Planning to buy Apple’s new iPhone 4?

The Wall Street Journal calls Apple’s new iPhone 4, which will be officially rolled out Thursday, “a major leap forward” over its predecessor in both hardware and software.

It has some downsides, the WSJ says. The most important one is the overwhelmed AT&T network in the U.S.

But overall, “Apple has delivered a big, well-designed update that … keeps it in the lead in the smartphone wars,” the WSJ says in a comprehensive review.

Are you planning to buy one? Why or why not?

Yes! Mine is arriving in a couple of weeks! I’ve been waiting to get an I-phone, my husband has had one for about two years and loves his. When it was time to upgrade I decided to go for the new one. I’m getting one for internet access, a great camera and video recorder, face to face chat and the thousands of apps available. So happy to read it’s getting good reviews overall.

Nope-purchasing the Android Incredible. I purchased the IPhone 3g after standing in line for 4 hours only to have a phone that answered calls on it’s own, dropped calls repeatedly, video quality worse than my 3 year old sony Ericsson, address book scrolling would freeze, phone rebooted on it’s own without me even touching the phone.
To add insult to injury, I needed to schedule an appointment to take the darn thing back after having to prove to the Apple employees it was the phone and not the network. I laid the old Sony Ericsson next to the Iphone, the Sony had a full bars of signal strength and the Iphone had 1 sometimes no bars of strength! I received a full refund after declining the offer of a refurbished Iphone 3g and kept using my old Sony Ericsson haven’t looked back since-

Good luck on the Verizon network with your Droid once Verizon’s network also reaches a critical mass of data-intensive smartphone users. Will you be racing to Sprint next?

Nope. Awesome phone but I am not willing to spend that much each month, I’ll keep my money. And only a 3G network. Sprint has a 4G network.

I’m going to stick with my iPhone 3G for at least a little while longer. In terms of plans, it makes more sense for me to stick with AT&T (as sad as that is). In terms of phones, I’d rank my favorites as follows:
HTC Incredible (Verizon)
HTC Evo 4G (Sprint)
iPhone 4 (AT&T)
Droid X (Verizon)

Droid X ranks last mainly because I have not been able to get much information about it.

These phones are all really close, but I really like Android OS and, after upgrading, I’m not too impressed with iOS4 so far.

I have the 3Gs so the 4G will be a definite upgrade. The IPhone is the best phone that I have ever purchased. The Droid may be good, but the IPhone is it, plus my monthly plan is only $20 more than I paid at Sprint, but I am getting so much more.

The iPhone is great in terms of features and ease of use, but the AT&T network sucks and at the end of the day, it is still a phone. I am tired of not being able to complete a 30 minute phone call without 2 or more drops.

Hopefully, Apple will wise up and put this great phone on a network where you can actually send and receive calls. I had the 3GS for 9 months and the dropped calls, poor battery life, horrible customer service and spotty network caused me to cancel my service. Apple must have a sweet deal because I would never go back no matter how great the phone is. ATT has too many issues to mention….

I will be upgrading to the iPhone 4 and will also be buying 3 more as presents. My parents who have had such a hard time learning to text have done easily with the iPhone. Plus one more for my brother, our whole family is going iPhone.

It’s simple: it does everything many need while doing it in a manner that’s intuitive. And, it looks sexy. My mother, who does not even know how to turn on a computer, let alone send a text message, does online banking, texting, email, and photos on her 3G. IT WORKS, and PEOPLE ARE EXCITED TO USE IT. Bad press, good press – the iPhone is being talked about more then any other smartphone. (disclaimer: I owned a BB Bold and 2 Droid phones. They don’t touch the iPhone.)

2 more cents: AT&T’s network is sluggish at times because they have a huge subscriber base with heavy data users (looks like people are enjoying to use their iPhones all the time). If Verizon had as many of these then their network would, too, experience problems. Hey, it’s a small price to pay for being a successful carrier. The other guys wish they had that problem – I would! Finally, AT&T moved to a “pay for” program in terms of data usage. With its planned upgrades and new pricing structure, these problems will dissipate. Truly, one cannot not actually believe that there is such a thing as “unlimited.”

