke.

He’s also friendless and apparently despondent, living in an apartment in L.A.

Those money troubles, he says, stem from bad business decisions _ investments made at the suggestion of those presumed to be knowledgeable and operating in his best interests.

T.O. says he was never a big spender himself.

Now 38, he’s still aching for a comeback, on and off the field.

You reap what you sow. Maybe if he would have had once ounce of humility and been responsible for himself he would be in a better place. If you give control of your money over other people you have not excuse for being surprised when it is gone. Take responsibility for yourself.

As for him not having any friends, he said in the interview he didn’t want any.

Even at this stage in his life all his problems are other people fault. That has been and always will be his downfall. He is completely selfish and self absorbed and has no intention of actually being a responsible adult. If he didn’t want to pay all this child support he should have been responsible and not had four children with four different women.

Notice a theme in all his problems yet?

I dont feel bad for him. There is no reason under the sun that someone should go thru 80 million dollars like that. Even if you plan to invest some money, you still make sure you have something in the whole if that should go bad. You dont put all your eggs in one basket. Greed is the other reason he failed. 80 million isn’t enough? Really? You can’t spend all that money in your lifetime, not resonalbly. *shaking my head*

TO earned 80 million, but still claims to be a victim. His jewelry alone at one time was legendary. Don’t we all see that no matter how much money one has, that moral values and good conduct pay off? No amount of money ever makes up for the mindset where a “give-me-more” mentality exists. TO is in a fix because he’s acted like a prick. There’s no evidence that he’ll stop acting like a prick.

Where did he spend $80mill?

January 25th, 2012
10:15 am

I don’t wish anything negative on TO, but the fact that he has made over $80 million dollars and spent it does not sit well with me. I don’t feel sorry for him. That’s alot of money that he was blessed with. And I’m sorry, he may not believe that what he has been spending was excessive or lavish, but his bank account says otherwise. Oh well, hopefully he can find something off field to make a living like the rest of us! Good luck TO!

It’s funny to me how judgmental people are about “people and “things” they don’t know. Yes 80 million dollars is alot of money but to blackball an individual from a game and not allowing him to earn a living the way he has for years isn’t right. Remember these guys would not behave the way they do. if we as “fans” did not put so much stock in professional sports and all that comes with it. Just something to think about.

I haven’t read the GQ piece, but simply taking into account this brief AJC write-up, I would suggest that it’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility that Owens might very well attempt to “resolve” all these matters by killing himself. His is yet another testament to the reality of the ills and evils of this world and how, when we allow them to inculcate us in the wrong way, we reap the devastating consequences. Regardless of his faults, failures and poor decision-making, I will be in prayer for him.

Just think about this. If he had squirreled away $3.5 million, he would be bringing in $10,000 a month after taxes. That’s way more than most of us bring home and a small percentage of what he made in his career. Don’t forgot though, that even though he was paid $80,000,000 during his career, half of that went to taxes and his agent. But basically my point is that EVERYONE, no matter their income level, should invest (in an account they control) 10% of their income for the day there isn’t an income anymore.

If he worked in the NFL for 12 years or more he is a veteran. That makes him eligible for a really sizable pension from the NFLPA. At 12 years vested in the NFL, his pension will kick in well for him at 55 years of age. In the meantime, get a job!

They are all hanging out at the bar, talking with any woman that got close, and his ‘posse’ kept asking folks ‘do you know who this is’. He was an arrogant jerk, loud, obnoxious, and quite full of himself. Some guy was trying to get to the bar to order a drink, and he accidently bumped into him. TO jumps up and shoves the guy, screaming at him that he needs to be careful. Total roid rage.

Pray for Him DBH? Let me understand this. He lost his 80 million dollar fortune. When he was riding high did he even stop to help anyone that may could have used his help. I bet if you walked up to him when he had his 80million and asked for five dollars I can just imagine what his response was.
So we PRAY FOR HIM because he is now broke? Did you Pray for him when he was 80million dollars richer and partying? Oh no..he didnt Need your Prayers then. You wasnt Praying for him then. I didnt hear you come on when he was riding high saying I will PRay for TO then. HYPOCRITE!

