Now what?
Comments from Verizon Communications CEO Ivan Seidenberg on Thursday left little room for the possibility of a Verizon version of the iPhone any time soon, Associated Press reported.
Speaking at an investors’ conference, Seidenberg said nothing about an iPhone for the company’s current network, AP wrote.
Instead, he hopes Apple will come around and allow Verizon to sell the phone for a new network it is building. The “4G” network hasn’t yet opened for service and won’t be complete next year, AP reported.
So, it looks like AT&T’s exclusive right to sell the iPhone in the U.S. will endure for awhile, despite rumors to the contrary.
Are you disappointed or not?
Would you get the iPhone if Verizon had it? Will you switch to AT&T when your contract expires now that Verizon appears out of the game in the short-run?
If you’re an AT&T customer, have you noticed an improvement in the network lately or not?
Finally, do you agree with the Verizon CEO when he said: “We don’t feel like we have an iPhone deficit?”

Who cares about an Iphone, except the lemmings that stand in line for one anyways? Steve Jobs could vomit, and these robots would want one. Besides, the Android is gaining so much momentum, why would you want an Iphone?

Who cares about the stupid iPhone. I have the Droid Eris and I love it. The only reason people want an iPhone is because it’s made my Apple, its a more of a fashion statement then anything. So, Verizon will do fine without the iPhone, as long as the Droid keeps doing well.

The best smart phone in the market right now is the N8 from Nokia. I am not sure why I would use a phone where there is no multitasking, awful camera, dropped phone calls and flimsy hardware. You all can stand on the line for the toy phone, I will use a real phone.

I always hear about the bad service and horrible customer service from AT&T. I personally have never had a problem with AT&T. I have service pretty much everywhere I go, and have never had a single issue. Also, their phones are better than their competition by 10-fold. Even if my service sucked with AT&T, I still don’t think I would leave because the wuality of their physical products are soo much more superior. As for the iPhone….Don’t get me started. Everybody drinks the Kool-Aid because Stevie J. will get up there in his Mom Jeans and show 20 new ways to drag-and-drop. The fact is: the iPhone is a terribly made product. They are so focused on the technology, that they neglect every other aspect needed in a phone…SERVICE, DURABILITY, GOOD WARRANTIES. The three previous are all things which Apple products do not have…Just sayin…

Android devices are gaining in popularity and selection. The only reason to own an iPhone is to be just like everyone else who has one. It’s herd mentality…..Just look at the photos of those hose bags standing in line for 8 hours to get a phone that was not completely ready for distribution. Further, Verizon is killing themselves by starting their own Android app store.

Thankfully, I am out of contract with AT&T for my iPhone 3G. Was hoping Verizon would have the iPhone next year since I’m ready to upgrade, but I’ll stick it out and keep my fingers crossed that Verizon gets the phone in 2012. If not, I guess I’ll have to hold my nose and upgrade with AT&T.

I got a droid in March and love the android platform plus with Verizon, I have never had a service issues! Android is backed by Google and I think they are a very creative company so they will blow past apple because they have a company that streamlines creativity. Apple made a mistake by making the iphone exclusive to AT&T.

I’m an AT&T iPhone customer and my contract expires in January. I was hoping for introduction (or announcement) of a Verizon iPhone by then, but I plan to switch to Verizon whether or not they get the iPhone. I’m just tired of not being able to place or receive calls inside my home in the middle of downtown Washington, DC. I’ll probably end up getting a Droid in January (or whatever Verizon’s best phone is at that time). For those of you thinking about switching to AT&T for an iPhone, the network matters, and all the neat bells and whistles of the iPhone simply aren’t worth much without a decent signal.

Verizon is an evil empire too. Read my above comments regarding Verizon’s intent to start their own app store. The apps will only be available to Verizon customers, thus forcing developers to remain exclusive to them. As a developer, I can tell you that won’t fly and it will hurt Verizon in the long run. The Droid is an excellent phone, but the carrier is evil.

I have a Droid X, purchased without a 6 hour line wait. The phone is phenominal, there is nothing this phone cant do! This phone has replaced my digital camera, camcorder, garmin gps, ipod mps player, netbook, the comcast home internet modem…….etc! The Apple iphone is merely a fashion statement and more of a toy compared to the Droid X. I now know 8 family members and friends that have Droid driven products on verizon wireless that were with verizon before I was. I was with att for years, costing me more monthly for less services! Im saving about 100 bucks a month with the do it all droid x. Just received the latest 2.2 update, only took 10-15 minutes to complete. Lovee the droid x and no dropped calls!

