Does delay of white iPhone 4 signal larger issue for Apple?

Another black eye for Apple?

The company says the white version of the iPhone 4 will not be available until later this year, Associated Press is reporting.

Apple had originally said the phones would be available in late July.

Apple says the white gadgets have been more difficult to manufacture than expected, AP writes. It did not say when the white models will be available.

The company says the black models, which went on sale in late June, are not affected, AP reports.

Given the previous antenna problem — and the strong criticism — do you think Apple is being overly cautious? Correctly transparent?

After years with a golden reputation, is Apple losing its touch?

Fact. Apple pissed me off. Oh and the back of my phone got cracked at nothing. Did they have to make it two sided glass? Lord.

makes me glad I haven’t forked over any money for the iPhone…
I am still fuming about the almost bi-yearly “update” of the iPod!
(I have a 2nd generation nano!)

Same thing happened to me. The phone is awesome but the design is not near as tough as the older one.

As a typical world-class AJC journalist (lol) I’m sure that you listened to the earnings discussion the other day and reviewed the associated data. From that I’m sure you picked up that Apple is really declining and has no future or losing its touch. Thanks for your outstanding, insightful commentary. Are you a real person or just a bot that once a day grabs a trite business bit and posts it.

It’s too bad that the AJC lost its touch a few decades ago.

iPhone may be a great phone, but buying one apparently makes you a member of some kind of cult that thinks Steve Jobs can do no wrong. The Apple fans are lunatics.

I just placed my order based on this bogus story. I love Apple products. If you ever had a Mac or and iPod, you would be a believer as well. It’s not a cult Kris G, it is a following of people that prefer to use dependable products. Since I don’t carry a phone in my back pocket….I’m not too worried about the composition of the phone. And the antennae issue is way overblown. Apple rocks!

i’m actually not that much of an apple fan. have an iphone 3g, kids have nanos.
though i do recognize that over the past several years they are one of the few companies showing any innovation and are regarded well enough by people to actually have a “cult”.

the story the bot commented on was a very typical business issue that happens everyday by every company – things don’t always go to plan.

i just find it funny that the company with the biggest drop in readership/mindshare/marketshare in the country (AJC) fills space by spurring debate about trivial business issues with Apple.

The AJC started losing readers in the 1960s due to its extremely liberal editorial policy. They’ve tried to become more balanced, but by that time, it was too late – older readers had left, and younger readers get their information online (and not the AJC).

I only look in occasionally, but as long as Cynthia Tucker, Jay Bookman, and Mike Luckovich are still there, they’ve lost me. I can’t stand those left-wingers.

New iphones a joke apple fanboys really got love knowing so much about a product you dont even own yet. That being said i have the iphone i see the problems daily i have dropped more calls with this then any other phone i have ever had way over hyped and im very sorry that more responsible actions have not been taken……

I have the new phone… There’s nothing wrong with it. I haven’t dropped a call… However, I can reproduce the signal degradation issue if I squeeze the hell out of it. But that’s not much of an issue because I don’t have the phone like a gorilla in heat!

I agree with the earlier commenter. Please check Apple’s recent earnings and stock price. Everyone should be so luck to lose their touch in such a fashion.

Yes, Jobs made a misstep in how he chose to handle p.r. surrounding the antenna issue. However, a stable of products that, overall, provides superior user experiences will continue to keep Apple “golden delicious”. The marketplace will always have a taste for products that dramatically change the way people live their lives. This delay in putting out the iPhone in a different colorway is a minor issue.

Doubt it. Macheads are like Scientolgists. I’ve owned a few of their products. Not sure what the big deal is other then their ad campaigns play into peoples sense of individual vanity. They are nice too if you are scared of technology and want to pay more for a rather basic product. When the white ithingee comes out, people will stand in line like sheep, and and L Ron Jobs will rake more cash passing off an average product in a different package.

This is really nothing new, and not really specific to Apple. Whenever companies release the “newest” of this or that, they tend not to really get it 100% right the first time. You have to wait for about a year after any new launch, as by that time, they’ll likely work out the ‘bugs’.

