OK a new strategy is needed. This Pro-business, low/no taxes model that has been implemented to bring jobs to Georgia is not working, not wven for the teens looking for summer jobs. GA continues to cut education for the sake of these lower taxes to bring jobs, and we get Nothing but #1 in unemployment, #48 in education.

That’s because most adults have jobs that the teens should have. They live off the taxpayers for the rest of the income they need to buy their iphones, luxury automobiles and gold chains.

another result of the 1/2 million illegals in the state. no jobs for teens! (or legal immigrants or us citizens) how can the illegals protest anything when they shouldn’t be here? oh yeah, the illegals don’t pay taxes which is bad for the state, cities & counties. get them the f out of here.

Woah woah woah. I haven’t tried Googling for the source but how are the defining “teen unemployment rate”? Are these teens filing unemployment claims or does this rate cover any teen who chooses not to work? The way that parents pay for every luxury for their kids these days it’s not surprising that teens might not be employed at a rate of previous generations.

8 years of republican leadership??? Try liberals hiking minimum wage up as much as possible nullifying companies abilities to pay a part time teen worker

It’s not teen unemployment – it’s teen don’t-want-employment. These teens aren’t unemployed, they’re just lazy and not interested in working right now as long as their parents keep giving them everything they want.

@ Elroy, you are exactly right. Illegals take jobs teens typically have when breaking into job market. Think food service…. Teens used to start out working at McDonalds and such, now it’s all hispanics.

My teens vigorously searched for jobs last summer — with no success. They are NOT lazy and are good kids and A students. My daughter finally found a job a local pizza shop, but my son gave up and went back to college later that summer, throughly frustrated at his attempt to find summer employment. Both said that they found that many jobs they applied for were also being applied for by adults 30 years old and up.

Funny whenever there are issues at stake, some actually want to at least try to do something to better it and others just sit on their fat ask and blame some political party. Gas prices too high, blame the democrats, unemployment, blame the republicans etc. I would imaging that these “blamers” cannot get along with anyone and just think, they run this country!

Research will explain that everytime minimum wage goes up…..teen and low-end workers loose jobs. Those of you that said this are abosolutely correct. If I ran a McDonald’s I would hire a person with job experieince to work rather than a texting teen. But, I will add jobs are there and sometimes you have to be willing to do somethings you do not want to. My daughter was laid off and is now cleaning houses and two small businesses to make ends meet. She actually likes it and this is after working in Resaurant Management. She actually likes working for herself.

Another thing teens can do is offer to do odd jobs. Several summers ago I needed some help in my yard and finally had to hire a landscape service. My brothers always did stuff like that in the summer. It would be nice to have lists of teens in my neighborhood who could spread pine straw, mow, weed, wash the car, plant, clean gutters etc. I now live in a rural area and am finding more young people who want to woek and know how.

Teens can’t get part time work because of illegal hispanics and their kids. You go into almost any fast food place and 90% of the time their are hispanics and speaking Spanish not english. McDonald’s for one hires 95% hispanics so they know they can all talk to each other in spanish. If I walk into a place and I hear Spanish being spoke I wiil leave. This is America, make English offcial.

Growing up, here’s where the teens were working including myself:

Life Gaurd
Boat Rental
Video Store
Fast Food
Food Processing (Cherry picking and Poultry)

The first 3 were considered “plumb” jobs since there was a high degree of perks associated with them beyond just the paycheck. Those jobs were also considered “premium” becuse the were difficult to get unless you had some sort of connection that could get you in.

The bottom 2, is where most of my high school and many of my college peers worked. Why? becuse they were easy to get, it was understood that you would be working only for the summer, and you weren’t trying to support a family on what they paid you.

Taks a close look at options 4 and 5, and tell me who’s filling these positions now.

And this is a shock? About the only place I see teenagers working these days are at Publix and not everyone can work there. Up until about 10 years ago, everyone working at fast food restaurants were teenagers. Now most people working there can barely speak passable English. This has nothing to do with the state government. This is because the federal goverment has sat on their arses for the past 10 – 15 years instead of closing our borders.

Not that difficult to understand really. We’ve lost something like 7 million jobs since the beginning of the recession.

There is a lot more competition for jobs…any jobs and there are a lot less jobs than there are people that want work.

Teenagers have no experience and thier schedules are restricted. Many Many people in this economy are under employed because jobs haven’t come back yet.

There’s no reason to panic. This is part of the recession. There aren’t any easy answers.