It syncs perfectly to my Gmail and Google Calendar, has fantastic GPS navigation, access to 80,000 apps on Android Market, and oh yeah actually works as a phone! Added bonus – my HTC phone is made in Taiwan, not communist China where FoxConn (Apples iPhone manufacturer) has to put nets across the streets in their dorm campus to keep their employees from jumping out the window from being kept as virtual slaves…

I love my iphone and have recently upgraded to the iphone 4. I will say that I had a hard time with it the first few days with the signal/reception problems, but got the case for it and it’s fine. I’m sure it’s something they are working on. My only complaint is I wish they would give you the case when you purchase the phone instead of making you wait a few weeks to get it. I just went out and bought one and it’s been fine since (and instead of the Sept 30 date I was given as the date to receive my free case, I got it Sept 18, so I really only had to wait a week for it and now I have 2)!

AT&T no-service will kill the iPhone as soon as the majority of our contracts run out. With similar products coming on the market it’s time for Apple to quit being so exclusive with this product. By the way, did I mention that AT&T is a nightmare, no-service, piece of crap company?

I owe a lot to AT&T. Their pricey plans encouraged me to stay with Sprint. I really, really wanted an iphone, but ended up getting an Evo. Battery life is subpar on Evo, but features and benefits and pricing surpass the iphone easily. I love my ipod touch and it now works with the hotspot service I have with Sprint nearly everywhere I go: have the cool user friendly functionality of the iphone, but with faster 4g service and unlimited data. It’ll even make it easy to get an ipad now. Thanks to your greed AT&T…I’m a very happy customer.

Apple makes great products, but because they are so controlling and protective, they remain a niche manufacturer with many of their products. They are not a customer-friendly company. They make compelling ads for TV, and they make their executives very rich. Not a big fan of AT&T, they don’t have the coverage that Verizon has. The Android appears poised to take over the smartphone market, including the Blackberry.

I’m not disappointed. My family contract with Verizon is over in May. I will go to whoever has the iPhone available at that time. I will be getting three of them. I had an iPhone for 3 years before getting tired of AT&T and switching to Verizon. I currently have a Droid X. I constantly have to show friends things it can do that their iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS cannot. I have 3G service all over Georgia, Free Turn by Turn Navigation with traffic updates, and serveral Google Apps that are not available on the iPhone. Sure, the iPhone has more games and silly apps, but the Droid X has things I need. All in all, an Android Phone on Verizon is going to be hard to beat. Google Music will be out soon, and I wouldn’t count a company as creative as Google out of giving iTunes a run for its money. This is the only area where Android is inferior to iOS. I feel like this is about to change… So.. go for a Droid, and be proud to be a little different. Oh yeah, and to the dude on 85 south every morning playing with your iPhone with your apple stickers all over your car, PUT IT AWAY AND DRIVE. I am tired of swerving to avoid you.

I totally agree with GTFAN! Why would anyone be stupid enough to go backwards to att just for a phone that is unreliable as the iphone. Apple fired the guy who designed the iphone 4, Apple has also engaged in studies of what it will take to make the iphone current and future designs, work on other networks to pull away from att.
Ive got the Droid x that has paid for itself with the monthly savings I am realizing compared to what ii was paying att. Droid X has replaced my comcast internet service, it has replaced both cars xm radio by listening to aolradio with an rca patch cable, it has replaced my garmin gps, I have my own 3g hotspot when in the airport, coffee shop….etc. Verizon’s network is blazing fast! No dropped calls and prefect call clarity without a case! I had no 6hr wait when I purchased it the day it was released!

@John – Very mature comment from a very mature iPhone user. Droid users are on average older, if you would like to perhaps look at a statistic or two before posting a moronic “joke”
iPhones are much less complex than Droid phones, much more restricted on the kins of apps they provide, and do not come with such grown up things like, Adobe Flash Support, Turn by Turn Navigation, and larger than 3.5 inch screens. So, in all seriousness, it looks like you might just be an Apple Fanboy FOOL. Good day sir.

Get a clue people. There is the iPhone, which sets the bar for every other phone to follow… and then there is every other phone just trying to catch up. Apple has consistently made superior products for most of its existence. Without Apple, there is no Windows… without Apple, we’re still using walkmans and buying CDs instead of taking all our music with us in one device. The iPhone is not good for business use so I have no interest in it. MORE IMPORTANTLY, when I want to make a phone call I want to actually hear the person on the other end of the line and also not drop calls. Used to be with AT&T and was a terrible experience. Verizon has excellent service, even out on the ski slopes in Colorado. I don’t think AT&T and T-mobile know where Colorado is.

