What will United-Continental merger mean?

After only two years, Delta is losing its status as the world’s biggest airline as United and Continental join forces.

What do you think about the trend toward fewer but bigger carriers?

Do you worry about fares going up and service declining, along with less competition?

Or do you think that these mega-mergers — first Delta-Northwest and now United-Continental — will create a more stable environment for both passengers and employees?

Fares will go up and service will continue to decline as the airlines (and passengers) continue to go cheap. I feel sad to see CO go as it has done a remarkable turn around in the last 15 years. I continue to fly Delta because they purchase the airline my dad worked for (come on, Delta, bring back the Western name and paint one aircraft as part of your heritage!). Anyway, just my couple of cents.

ah, phil, you are an idiot. really, that’s all you got? paint plane with western symbol? puhlease, as for mergers, good…merge. maybe ticket prices will go up and i wont have to sit next to bus people who don’t have a clue as to how to behave on a plane! yeah, i said it! you know who you are…you piss and moan over everything, talk about the “good ole days.” you know, back then, people like you couldn’t afford to fly!! you only heard the stories!!
get a life and don’t fly! btw, i fly delta all the time. love them. no problems. be nice and they be nice. so don’t start bashing the company that puts more georgians to work then any other. look it up.

Lets hope DELTA goes out of business. Absolute worst customer service and terrible delays. Good riddance. Let Airtran expand and bring in Southwest and Jet Blue. They lower fares while DELTA just lowers expectations.

I don’t fly Delta anymore and it’s not because of how big they are, it’s the way they treat their customers. Their service is terrible, their attitude is terrible and I will pay more or drive to another airport to fly with someone else.

Delta – needs competition, and more importantly needs to learn how to treat people they want to return as a customer. I had to cancel a trip for last minute health reasons. The first agent said in order to avoild a $150, (yes, $150) fee to change the ticket I would need to provide the name of the hospital and the number of its phone so they could verify that I was sick. I talked with another agent later that evening when I saw the flight was over booked and they were seeking people who would take a later flight. She checked and said I would need to appear at the gate and perhaps they would issue a change. When I advised I would not only appear but travel on the overbooked plane, coughing and sneezing all the way, and advise the other passengers the reason I was on the flight exposing them to my germs, fortunately she took another approach and found that I could obtain the change without the exhorbitant fee. Not a way to treat your patrons at all. And, does Delta really want to stay in business???

Service will probably continue its decline and prices probably will go up. However, it doesn’t have to. There will still be three large airlines (United, Delta, and American) all in competition. When you look at other countries they have far less airlines than the U.S. and have top-ranked airlines for service and pricing is not outrageous (Canada only has two major airlines: Air Canada and WestJet, for instance).

the last 6 times I have flown (and I don’t fly frequently) I have used frontier airlines, of course you have to fly through Denver but my destinations are always the left coast. their customer service is good (but I don’t have anything to compare it to). Any time in the future that I fly I will use them if I can.

You know, its funny, but the AJC Reported yesterday that discount airlines continue to top customer satisfaction lists for customer service, on-time arrivals, fewer canceled flights and less lost baggage. Perhaps the big-and-getting-bigger-boys should pay attention to these things instead of winning the race to the bottom? Come on Delta- you are the home team! Surely you can do better.

I think people need to stop complaning. Your only paying for a sit. Whoever said you were going to get free food and drinks on the plane. People want cheaper tickets but want all the glory that went with flying 20 to 30 years ago. I think tickets prices should go back up. You can’t please everyone. If you raise prices and stop bag fees people complane. If you lower prices on tickets but charge for extra bags, food or drinks pepople complane.

It means that Delta will buy Alaska and regain the title in 2011. After the union question is finally put to bed with the various work groups of the DL/NW merger, they are free to team up and absorb Alaska.

HT is dumb. The whole point of your story was to complain about customer service at Delta. The $150.00 fee is there to keep the cost of flying down for the people who actually show up for their flight and to cover the spoilage of the seat that goes unoccupied or unsold. The same thing applies for overbooking the flights. If you wanted a fully refundable ticket, you could have paid for it. But you bought the cheapest seat you could find on the internet and then complain when Delta asks you to hold up to your part of the bargain and pay a fee when you want to change your flight on a whim. When Delta relents and waives your fee, you complain about it on the blog. You probably wasted numerous hours on the reservation line complaining about how you should not have to uphold your part of the bargain. At least don’t complain when they do something nice for you.

Mega airlines will treat the passengers as less important numbers. As the numbers of airlines
are getting less throug mergers, there will be less competition on the one hand, and
the airlines can play joint tricks to jack up the prices. Whatever it might be; whether it is socialism
or democracy, the ordinary people pay the price finally.

Delta will soon be back to No. 1 when the flight attendants union is defeated once an for all. United lost its A$$ because of the union and Continental was its only hope. Now they’ve put lipstick on a pig, but its just a bigger, fatter, hungrier pig.

I’ve flown them all and Delta is still the best domestic carrier all things being equal.