Funny No one Prays for anyone when they sign million dollar contracts I dont hear any of you come on here saying I will PRAY for them. But when they hit hard times then you goonies come on here wanting a sympathy prayer. “I will Pray for so and so..” Oh GOOD GRIEF…Dont just pray for them when they fall pray for them when they are ON ToP. oh my bad. Don’t worry about T.O.,he’ll get another opportunity to do something. He’s not the first to blow all of his money, and to blame it on others. Just hope that he has learned a valuable life lesson.

Also, T.O. has not been black balled from playing in the NFL. He’s 38 and for a WR that’s ancient, not to mention he is coming off an ACL injury that takes time to recover from. Your asking a lot of any team to take a chance on you at this point. If he can show a change in his persona, then look for some team to give him a tryout. He’ll also be in the HOF one day, and he’ll probably get a book deal at some point. He needs to quit feeling sorry for himself, and to get his emotions in check, and start seeing what his options are, because he still has some.

It’s easy for any of us to bash this guys, but it has been apparent that he has been unstable at times. Many just don’t like him for being brash, but he was a huge star that came from humble beginnings. Many of us don’t know what that is like, or how we’d handle that sort of success. So why throw stones?

@blkshepherd: No, you don’t pray for him because he lost $80M. You pray for him because he obviously has some deep-rooted issues of the HEART that go far beyond anything that having money could have solved, such as feelings of “loneliness” and a sense that you’re “in hell.” The amount of money that Owens once had only masked the reality of the true condition of his heart, which is the “real you” resides in each of us. The truth is that Owens was always “broke”, he just didn’t know it. Now he does, and I pray he finally comes to realize that TRUE wealth is not financial, because once it’s gone – and it will be someday for even the wealthiest of individuals – it’s gone. The question then is, “Now what?” And, unfortunately, Owens is now having to answer that question for himself.

80 million over a 14 year career is an average of 5.71 per year. That is blowing alot of money over many years. If you have that much money all you have to do is save it or invest it conservatively. Unfortunately, that is a theme that is all too common among athletes. Nobody feels sorry for anyone who blows or loses that much money. He is despondent because the camera is no longer on him. The media loves football not TO. If you happen to notice TO wasnt in front of the camera much this season the people scoring touchdowns were. If you still feel sorry for him, he still receives a nice tax free pension every year for his services in the NFL to keep him from living under a bridge. Life goes on. I am more interested in the athletes that made 80 million and did somethiing with it after their sports career. ahh yes, a success story!

Not a fan of the guy but I am not interested in piling on either.

It is through adversity that someone finds his/her true character.
TO can sit on the pity pot and look for sympathy (which is going to be hard to find I suspect) or he can man up, realize his playing days are over and his ability to live the life of the NFL rock-star is kaput.

He can pull up himself up by the boot straps find a job, maybe even give something back to the world which granted him so much (coaching HS football, working at a kid’s camp etc). The NFL might even be willing to pay him a couple of hundred thou a year to talk to the NFL freshmen about fiscal responsibility (He could be the poster child for “Don’t Let this Happen to You!”)

It won’t buy the Bentley or the bling, but the point is to do something that actually benefits someone else other than himself. Though there may be challenges, the situation offers a chance to find the man within the boy.

I don’t think people read ALL of the story just bits and pieces…cause it clearly states he did like many other famous people and companies for that matter and hired someone to manage his money and they did not manage it properly. He did not choose to be in this situation. Either way all the nay sayers are giving him the motivation he needs to get back in the game! I agree with you War Eagle. You basically said the same thing I said to a friend this morning. T.O. is a boy he needs to grow up and be a man. He does not take resposibilty for any of his actions. If he had good character he would still be making money, but not body want to touch him. He is not a criminal never been in trouble with the law, but the way acts turns people off. T.O. is probably one of the best condition athletes in the history of the league. He could be selling fitness equipment and excercise videos, but the way he acts no one want to deal with him. He brought it on himself people put up with the antics when your the best, but when you slip and move down to just being good the reward is not worth the risk. Grow up and be man take responsibility. I remember he Jeff Garcia threw him a ball hit him right in the hands look like a perfect pass to me and everyone else. He didn’t catch the ball bounced off his hands and Mike Brown of the Bears intercepted it and ran it in for a touchdown to win the game which was in Overtime. He blamed Jeff Garcia for losing the game.