Verizon had a very large base of data-intensive users. Especially with Blackberry customers. So I don’t think that argument holds water. Nevertheless, I think all carriers will faces slow network issues with the lack of cell phone towers. And as we are well aware here in Georgia, NIMBY rules even if the tower looks like a big ol’ pine tree. LOL!

As my name implies, of course. However, beeing an Apple fanboy, I know it’s best to wait until the next revision. Early adopters always get burned, and the preliminary results indicate that is the case now (yellow blotches on the Retina display, dropped calls due to new antenna configuration touching your hand, etc.). Of course, that’s easier said than done since I have a reservation and I desperately want.

If I was interested in dealing w/ the bag of hurt that is AT&T (customer service nightmare I’ve experienced on top of their network), I’d at least wait until they resolve the screen yellowing problems as well as the left-handed signal problems. Having to buy a $30 piece of silicone to insulate their new external antenna is not a real solution.

I’m going to hold out till July to see how the new Samsung Galaxy S looks on TMobile. Right now the Evo is still the top phone given its features and relatively cheap plan. W/ my corp discounts a 2 line family plan is ~120/mon including data and taxes. I haven’t been able to find anything from AT&T or Verizon for less than $150+ w/ fewer min/txts.

Having a fully functional phone with everything I actually need (including no contract) for under 10 bucks a month, and having a brain to go with that, no, I’m much better off all around without one. Not to mention that AT&T is holding users for ransom with their data tier program and the worst network and service on the planet.

Art Vandalay

you all realize that if Verizon had near the data users ATT has that its network would flat out crash. AT&T has one of the stronger networks it is just overloaded. I have had AT&T since 1997, switched briefly to T-mobile and know plenty of people with other networks and they all equally suck. Also no smartphone i have ever had has worked as smoothly as the iPhone, it led me to switch to all Apple products and reduced my stress 100%, no more spyware and computer crashes. Also if you use your phone for you know, those things everyone used to have called jobs instead of watching Justin Beiber videos on youtube, then the feature of getting online and sending and receiving emails while on a call would be a feature that could not be given up to switch to another network.

I speculate you made your “wealth” several decades ago, the game has changed sir. Why does there have to be some competition, droid, blackberry, iphone, they all are for the same purpose its like personally attacking someone for their preference of Ford or Chevy. If you don’t have a need for anyone of these phones, which ever one your prefer then you either don’t have a job or you won’t have one long because some “20 something” with the ability to be constantly connected will come in and be more efficient than you. At the pool, the beach, Turner Field for a weekday game, an airplane, or anywhere else i never take a “vacation day” i’m always there in touch and “at my desk”. We don’t have to choose between rent or a phone because we have jobs in fact we have the jobs YOU were laid off from, because we work more efficiently for less. Also, nobody has to ask permission from the boss to go stand in line, i know the concept is hard to fathom but if you work properly you are never “out of the office” its called call forwarding and email. In fact many prominent companies have or are switching from Black berry to Iphone and regardless are doing away with traditional vacation days because nobody is ever out of touch, you log in your time from *gasp* your alien technology evil future phone

I will be going to the Lenox store after work to pick up my reserved phone. My contract on my 3G is up soon so upgrading is a no-brainer since AT&T will charge me the subsidy fee whether I take a new phone or not, so I will. Will it be perfect? No, but I used my sister’s Droid this weekend and was unimpressed. It’s not bad, but not as smooth as the iPhone. I’m sure it does more, but as a professional programmer, at the end of the day I want my gadgets to just work – I don’t want to have to hack and customize them to no end, and with Apple this is accomplished. Note that Microsoft’s new mobile O/S is going the same direction (doing away with hackability for ease of use).

Apple has to stop doing this too me. I am just getting over my exhaustion from making fun of people with the new Ipad at work and now they are coming in with their new phones. Don’t get me wrong I love having new material but you need to put some space in between product releases so I can rest. I’m sorry but did you really just take 6 hours of vacation to by a cell phone? When did you suddenly become a 14 year old girl. Did it come with Twilight tickets? Who are you going to text first, your always dissappointed in you parents, the girl who won’t text back about how happy you are with you new phone, someone at work who is pissed for covering for you all day? I know text your cat. Didn’t you give her you old Iphone you paid $500 for two years ago. Maybe your not one of them. Maybe you feel a little dirty about standing in line for a phone on day one, but you look at all the misery around you and once again try and by happiness… Didn’t work did it. Oil is still leaking, work still stinks, relationships not working out, and in the end this really is just a phone, not a life changing event. How come no one has asked me about my cool new phone yet. Maybe if I pretend I am talking to someone they will notice it. Hello I have the cool new phone that 10% of the polulation has to have on day one while the rest of the world doesn’t care….