Im sure the Verizon network might have less problems with dropped calls becasue ATT is loaded with more Smart Phones sucking bandwidth than the Verizon network has in our area ( maybe not in the northeast where RIM rules but thats not video and audio streaming like ATT )
Verizon had their shot at landing Apple but was to stingy to give up a larger percentage of the monthly subscription fee like ATT did ( has been estimated to be upwards of 12.00 per month per IPhone paid to apple from ATT) which industry insiders said at the time was way to much to give up…
Verizons offer was reportedly around 5-7 dollars per month…I like both APPLE and the DROID..I kind of just want them both to keep slugging it out…lol…like Coke and Pepsi

Verizon is a bunch of thieves and I would not have service with a company that cannot keep its word repeatedly and has such shoddy reception. I have had AT&T for several years and it works great. I got an iPhone 3G and really liked it, but hated that there was no bluetooth keyboard support. The 4G with with IOS 4 FINALLY fixed that. I carry a palm bluetooth folding keyboard and my iPhone and can do business everywhere without having to tote my laptop.
No problems with reception or dropped calls once I got my Otterbox for the new phone. I could not be more pleased with the phone, service and how many things I can do with it. The keyboard support finally let me have some of the convenience of my old palm with a great phone and there is an app for everything.

When personal computers were still relatively new, Apple took the “exclusive” approach. Despite having a stronger operating system, Apple sat back and watched while Microsoft built an empire and seized control of the market based on a more open approach.
Instead of learning from past mistakes, Apple is heading down the same road with the Iphone. By the time Apple opens the door to everyone, most people will already be content with what they have and someone else will be the dominant player in the cell phone market.

I’ve owned an iPhone since the first generation 3G. It’s a great device! My bro in-law has a droid and he likes the flexibility that it provides regarding applications. I’m not a app intensive person. I’m happy, he’s happy.
Also, I travel extensively throughout rural Georgia. Rarely, I loose a signal.
Bottom line, these devices dramatically improve productivity and when the movie that we want to see is “sold out” I can find an alternative in seconds. These are indeed great days.

I have noticed more dropped calls with AT&T since they opened the 4G network. We are with AT&T and at this point customer service, is not a forte’ of AT&T. Used to be, Last month I went over my bill, and found 30$ of charges, Changes, to my service that I didnt authorize. Of course I got credit, but one 9.99$ monthly charged really go my goat..Apparantly, there is a company, that sends you a tex message, AND IF YOU DO NOT RESPOND TO IT SAYING YOU DO NOT WANT IT, then it is automatically added to your service, as if you do. The lady, told me I had been paying for it since Febuary. and by the way they sent the message to my 17 yr old son, who naturally, deleted it, never read it….Thought this was strange, but the lady in CS, told me this is happening and they can’t seem to stop these scams, but of course they will go back to whenever it started…WATCH YOUR BILLS AND QUESTION THE CHARGES. The other 19.99$ was for GLOBAL GPS. Now with a I- Phone( and all my ap’s, and features) why do i need to pay 19.99 for global GPS? Again, another unnecessary, charge to my bill…AT&T has the market, the network, the name, but not the prices, service, or customer satisfaction….

Where I live, Verizon is a tad better than AT&T; however, in the areas around me, Verizon is way better.. so I have to have a working phone. All the folks I know in Atlanta, almost none of them have AT&T; usually, they have MetroPCS, Sprint, or Verizon… I wouldn’t mind if AT&T offered iPhone on a prepaid plan, but I won’t hold my breath. Also, if I switched to AT&T for a smartphone, I would have to choose between 500MB or 2GB data caps… these smartphones are data hogs; I used 2.1GB on my Droid last month…I will just cling onto unlimited data on Verizon.
So what if Verizon never gets an iPhone, I won’t leave unless the phone company fails me… If it comes to Verizon, I MAY consider it. However, I don’t see anything revolutionary about it. I am happily sticking with my Droid Incredible with unlimited data.

I’ve been with AT&T for several years. Their cell phone service is terrible. Routinely I cannot pick up a signal in downtown ATL, sometimes I have to walk a block or two to find a signal and if I’m inside a building its also a challenge. Dropped calls are routine. Probably about 25% of the time I use my cell phone the call gets dropped.

I live in metro Atlanta, and I’ve been very pleased with AT&T coverage here. My son lives in NYC, and although he, as I, prefer the iPhone and Apple products generally, the quality of AT&T service in Manhattan has made him switch to Verizon and to give up the iPhone. A recent survey showed that even if Verizon were an available alternative network, 63% of iPhone users would stay with AT&T. I think it comes down to how coverage is where the user is.
Oh, and R.C. Collins, you are not just an idiot, but a racist idiot. Go find some other country to belong to. I’d ask the AJC to have your comment removed, but I think it’s better that you to serve as a reminder that your sub-species still exists.

