More older workers are in labor force

Older workers — those at least 55 — are staying in the labor force longer, according to a report by the Employee Benefit Research Institute.

Forty percent of older workers were in the labor force in 2010 — a steady increase from 1993, when it was 30 percent, EBRI said.

A higher percentage of men are in the labor force — 46.4 percent — than women — 36.4 percent. The rate for women is a record, while the male rate hit its peak in 1975, when 49.4 percent were in the work force, EBRI said. From the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s, the male rate gradually declined to below 40 percent, before it began steadily rising again.

The upward trend in older workers is likely to continue because of their need for access to employment-based health insurance, EBRI said.

Also, older workers need more earning years to accumulate assets in their 401(k) plans, EBRI said.

If you’re an older worker, are you planning to stay longer than you thought you would? Why?

To others in the workplace, do you think this is preventing your advancement? Or do you see older workers being treated unfairly or forced out the door?

sparks – “Hey Billy, is it not true that this country’s budget surplus (as Clinton left office) disappeared during the Bush/Cheney admin.”

according to my figures, over the last 30 years, 20 of those were under Republican Whithouses:

Reagan – 8 years
HW Bush – 4 years
GW Bush – 8 years.

Dems have 8 for Clinton and 2.5 for Obama.

Can someone tell me the strange power that Democrats have in being able to destroy the country over the last 30 years while keeping a Republican President in office for 20 of those years?

I’m 59 and I consider myself semi retired since for the last 6 years I was only able to work temporary contract jobs in the IT Industry. Luckily I’ve reinvented myself by using my knowledge to do computer sales and repairs for the company I own. However, I plan to kick my heels up in 3 more years and take it easy. I figure if they didn’t let me work when I was younger, willing and able to work, to hell with them once I hit 62. Also to all the politicians out there, I’ve been contributing to your forced ponzy scheme of social security for 43 years, now all i can say is Don’t FUGG with my Social Security.

Billy is right. The ungodliness of this country has brought it to where it is now. When people started worshipping the dollar, and only concerned with how much money they can make and the company’s bottom line that we got where we are now.

But he wasn’t talking about those ungodly people. They are considered the “productive ones”.

the government needs to provide a lot more benefits to seniors—this chump change I get now is not nearly enough money to pay all my bills.
