Metro Atlanta’s jobless rate drops sharply to 9.2 percent in November

Metro Atlanta’s unemployment rate fell sharply to 9.2 percent in November from 9.9 percent in October, the state labor department said Thursday.

Although the local figure is not seasonally adjusted, the jobless rate declined substantially from November of last year, when it was 10.3 percent.

The unemployment picture improved because the number of jobs increased by 13,300, the labor department said.

Most of the growth was in private service-related industries, such as trade, transportation, warehousing, professional and business services, education, health care and financial services.

Also, there were fewer layoffs in construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, administrative and support services, and accommodation and food services, the labor department said.

Among metro Atlanta’s core counties, Clayton had the highest unemployment rate at 11.5 percent. Fulton was next with 9.6 percent, followed by DeKalb (9.5), Cobb (8.4) and Gwinnett (8.2).

In the city of Atlanta, the jobless rate was 10.3 percent in November, compared with 11 percent in October. A year ago, it was 11.4 percent.

Last week, the labor department reported Georgia’s unemployment rate, which is seasonally adjusted, had its largest one-month decline since 1977. It fell to 9.9 percent from 10.2 percent in October. The jobless rate was 10.4 percent in November a year ago.

The state rate dropped because of an increase of 22,400 jobs. In addition to retail trade, growth also came in financial and business services, education and health care.

it’s taken obama a while to clean up all the bush disasters, but the economy is now starting to pick up—with four more years in office, obama’s people should have the economy back strong! Four more years!!!

Adam. I like you analogy.

but I think there is something wrong when the glass keeps on getting fuller for a few regardless of economic turmoil, and emptier for most!

Regardless, there will always be rich and poor folks. I don’t see alot of compromising coming from your side. The repub party in the house is a mess, the majority repub senators are voting different thatn house reps. Why the difference?

the tea partiers who recently got voted in will be on the way out shortly. They prefer stalemates as opposed to compromise.

Honestly Norquist has them by the “balls” with that stupid pledge. Doesn’t allow them to compromise at all. I hope Obama uses executive orders to bypass this clowns in the House of reps.

@youobamalovers – no one has yet to enlighten us what exactly Obama did. He extended the Bush tax cuts for two years (thank you Tea Party 2010). However, 2013 will be the largest tax hike in American history…. The actual unemployment rate in the US is closer to 16%, but who wants facts when there is an agenda……………

All of this is pure smoke and means nothing. Both Europe and the US are over loaded with mortgages in an amount equal to 4 times the total assets in the world. The only way out is to inflate the real estate values and drive them up to cover the value of the mortgages. Unless Santa comes in magically forgives all of the debt that is underwater.

“Metro Atlanta’s unemployment rate fell sharply to 9.2 percent in November from 9.9 percent in October,…”

A nice feelgood number, but is it reliable? Let’s hope moreso than the National Assn. of Realtors count of previously owned home sales…which they just admitted is overstated by 3.5 MILLION. Oopsie. The labor department can only count the number of unemployed people drawing benefits, but as someone already pointed out many people have used up their eligibility and dropped off the roles.

Some people are just plain s#u*id. Think about this, recent college graduates are not counted in the unemployment numbers along with people that have run out of unemployment benefits and have quit looking for jobs. I know people that have been out of work for 2 years and they are not counted in the numbers therefore Obama has done zip and made things worse with his class warfare rhetoric. People that work for temp agencies are also excluded after their contract is over so the numbers are not realistic. Take out the holiday hiring, expect an unexpected rise in unemployment being report by the DumbBama media and Administration around February or March.