Although I do VIVIDLY remember when they released the first Iphone back in ‘07, then dropped the price $100 a month later… lol ticked off a lot of people, and rightfully so.

Mr Unger sure did his homework.

About 3 weeks ago Apple became the largest tech company in the world (market capitalization).

The Ipod, Iphone, Ipad are all selling in the millions. (remember the fools who said Ipad was just a large Iphone and would fail?)

Apple is a company that makes innovative products in the real world, not some fantasy company that sells perfection.

Study after study shows that the overwhelming majority of people who own their products like them and keep buying them.

A cult? A cult is the right wing wack jobs who believe Obama was not born in Hawaii and that Sarah Palin is not ignorant, or that GW Bush actually believed there were nukes in Iraq (Cheney: “we know where they are”)

There is a following for Lexus, BMW and Mercedes because they are well made cars. There is a following for Apple because they make innovative products that are better than competitors.

Great Point AtlJack. Does market capitalization directly correlate to product quality? Isn’t it true that you Utopian Unicorn Chasers hate large multinational corps. as much as anyone? Pick your battles dude. You just sound kind of dumb. Drive you Lexus’ and Beemers and Mercedes and such. Shoot, you can even continue to name your children after them. Just remember, we are all on the same team here and you should focus more on how you can make this world better. Driving cars made by people who killed my family is very obtuse. Good luck with everything fella.

Because people appreciate innovative, quality products it is a cult? True you will never see people wait in line for the latest, greatest offerings from HP, Dell, Gateway or Compaq. No million pre-orders for that fancy new zune mp3 player and the Droid is quite popular…wonder why they are buy one, get one free?? Makes the market share look good, who needs profit? Windows is a blatant ripoff of the mac operating system (I’m sure they will get it right someday). I am perfectly happy with my imac, macbook, ipod & iphone…if you don’t want to buy the products for your own personal reasons, fine but don’t criticize those of us who do!

As a long time Apple/Mac user (1982)(it ran on wood), it would be okay with me if they slowed down the innovation a little. It’s hard to keep up with the Job’s. I laugh at my IBM friends for all the time they have spent on tech support. Life is too short–get a Mac!

By the way, the second most hotly debated thing since 1980 (after politics) is the Mac/PC debate. Around where I live, in 3rd place is the (still) hot debate over whether man REALLY went to the moon. It’s about 50/50, with some saying it happened in a TV studio and the other half saying it really happened and that is what messed up the weather for the last 40 years! I kid you not!

I have fallen in love with my iMac. I like how it starts fast and rarely loses its’ focus. Or is that me? Great computer and the keyboard is the best. I even bought an apple keyboard to use on my PC. Their products are superior to PC based. I do love my Dell Latitude 530 but it doesn’t hold a candle to this puppy. Why am I infatuated with Apple? Maybe because they don’t have the same issues that I have had ad nauseam since owning my 5 PCs.

I love my iPhone. I bathe with it. Use it as a coaster. Tuck it in at night. Who needs a love life when you have an iPhone? I posted pics of the FedEx tracking sheet on my Twitter and Facebook every hour because those are just as annoying and I have no life other than to draw attention to myself for owning a PHONE. It has an app to let me know when my cereal is going to be soggy. Beat that. I even have a car seat for it in my Jetta next to my Mac that does get viruses now. Boo hoo. Or wait, maybe that was an optical illusion too Steve Blow Jobs.

I don’t get it? Why do people go off and bust on apple for not getting a phone “perfect”. Oh wait, I forgot! Phones aren’t perfect, and so aren’t the companies who make them? It’s like buying something really expensive that you want, if it doesn’t work out the way you want it to, you bring it back and get another one you like for an exchange or don’t buy another one. Simple as that. Oh and not only that, apple pretty much proved there point.

You try coming out with a gadget, that sits in your pocket, and can do over 500 things?

I recently upgraded my phone from a blackberry bold 9700 to a apple iphone 4. And when you grip the phone a certain way around the chrome siding… Look at that, it loses service? And yes the iphone 4 does that to, but I have never had any drastic problems with not having ANY SERVICE AT ALL.

JL Cullen made his point to. If you didn’t like it, or it wasn’t “perfect”, bring it back.
