Power Breakfast: Combating the recession, new Hawks owner, Georgia banks, gold on eBay

What should be done about the economy now?

In this no-nonsense story, AJC reporter Michael Kanell writes about six possible ideas from the experts — with their arguments and the counter-arguments.

The ideas for boosting growth range from tax cuts, stimulus and more Federal Reserve action, to foreclosure action, a Resolution Trust idea and “something smart” with leadership behind it.

Kanell clarifies the options quite well.

Yes, we need business experience. I wonder if the administration could hire any or all of the following: Richard Fuld, Franklin Raines, Vikram Pandit, Tony Hayward. We’d be lucky to have them! Shame Kenneth Lay’s already taken, so to speak.

This is a worlwide recession. The US is not in this alone. Demand is not there. Consumer spending is down, and the housing market collapse was akin to the table cloth being pulled from the table. Everything on that table cloth crashed with it, especially in the sunbelt where housing and construction drove the economies of the sunbelt. A worldwide recession/depression this severe will not be cured with quick fixes, and there are no miracle workers to be found. The best the government can do is keep smolders from becoming a conflagration. Our form of government limits government’s role in putting things back on the shelf. You want full employment try Cuba.

Gov’t can sure get in the way of economic progress…. with regulations, taxes, fees, permits, like EPA, NLRB, Obama care, etc…

My Dad lived through the Depression in Iowa… he always said the farmers were Republicans in good crop years… wanting lower taxes…. and Democrats in bad years…. wanting Gov’t aid, subsidies, crop insurance, etc… it all depends on whether your paying or collecting ???

We had selfishness, now it is added with anxiety; so the situation is
getting really trembling. I have not seen a person with optimism for
a long time. This spirit is spreading now all over the world.
Even today, as the richest country with the highest GDP and the
highest percentage of energy consumption in the world, the U.S. is still
playing a very key role in changing the world economy for better or worse. That great U.S.A. is infected with the deadly virus of
fear and anxiety combined. Who can heal it? Only through some divine
intervention.

What regulations suddenly appeared in the last two years that impede ecenomic growth? Name one other than healthcare access reform which doesn’t fully kick in until 2014. The “good part” is already in affect: no lifetime caps, no copay on preventative screenings etc, no denial of coverage for persons with preexisting conditions, people in college, grad school and PhD. candidates remaining on their parent’s policies until age 26. Tax breaks for small businesses that offer insurance for their employees. Keep regurgitating the same mantra, taxes too high-whose taxes have been raised in the last two years? Too many new regulations- what are they? Please list them. Businesses have more cash on hand than at any recent times. What regulations are preventing these businesses from making hefty profits? Please list them.

Taxes at an all time low Bush tax cuts renewed, where are all the jobs the “job creators” are supposed to make? Stimulus was 1/3 tax cuts, where’s the jobs? Now I hear people complaining about what? Unions? What are you talking about? Business experience? What, you want the President to open a hamburger franchise and employ 200K people tomorrow? You people are nuts. Just admit you don’t want President Obama to be the President of the United States, you have no reason other than you don’t like him.

Gman.. I didn’t like Bush.. don’t like the system.. we need TERM LIMITS…..and of course the Gov’t can’t run a business.. look at the Post Office… bleeding Million$… delivering junk mail at bulk rates… Postal Workers Union in the way .. UPS and Fed Ex are profitable ! run by businessmen… Carter created Dept. of Energy in 1977.. said we would never use more foreign oil .. how did that work out ?? Gov’t Can’t run a business, but it can get out of the way !

the tea party and republicans caused this recession–it will take Obama years to get all their problems cleaned up. He’ll be reelected and hopefully more democrats are in office to help out people without jobs with more unemployment benefits and better healthcare. Rich republicans are just trying to get them more money.