What really is sad about this whole issue is that it’s so commonplace with so many athletes. Also, most of them won’t learn a thing from his example. They all think the money will last forever. They’ll spend it as fast as they can and father a few kids along the way and be shocked when their agent tells them it’s all gone. Let’s hope his momma got a house and car out of the deal.

The dude is broke. You don’t have to care one way or the other. He’s discussed this matter before on his reality show. Someone he trusted robbed him and went to town with his money. Couple that with the bad investments, rental properties that he probably needs to get rid of in order to get some liquidity, and people who were supposed to have his best interests in mind and there you go. Whether you like Terrell or not, whether his attitude on the football field or when he’s with his ‘posse’ or whatever is not to your liking, you don’t have to care. Obviously, by the number of posts on this short write-up you care somewhat, mostly in the negative. But the man is in pain; he’s been in pain for a long time. I hope he recovers from all of his financial problems.

“They don’t pay me to go in there and talk to everybody, and be friendly to everybody.”

This is no surprise, in fact over 75% NFL players go bankrupt within 5 years of retirement. The average NFL player makes $600,000 with an average contract of 3 years. Then USA takes half in taxes and the agent another 10% on that. Factor in the jewelry, their boys and the cars, there is no surprise most go BK. TO on the other hand made much more than the average guy, but his lavish life style doomed him. When you own multiple homes, there is upkeep and when you live a lifestyle that requires that you continue to earn big NFL money, once it runs out, you are screwed. He also supported several of his boys in town who lived in highrises like Ovation off his salary and frequented the strip clubs spending TOs money. What makes this interesting is that he was arrogant throughout his career and made many enemies. No one is sorry for him. As a reader mentioned above suicide wouldnt surprise many, because of the unstability he has shown on and off the field. One other thing, most NFL player are very uneducated. Few have college degrees and most are pampered and never required to learn anything because they were pimped throughout their lives for their athletic abilities.

Never understood why so many professional players go broke..these leagues like the NFL,NHL,NBA etc..should have financial advisors for these players..why these players don’t go with the same people who helped Oprah(Her milllions went to BILLIONS) is beyond me. Stop investing in crap shoots and ex wives and start buying some subway/wendys/taco bell franchises, purchase rental units(especially with all the foreclosures out there..renters will be around for years to come!)..etc..

Also, these players need to get themselves away from the ghetto, if they came from there, and away from friends and non immediate family members(have two nickels to rub together and all the roaches come out to feed)…

Becoming a millionaire is harder and harder to do. Hardest part is the climb.. crashing and losing it all is easy..

The absurd amount of child support that he has paid certainly contributed to his financial problems. I hope the women who slept with him just to get a paycheck end up as broke as he is.

He’s 38 and a proven distraction for a football team. That doesn’t equate to blackballed.

The fact that he is broke is very common for football players and regular folk like us writing about his trouble. Only 8 percent of americans retiring at age 65 live above the poverty level. January 25th, 2012

He isn’t the ONLY one time very wealthy individual out here that has become broke. The list would be very long if you start writing down the names & would take days if not months or years to read off. Whitney Houston got at the time was the largest singing contract of the amount of $100 million about 10 years ago & she’s broke. It’s so many of them, but if you don’t make wise decisions like putting away for a rainy day, using drugs, having kids out of wedlock by different men/women, overspending, etc. this is the outcome of what happens. I may feel just a little bit of sadness for them, but not much. They have made more money than me & the majority of the world will make or see in our lifetime. I guess all of these baby mamas will have to go out & get a job now since spreading their legs & becoming impregnated will not pay off anymore. T.O., get it together, it’s not too late so you can start by sterilization. You have more than enough babies in your lifetime. Pray & ask God for guidance, find another sports employment, it’s not the end of the world, you are young & may think that, but you STILL have a lot to be thankful for & to live for. Good Luck!!