You failed to read that the flight was OVERBOOKED. It was not a change on a whim. It was a necessity. What would be the reason for a requirement that a passenger show up sick to get a change on an overbooked flight, perhaps on one with many empty seats, but not on one they had oversold. And $150 to exit an overbooked flight is excessive anyway you look at it. And, the purchase price was the price set by Delta on its site, not some discount provider.

wow. just wow…
the first post had merit, as did a small handful of others that came after. but the second and third post were just mean to the first poster.

and then more name calling from others towards even more posters??? i came to this site b/c it was one of the first listed on google. i was just trying to get more info about the merger and most of the posts have name calling, idiotic comments towards others, and hateful juvinile slander against other posts.

REAAAALLLLLLY?
sure the interweb is full of haters, but post-for-post this page is the worst i have seen in a long time regarding a serious topic (e.g. something in the mainstream news as opposed to the blah comments of pop culture on, say, youtube). i really feel sad for the people in Atlanta and surrounding areas who choose to live in a moronic state of mind.

i know this is a fairly regional web page… and guess what? for the others (like myself) who are not from the greater Atlanta area, and who happened to be “passing through”, you have really made yourselves look bad, juvinile, petty, and just plain pathetic!!! you have really lived up to the neg stereotype of the hillbillies of the south! shame on you. and i really feel sorry for the intelligent people of the Atlanta region who must put up with the massive amount of small minded ppl that hail from this area of the USA.
shame shame shame.

United has a bad customer service record, while Continental’s is relatively good. So what’s the name their going to live under? United. Is it possible to be more stupid? What level of greed allows this kind of stupidity?

Here’s an idea: If you want better service on airplanes, act like the kind of person who deserves amazing service. I love my job, and I work hard every day to ensure that the passengers on my flights have an enjoyable experience. However, more often than not, I’m treated as if I’m invisible, or nothing more than a bimbo placed on the plane to make sure that the passengers get their free Coke. I realize that I have a customer service job, but it’s not too terribly difficult to treat your flight attendants like people instead of servants

I do not think the airline I fly every couple of months is the same one described in this blog. The one I fly is named Delta and their service, from the curb to the seat, has been excellent. Delta is the worst airline. Always late, terrible customer service and because they are single threaded through ATL, its always a crap shoot, especially in summer. Can we please bring Southwest to ATL — probably the only domestic airline that really gets it? Avoid Delta at all costs.

I don’t care how many mindless a-holes DELTA employees in the metro area. I already pay taxes to City of Atlanta that provide for idiots with no concept of customer service to receive a paycheck. But I have a choice with airlines and I choose to NEVER FLY DELTA AGAIN. Its a repeated pattern. They provide no discretion to their mindless employees, just so the face-to-face morons can gleefully say “can’t do anything” and hand you a complaint card while saying, “call that numer, tell them about it”. I’m not calling a number, I’m flying Airtran or any other carrier heading my way. You folks must be DELTA employees because you are really sensitive. I don’t care if you lose your job, its not my problem. If the folks at Home Depot start crapping on my head everytime I got int he store, I’l shop at Lowes. gas, homes, cars, clothes, food, schools, taxes and every single thing you can possibly name has gone up in price over the years. it’s a natural progression of the marketplace. airfares are still cheaper than they were 10, or even 20 years ago and we’re wondering if fares will go up with the latest merger? why should they not go up? everything else has. yes, i do work for an airline, and it amazes me that people will pay 150 bucks a night to stay at a hotel on their vacation, but they gripe about paying 150 to fly 2000 miles to get to their vacation destination. you don’t like the price? I live in Baltimore and have a choice to fly many discount airlines that service the area. I can’t lie, it is nice to be able to fly for a low price and I credit the low cost cariers for making travel affordable. I use Southwest and Airtran a lot as they have many non stops out of Baltimore. They are fine airlines. However, I also fly to Salt Lake often and have two non stop options Delta or Southwest. For a five hour flight, the choice to fly Delta is a no brainer. It is far in a way superior for a long haul. On Delta I get Directtv, internet, clean plane, and a reserved seat. I credit Delta for attempting to differentiate their service from other airlines in a positive way. Five years ago, I could barely tell a difference between airlines. Good job Delta on trying to be better.

Its amazing how folks try to make this a class war, “get back on the bus”, “get in your “trailor”. Sounds like a bunch of TeaBaggers on here. The problem is customer service, not price. I could care less about my ginger ale and peanuts, I just want a ticket agent that’s not a complete jerk. When travelling, you will one day have an unexpected delay or other problem, and when that day comes, DELTA’s jerk employees will do absolutely nothing to help you. Other airlines, in my experience, make a slight to great effort.

For all these loser thinking its a class issue, you are probably the poor lost souls living in $400K house with a mortgage and squirreling away pennies in your 401K that actually think people are talking about you when they say “tax cuts for the rich”. Get a clue. Make an effort to be nice, kind and decent to others, strangers, even dark skinned people. Its the only way you’ll ever be significant and its more rewarding than watching cable news programming.
