Metro Atlanta is No. 1 in minority-run firms

Metro Atlanta is attracting the most minority-run firms on a per capita basis, according to a survey of 52 metro areas released late Wednesday by Forbes magazine.

“The ‘capital of black America’ has become a buzzing hive of Hispanic and Asian immigrants and entrepreneurs,” Forbes writes.

Baltimore, Nashville, Houston and Miami-Ft. Lauderdale round out the top five spots. The next five are the metro areas of Oklahoma City, Riverside-San Bernadino, Washington, D.C., Orlando and Phoenix.

Forbes looked at metro areas with populations of more than 1 million. It said metro Atlanta was No. 2 in self-employed minorities and No. 2 as an entrepreneurial region. Combined with a growing population, increasing household incomes and affordable housing, Atlanta took first place, Forbes said.

Metro Atlanta’s foreign-born population nearly doubled — to 710,000 — between 2000 and 2008, Forbes said.

The magazine added, however, that “business leaders fear strict anti-immigration laws may choke off future growth.”

In February, the U.S. Census Bureau released figures that showed black-owned businesses in metro Atlanta grew 99 percent between 2002 and 2007.

Forbes gave a “booby prize” to Milwaukee, which came in last. “The former beer-brewing capital ranks in the bottom eight — or worse — in self-employment among all three major minority groups,” Forbes said.

If our ancestors had not made the tragic, ill-advised mistake of importing that “free labor” from Africa, Atlanta would be a much cleaner and safer city and would likely NOT be No. 1 in minority-run firms.

Any guesses on where these minority-run firms would rank in terms of customer service by their clients?

I’m all for minority businesses, but I have a big problem with businesses that have their signs/ads totally in another language,with no English translation. To me that’s a message that English speaking folks are not wanted here, the owners do not want to assimilate into American society, and frankly is a dumb-ass marketing decision!

Gatormann, if it’s such a dumb marketing decision, why are there so many successful businesses doing it? Miss Duh, if these firms are so bad with customer service, why are they growing so much? Think before commenting.

I’m glad to hear that minority businesses are growing in Atlanta. But it is concerning that the VAST MAJORITY of violent crimes seem to be perpetrated by young black men from the southside of Atlanta. Am I wrong? What can be done about this? I have no ideas, does anyone?

@WC Falcon

In Destin Dawg’s defense no where did he state that the high unemployment, crimes, etc. was a result of the black population in metro Atlanta. The fact that you associated the two together maybe makes you the (indirect) racist one?

In the latest slap, see what the black folks are trying to do through the courts to stop new white cities in n. fulton from forming.