I personally have nothing against TO. neither am I a fan nor have I ever been one but KNOW he will be all right and if he dosnt Well he is no different from any other Adult that is going through a rough patch.

But to just drop everything and Pray for this man where there are SO MANY OTHERS really needing help prayer a home a job and good health and I am going to get on my knees and pray for this man who ran around with his Nose up in the air looking down on folks? With his MILLIONS? Who was praying for him when he was a Millionare?

I have ran across many folks when they were sitting on their High White horse looking down on folks then when they fall to the ground and on the same level as the folks they look down their noses at with head held high Now, suddenly everyone is suppose to Pray for them.
Prayer Dont work like that. I pray for the girl who lost her arm to a Pit bull attack, I pray for the Police officer that lost her life in line of duty, I pray for the elderly couple who lost their lives on that cruise ship that ran aground in Italy. I pray for how that family feels finding out that was their relative that was found after she disappeard day after christmas from her buckhead condo.

Theres PLENTY OF PRAYING that really NEEDS PRAYER. Not saying TO dont need prayer but Hell I need prayer myself. I am sorry TO is not as bad off is the media is making him out to be and if he is Well weclome to the Real World. Who is PRAYING for the rest of us?

GET a JOB like the regular Joe. Pay your bills and take care of those Four kids you made. I will Pray for you to take care of the Kids you made.So my hard earned Taxes wont have to Take care of the Kids He Made. Thats the only Prayer TO is going to get from me.

Hear this story way too often. Magic Johnson runs a program for young athletes who make it big – it is really cool. He says buy 1 car, buy 1 house and hire people to manage your money – the second he hears “dad” “brother” “cousin” he kicks them out of his office. These kids don’t realize that a 300k Ferrari is worth 120 next year. A $12mm mansion has $200k in property taxes every year – and those never go away and never go down.

I feel bad for these guys – I know we can call them morons and, as is common today, take some pleasure in their downfall, but these guys never had anyone looking out for them. Everyone wanted a piece of them and their wealth. And like TO, now that the $ is gone, so are all the doters.

You are right. Jealousy is an ugly trait, and most of the people who seem to “hate” him are jealous they did not get that rich in life. However, that does not change fact that he always came across as an arrogant jerk, and will not get much sympathy from most people.

80 million….I could live for the rest of my life comfortably, help improve the lives of all of my family and friends, save some, donate some to charity, and still wonder what I was going to do with the rest. No, I wouldn’t be driving expensive cars, living in huge homes, sporting massive amounts of bling and partying with all my ’so called friends’. Its is still amazing how we are so quick to judge. I bet most, if not all the people on this blog ever met him, talked to him, or much less knew him as a person. I did, he was a great friend of mine. At the least, he worked his butt off to be the best he could be. He played the game the way it was supposed to be played, then he had fun. Never did you hear of him getting in trouble off the field, never arrested, never tested positive for drugs, nothing. So he showed off when he scored, you paid for the ticket or watched the game. He had a God given talent and used it to compete at the highest level. Not the only person to make mistakes, but sure is being judged like he is. Someone earlier said it best, look at your own life and judge it. We only have one Judge that we will have to answer to one day.

The reason T.O. isn’t playing right now has nothing to do with his age, knee injury or attitude because he can still produce. The reason why he isn’t playing is because I’m sure news about him going broke were circulating around the league way before now. Teams have all sorts of scouts and private investigators who can figure this stuff out.

So why should a team sign a guy who’s gonna be thinking about the $20,000 he’s going to make if he runs 10 more yards down field when he should be running out of bounds to stop the clock in the 2 minute drill?