The best part are the guys buying them to flip on Ebay. Not a bad deal. Stay up overnight. Buy a phone. Sell it to an idiot for $800. Fools and their money keep buying apple products.

Are the phones being sold today different than the one being sold 2 weeks from now? A month from now? You really can’t wait that long? You people are so gullible. You are just making a weird rich man weirder and richer.

Stand in line to listen to Gary…..It’s cheaper(I think) and makes more sense.

@ Art Please, STOP pretending to be someone that you are NOT. You are an obnoxious postaholic. You live in a shack at the end of Gwinnett-Briscoe runway for goodness sake! You know good and well you can’t afford the new iPhone! Quit living in a fantasy world George!

“Why is it that those that like the iPhone just talk about how much they like it…while the folks that don’t have one or want one resort to name calling, insults, blatent stereotyping and the like? If you don’t want one that’s one thing…but when you start the rest of your bleating and whining…sorry but you sound too defensive to be anything other than jealous…or just insecure.”

@ fishtales What shortcoming(s) are you trying to compensate for by purchasing the “look at me!!!” iPhone? It’s certainly cheaper than the sports car you can’t afford, I grant you that! Save the money sweetie, the iPhone won’t help. :(

I pre-ordered mine on June 14th in a local AT&T retail store. Mine was on my doorstep when I got home 6/23. One day earlier than anticipated! The new phone is awesome!!!

Sorry AT&T and Apple I will not pay 300 bucks for a phone that barely works like its supposed to in the city much less outside the city limits , all this AT&T network is overloaded and has data intensive users excuses is crap , Verizon has more subscribers so therefore they probably have more data users than at&t and you can make all the excuses you want for why you like att but that dosent take away from the fact that your iphone is giving you poor service instead of making excuses try switching carriers or wait till the iphone is on another network .

^ Thomas, I would switch carriers … if I had poor service. This will be my 3rd iphone, and I don’t get dropped calls. I hear that gripe about AT&T, and maybe some people have it, but I guess I’m just blessed to live in an area of good service. … And also have good service everywhere I go, always. Weird. Maybe you just don’t know how to work your phone? I dunno.

Metro…it’s a PHONE…that’s all. The fact that you think people are trying to overcompensate for something makes me think this is why YOU buy things. Maybe not a fancy phone…but I’m sure you spend money on things you probably shouldn’t either. Maybe a new pair of shoes…that dress you think makes you look oh so sexy…upsizing your value meal…etc.

LOL @ Ellie Mae “I do have some pretty high-end electronics and 2 graduate degrees.”

Where were we talking about education levels in any of these discussions? Sounds to me like you are saying “look at ME I am so smart with my two degrees!” by forcing that irrelevent fact (doubtful) in there. “I have TWO degrees so I am SOOOO much smarter than you hundreds of thousands of lemmings out there buying a cellphone.” Seems to me you shouldn’t be trolling the AJC blogs insulting those loser tools while you should be somewhere curing cancer. Thanks for making our dreary world so much brighter with your vast intelligence!

^ what about when u travel? do you get 3g outside most major cities? I don’t know how to work my phone? I do know how to work it which is why I get great coverage , Look im not saying that the iphone is bad but if all these people are complaining about att network then there must be something to it , people do complain about verizon and others but the complaints aren’t nearly as bad as att it seems ,

This 65+ grandma has a G3 and LOVES it! Great apps for keeping in touch when I travel plus use constantly to find places to visit and how to get there while on a trip. I will upgrade to a G4 just as soon as my current contract expires and they offer me a discounted price on it. Many of my friends have iPhones and we freely admit they’re toys. If I just wanted to make phone calls my old “beam me up, Scotty” flip phone would work. So long as you can afford them, toys are fun!
