Some of the best places to work right here in metro Atlanta

With signs both nationally and locally pointing to more hiring, if you’re lucky enough you might end up at one of the best companies to work for in Georgia, as ranked by Fortune magazine.

The best places to work include grocery giant Publix Super Markets, insurer Aflac, technology company Cisco, gas station chain QuikTrip and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Rounding out the list are the law firm Alston & Bird, Intercontinental Hotels Group, PCL Construction, Ultimate Software and auto dealership CarMax.

What makes them so great? Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta gets kudos for how management tries to stay connected to workers, with senior leaders, for example, holding frequent parties with employees. At Publix Super Markets, the largest employee-owned company in the country, workers get generous annual stock infusions, and Intercontinental Hotels Group, the parent of Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza and other properties, has the most generous 401(k) plan in its industry.

Of the list, Alston& Bird (ranked No. 24 on Fortune’s overall list), Children’s Healthcare (No. 49) and Intercontinental (No. 100) are based in Atlanta, and Aflac (No. 77) is based in Columbus. Children’s Healthcare had the biggest jump up the list, from No. 60 last year.

In the latest signal that companies are doing more hiring, the government reported Thursday that  the number of people seeking unemployment benefits plummeted last week to 352,000, the fewest since April 2008. The decline added to evidence that the job market is strengthening, the Associated Press reported on Thursday.

Yes Publix is a very good place to work. As an employee you are able to buy (Publix) stock. Outsiders are not allowed to do so. So as an employee you also have a chance to be part owner of that store. I love that store. I worked p/t for over 6 years. I loved that job. It is a great place to work! :) That is probably why their customer service is almost always excellent. Of course you will get a few people that are rude, but for the most part you won’t. Walmart has to be the worst place for a person to work… :)

Why isn’t the Coca-Cola Company listed. Aren’t they one of the best employers in Atlanta, as well as UPS?

Coca Cola isn’t what it used to be. Just ask any of the thousands they laid off in the past years. UPS is not bad but I am surprised Home Depot isn’t on the list.

I’m surprised SunTrust is not on this list… Great company!

This survey is sent to companies and they decide if they want to particpate. That is why some companies you think would be mentioned are not. They may not have participated.

Hey Polar Bear…Coke a great place to work? Are you kidding me? I was there for nine years…terrible place to work. A lot of stress….not much recognition….cut throat is the only way to describe how managers ascend to the top. You work hard only to be given a pink slip due to “corporate restructuring.” It happens all the time but they keep it out of the press. When I was there they made it a subtle point, but got the idea across, that you were here to work hard for a few years….put Coke on your resume…then bye bye.

TERRI YOU MUST BE THE ONLY IDIOT IN ATLANTA THAT THINKS THAT…….Home Depot Heck, what are you thinking? 1500 people lost jobs and were outsourced and after Arthur and Bernie left the company went to hell in a hand bag.

Publix sucks. Its only good to managers and full-time employees. Part-time employees don’t bonuses or holidays. And then you gotta deal with rude customers? Will never go back.

I ditto the comment about SunTrust! They are a great company to work for! Good benefits, great vacation policy, great work-life-family balance/culture, and a wonderful 401K match. Yes, they’re one of the “bigger” banks, and they’ve taken some hits over the past few years, but they I love working there and so do quite a few family members and friends.

Children’s Healthcare is only great if you are a nurse. If you work in a support department, then it is horrible. Management doesn’t even know we exist.

SunTrust is a great company to work for, excellent vacation benefits to go along with the holidays. Management really cares, they get that you have a life and want to spend time with your family. Love them!

One day you’ll learn, the best company to work for is your OWN. I’ve done it for 22 yrs. Lots of stress, long hours, getting people to work but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Are you kidding me? SunTrust corporate is a horrible, abusive place to work. Maybe the branches are better.

Publix was a good place to work part time during school – flexible hours, higher pay than the competition, well-managed. I wish I had taken advantage of buying the stock. I know former part-timers who still own 2000+ shares that they accumulated while bagging or stocking shelves throughout high school and college. That’s worth more than $30,000 at the current price, and it’s compounding at a yield of 3.4% a year…

I think DeKalb COunty is the best place in all of Georgia to work.
With all of the benefits, vacation time, and generous compensation, it has to be one of the best local governments in the country.
Of course, it was better when Vernon used to grope us all in the hallway whenever we came out of the restroom.

Wow, in the 12 years I worked at SunTrust I never met a single senior manager that cared about the employees. You cheerleaders have never worked there or must be in recruiting (the most incompetent dept there outside of technology).

The best place I worked was Southern Railway (now Norfolk Southern after Southern merged with Norfolk Western). I worked there nearly 15 years. Benefits were great, insureance, stock plan, and advancement was easy. If I wasn’t retired, I’d love to go back to work for them. (Plus, you get nearly free train fares.)

Don’t believe the hype with CHOA. I think they pay to be on the list. They definitely pressure the employees to provide positive responses on the surveys. CHOA is run by several world class b*tches and it is a depressing and awful work environment.

SunTrust used to be great, now instead of giving to employees there doing nothing but taking away. For a company that likes to brag about giving back to the community it sure doesn’t give back to its employees.

If you work somewhere for TWELVE years, there must have been SOMETHING you liked. I’ve only worked at SunTrust for a year but I really do think they care about the teammates. GREAT benefits, vacation time, etc. For what it’s worth, they also care about their customers too. They’re always giving the employees surveys on what the company can do to better serve the customers. It seems very genuine even if it is a “big” bank.

Yes, I thought SunTrust was great for the first year. When you at last start making a decent (not great) salary, they downsize you. The greatest disappoint to me was when they did away with the 25 year club for employees who had worked there for that length of time…Corp. America has made this mess for themselves!!! Do like I did…work for yourself!

@squirrelly: If you worked at a place for 12 years that sucked, then that’s YOUR fault!

As for the other positive comments, I assume you are sending these comments in during work hours so your managers see that you think that you work at a great place.