Tragic! Just tragic! In spite of his antics I always had a soft spot for TO while knowing through the years that this was the likely outcome. He grew up very poor in northern Alabama and if you talk to the folks who knew him at UT Chattanooga they’ll tell you he was nothing (attitude wise) until he hired J. Rosenhaus and started living in S. Francisco. That’s when it all changed–the good with the bad. I can bless alot of people with 80million or even $80 dollars. Our individuals who are blessed to earn this type of income should really be smarter about their affairs due to the manner the media exploits information. However, this is part of Mr. Owens testimony, whether we believe or not we all have one. I am looking forward to see him come back on top and it will be a significant one! We might fall due to the efforts of others but their is a greater responsibility to take ownership of our hand in our failures as well. I would like to see our “Industries” stop “PIMPING” our talented and gifted people. As an educator, it was unacceptable for me to sit back and watch this happen in our schools in regards to our youth. This was a contributing factor to why I resigned from so called “Education.” I believed, As educators, we only speak to our students hearts when We make that decision to do so trust me everyone will not be ready to hear what is real and honest guidance. I believe in teaching the entire individual not only some standards that are required. Trully Empowering our youth to make life decisions is not in our educational system which is where we fail society. Many professional settings do not empower or provide Personal Development. One must seek it for themself. Accountability is absent. Exploitation is taught in our athletic facilities, schools and many professional settings. We teach our young children to be Pimped and sadly many fall for it. Students remember those who took them aside and helped them clean up their fires and cleaned up their attitudes; not dismiss them for them. The real world will not bend over and do it for them so why set them up for a short success and a possible longterm failure. Parents we have a responsibility to teach our children to be able to identify this. Lets not be blinded by the dollars and promises you are a target as well. Look!! If the grades are not there then they do not perform or play and enforce it. Create solid consequences for the actions. Establish some solid discipline polices in our educational settings to back up our educators since we have to always be the professional…. See we all have a hand in a fallen individual somewhere in their journey on this earth. Stop teaching our kids to be victims of their own ignorance. They will be empowered if We empower them. Create a higher Expectation for Them and make them own up to it. This is the difference of Old School Parent verses a New School Parent in many cases. Build this generation up wisely, maybe they might Respect the teaching and demonstrate an appreciation of the “freedom of education!” Poverty can be choice as an adult, at times; however, it is nutured into a mentality over years of wrong thinking, actions and lack of guidance and worthwhile options. Educators, Coaches and Parents our young generation are people first not an investment of talent. Really take to heart what the mission statements and educational statements mean. Talent can take you only so far but an education along with wisdom will take you through many more doors and it will sustain you. No one prevents education accept, our hands, when we do not seek it! When being blessed with opportunity seek the wisdom and “Truth” first and continue to do so throughout the “Process” because that is primarily all it amounts to be is a “Process”. Mr. Owens, will be back with his life in the proper perspective. Therefore, Be Blessed, Know It, Speak It, Demonstrate It!!!! And Bless Someone Else!!!!

just another dumb athlete who think they own the world. more than half the NFL and NBA, MLB former players are broke and poor because and DUMB. when playing like some y’all mention buy 20 escalades for their posses, another another 10 BMW for their baby mommas and and buy ten house for their families and cousins. and for them they buy a limbirginiie and ferrari and mercedes. all cars depreciate. they trade for a new one for every one of their posse and relatives as the season begins but you stuck with old contract. that’s 20% of you income, 10% for you agent,10% for investment such strip clubs and another 10% cousins going to strip clubs and for your self and a course uncle sam gets 50%. so don’t be surprise how many athletes millionaires going to be broke. just look at mike tyson he made over 300 millions dollars and just making it now. that’s what you get when you get all YES FREEloaders and gold diggers around you but at the end of the day you are responsible.

What a pathetic excuse to be called a man. Bet his so called friend that took advantage of his stupidity made him seem like a real big shot when he had money. How can anyone that had $40 Million Net , after taxes, be broke at 38 year’s old? AMAZING.