Hmmm

So a person is here illegal if they speak Spanish? With a lot of people out of work why would I hire a teen who could only work a couple of hours when I could get an older worker who give me full time for about the same pay? It makes more sense to hire non-teens.

McDonald’s wants to fill 50K jobs on hiring day

The Associated Press

11:46 a.m. Monday, April 4, 2011
McDonald’s Corp. will hold its first national hiring day April 19 to fill 50,000 openings at its restaurants nationwide.

The company, based in Oak Brook, Ill., says it is making a concerted effort to add staff as its business improves and as more of its restaurants stay open 24 hours a day.

McDonald’s is hiring restaurant crew and management for full-time and part-time positions. The company’s hiring goal translates to between three and four new hires per restaurant.

Turnover slowed in the past few years because of the weak economy, the company says. McDonald’s sees this event an opportunity to attract employees in a tough job market.

It is also trying to shed the negative connotation of employment at the fast-food chain, once dubbed “McJobs.” About half of its franchisees and more than 75 percent of its managers started as store workers.

“A McJob is one with career growth and endless possibilities,” the company said in a statement.

McDonald’s held a similar event in its Western region last year. More than 60,000 people applied for the 13,000 positions.

Those who are interested can apply in stores or online. Some restaurants will hold events and interviews that day.

there was an interesting interview with a poultry processing facility that relocated from mexico to oklahoma – the whites and blacks wouldn’t go work the hours for the pay, and so they were back with the latino population that they had made a “support america” decision to leave in the first place

high schoolers i know are in competition with college grads who can’t find jobs, and laid off or underemployed adult workers

as for the rest, no direct experience – except for the builder who did my major house addition. he hired illegals and legals – and the legals were nightmare spoiled brat unreliable rip-offs, while his crew of illegals showed up on time and did the job correctly the first time. he even tried mentoring some white kids, time and again, from Spaulding and other outlying counties – what a joke that was…

for every person who screams about illegals taking jobs, there are others who have found whites and blacks to be hopelessly spoiled and roundly unacceptable employees

The teenage unemployment problem has been around for decades. Raising minimum wages (”living” wages in some places) without teenage exemptions is a job killer. Ignoring illegal immigrants who take unskilled jobs and undocumented day laborers sucks the potential teenage jobs away. No solutions (other than maybe e verify which is getting watered down) on the horizon, so this is just the new reality.

Oh Intown Writer – Its not the point of effort, and even if it was, that’s a complete lie. Illegals are scared of the consequences, they need the money. And they aren’t even supposed to be here in the first place! Its so frustrating that someone from another country seems to have more rights and success than me, an American born citizen for GENERATIONS. Not just since the 1990s when the illegals crossed the Rio Grande. I just came of age for employment (16) and I’ve been applying and seeing this article has brought down my hopes so far. Illegal immigrants should be ashamed of themselves and so should the federal government for allowing this to happen, and so should Georgia for not having stricter working regulations. What makes it even worse is that I have to deal with the ignorant, loud, crime-ridden, obnoxious anchor babies that go to my school and take advantage of the free education my mother pays for and just fail and/or drop out. Its a shame.

I’m 20 years old and I spent well over a year looking for a job and could not find one anywhere. Finally I got a job at Dynamo because of a friend who referred me. In these tough times the old adage “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” is more true than ever.

Mr Boot,

Pull yourself up by the bootstraps. There’s no reason for an illegal to be more successful than an able bodied American citizen. I see that you are 16 years old. You’re young enough to be saved. Many people on this thread have stated some valid opinions and facts, but don’t fall into the trap of picking a political side and having your views spoon fed to you. Yes, the world is broken. It always has been broken and always will be broken. The only thing we can do is try to make our society as liveable as possible.

Don’t waste your time hating illegals or any other group at the center of the topic in question. Spend that time and energy improving yourself. Have you figured out what you want to do with your life? Do you know if you want to go to college, the military, or start working fulltime after high school? Get an idea of what you want to do for a living and spend your time learning as much as you can about that industry. You might think it’s not going to get you anywhere now, but life is about being ready when an opportunity presents itself. So get ready.

Most haters feel that someone has done them wrong or that they haven’t progressed as much as they’d like. Meanwhile, the gogetters in life don’t hold themselves back by hating. While the simpletons fight amongst themselves, the successful people are busy getting it done. An obstacle in life is nothing more than an opportunity to show what you’re made of…

Don’t give up on job hunting, you’ve just started. You have a lot of life ahead of you and now is not the time to get discouraged. It’s your world we’re screwing up. Be part of the problem (giving up or quitting) or be part of the solution.