I will never own an iPhone due Apple’s shortsighted, exclusive, agreement with ATT. Many former ATT customers will never go back, myself included. Thanks to droid, and the EVO, there are much better alternatives out there;-)

As cool as the iphone is, I will not get it as long as it is exclusive with AT&T, because AT&T SUCKS WITH POWERFUL SUCTION!!! I am on my second Verizon phone, and am as happy as could be. They are not iphones, but they work.

What are all these complaints about customer service? I buy a phone, I use my minutes, I pay my bill. Do you get mad at the company when you go beyond what you have signed up for? Then yell at them as it is their fault expecting them to fix your problem. The problem is not terrible customer service, its the terrible people that have unreasonable expectations of a company and the service that they provide. The statements on cell coverage are correct. One company really does have an edge on that and it is Verizon.

All the Droid and Touch and Galaxy are copies of Apple iPhone – they should pay royalty to them!
And Google – the less said the better – stabbed Apple in the back! And you people support Android – it says volumes about you all! Do no evil – crap!

Whatever you do, DO NOT get an LG Cosmos…it’s a piece of crap, and the only reason I stayed with it was because I thought I could upgrade to an iPhone in January. Now, Verizon’s saying that they won’t replace my phone with a model that actually works because I’d have to pay the full retail price. I like Verizon’s service and availability, but their customer service is beginning to get to me.
Is there any way to unlock an iPhone 3G and have it transferred to the Verizon network INSTEAD OF waiting for Verizon to build a “4G” network? Because I’d go buy an unlocked iPhone right now if I could do that (and get the hell away from this crappy LG Cosmos…)

DW is right, diffrent cellular signal, CDMA and GSM I believe. That is one of the reasons why Verizon did not pick up the Apple Iphone the first go around, because Apple refused to make a CDMA capable phone. Dumb.

My company’s new office receives very weak Verizon signal, while my iPhone is rocking full bars. AT&T coverage has been nothing short of phenomenal for me (save for one spot in rural Delaware).

I got my Droid Incredible in July after waiting 5 weeks on back order, the longest I think I’ve ever waited for any product, let me tell you this is the best phone! I recently went on a road trip and compared the GPS on the phone to that in my car the phone was more accurate and being able to see slow traffic ahead saved me in many ways from finding an alternate, gas idling, time etc. If someone were to ask me it would be a no brainer, I’ve converted three people in my office from IPhones to Droids and I know they’re very happy now, not just with Verizon but to have a great phone! As they say “Droid Does”….

I am afraid that if Verizon were to add the IPhone their capacity would tank with all of the new customers. I think that they are smart to slowly add customers via migration from AT&T rather than have a tidal wave of new customers. I have the HTC Incredible and have been very satisfied, but since I don’t have an IPhone maybe I don’t know what I am missing.

I’ve had Sprint service for almost 10 years now with various Palm and WinMo handsets and have been satisfied with the service. That said, I recently added an iPhone 4 to my stable of gadgets because I love the apps that are available for the iPhone. My productivity has improved significantly now that I’ve gotten the iPhone. I can watch NetFlix on the bus, use SlingPlayer to catch the evening news on the ride home, check my bank accounts with Chase, Citibank or Bank of America apps, check my 401k with the Fidelity app, edit and transfer docs with ReaddleDocs, DocsToGo or iAnnotate, take notes with NoteTaker or FastFinga, access my work email, contacts and calendar from my company’s Exchange server, read the news with from any number of news outlets, maintain all my passwords with SplashID, power up my computers remotely with wake on lan, remote to my PC with LogMeIn, the list goes on and on….
Can someone please explain to me how this makes my iPhone merely a fashion statement? And more specifically, what EXACTLY Android “DOES” that my iPhone cannot? (besides live wallpapers and widgets which are purely cosmetic). Don’t get me wrong, I know that Android is gaining apps everyday but there are still are not as many apps currently and lots of the Android apps lack the polish that the iOS apps demonstrate. In addition, many Android owners report less than stellar battery life with their phones.
Conversely, although I was skeptical when I signed up, I have not had a problem with AT&T service yet and my battery life with iPhone 4 has been better than expected. I can easily go an entire day without charging when my Android laden colleagues are running to plug into the nearest outlet. And I’m continually finding new apps for my iPhone that are fun and/or useful.
I appreciate the competition that Android brings to the table, but I think that taking shots at the iPhone with less than complete information is just wrong. To each his own, I like my iPhone. I may add an Android phone to my stable one day so I can try it out. In any event, making blanket comments about the iPhone being just a fashion statement or saying that Android “does” more than an iPhone can without giving any specific examples is just regurgitating marketing hype and demonstrates sheer ignorance of the facts.

to CLEE everything your iPhone does, so does the Andriod OS. I have slingbox, docs to go, scan2pdf, can schedule my directv, check my finanical accounts, pay my bills, sync my mail and calendars with my personal and business accounts, make reservations, use ms ofc suites, use a global translator, use it for dictation, video streaming plus much more. In addition, if I so choose I can create, publish and make money off of apps. I have a co-worker who has and iphone and I the Android OS. Each week or so I get a challenge to see if my OS can do what the iphone can, so far I’ve been able to find an Andriod app to meet the challenge. I guess its just a preference.

I have used both Verizon and AT&T and AT&T has better reception, better customer relations. Have I had dropped calls? Yes. And so have my Verizon using friends. Have I had problems inside buildings. Yes and so have my Verizon using friends. I have a signal booster from AT&T and now five bars. My Verizon using friends have know such option. AT&T has better price structure for my needs. Verizon has soaked me in the past and soaks my friends. So I doubt the sanity of paying for inconsistent service and clueless custormer service.
IPhone works. Consistently. Synchs flawlessy. I know DROID users and while they brag, they are also baffled about how inconsistent their phones are.

To Droid Does,
Thank you for finally telling us what Android actually “does”.
You’re correct. It is mostly just preference. Their capabilities are largely the same. The Android “does” a lot of the same things the iPhone “does”. So where are all the things the Droid allegedly “does” that the iPhone doesn’t? If you’re saying that both phones “does” a lot then we’re in agreement.
My point is that Android fans that keep saying that Android “does” so much more than the iPhone or that people who buy the iPhone are just doing so because it’s a fashion statement are not cognizant of the facts. iPhone users are far from technological airheads who buy a phone that does less just to make a fashion statement. They are just as savvy as Android users. They write ingenious and creative apps. They find ways to make iOS do things that no one ever imagined it could. In the end, it comes down to a choice of platform and carrier more than inherent functionality.
In any event, both iPhone and Android have their relative strengths and weaknesses, just as both AT&T and Verizon have their relative strengths and weaknesses. I just wanted to raise the level of debate from blanket statements about either platform or carrier that are more hyperbole than arguments that are grounded in facts. If we’re going to make comparisons, let’s talk about specific capabilities and not generalizations.
Now if only someone could tell me that they’ve solved the battery life issues with the Android phones….

I’ve been with Verizon since 2000 for my cell phone. I’ve been patient up till now. But with ATT’s exclusivity contract expiring, Verizon had better do what ever it takes to make this happen. I refuse to get a smart phone, or any other phone from verizon that requires a data package unless it’s an iPhone. I’m tired of Verizon sales agents trying to convince me to get a droid when I pay my bill in the store. I’m also tired of all those Droid fanatics trying to tell me it’s so wonderful. And Yet, every Droid friend of mine has had a different phone.
I deal with complicated computers and programs all day long as a tech integrator in a large number of schools. 5or 6 different whiteboard systems, different school website creation tools, three different version of MS Office, etc, etc.. The last thing I want to worry about at the end of the day is Droid. Is it system 1.6, 2, 2.1, 2.2, or what are the specs on this manufacturer of a Droid phone, why’s this one better than that one? AHHHHH! Forget it. I want simple that I know works the way I need it to.
Besides, I’ve used iTunes since it first came out years and years ago. I’ve bought tons of music . . much of it with DRM, and the same for Movies. Not to mention that I have an iPod Touch for which I’ve spent a pretty penny on apps. I want an iPhone!!!! I refuse to spend more money on apps for another platform, (I’ve spent close to $100 on productivity apps, another $50 on game apps, and prob another $30 or so for some iBooks) when I have the apps that I use everyday with my iPod Touch. I know my apps will work on an iPhone and I’m tired of carrying around both a phone and an iPod touch all day. I want one device.
Get it Verizon?!?! There are lots of us that have been patient. If the potential ATT customers don’t get you excited, how about all the long time Verizon customers like me that will be jumping ship. My monthly bills for the past 10 years has netted verizon over $12,000). I will not be a loyal verizon person any longer and just get a droid because that’s all you offer.
If you manage to screw this up Verizon, then I’m gone when my contract expires. I’ll go to Sprint or T-Mobile . .whichever one gets it. . . . I’m still not desperate enough to switch to ATT. I’d rather go back to two soup cans and a long string. The reception around here would probably be better with the cans.
