Air travel: Have you heard from stranded family, friends?

With most of Europe’s air space shut down by volcanic ash, we’re wondering if you’ve heard from stranded family members or friends. If so, what have they experienced?

Are they sleeping in the airport or have they managed to get a hotel room? Or they being gouged by inflated prices because of the demand?

Do they think officials are doing the right thing by being cautious? Or are officials over-reacting? What do you think?

Airline officials and some pilots say that passengerless test flights show it is safe, Associated Press reports.

But meteorologists warn that the skies over Europe remain unstable from an Icelandic volcano that continues to spew ash capable of knocking out jet engines, AP writes.

Finally, did your family member or friend say how airline employees were treating passengers?

ofcourse they are “doing the right thing.” only an idiot would want to fly in ash- knowing that you could die!! i’ve been stranded. my job takes care of me, thank God. sounds like the ajc is trying to dig up some dirt with comments like ” how are airline employees treating passengers….blah blah blah.” THEY ARE TREATING US GREAT…YOU SHOULD ASK- HOW ARE PASSENGERS TREATING AIRLINE EMPLOYEES? i’ve seen folks getting so angry, and nobody can stop a volcano!!!!!! stop bitching people….you want to fly in that??????? i’ll stay on the ground till it’s safe, thanks….

Flying is just too much of a hassle under normal cicrumstances. I don’t know anyone that has been stranded; can’t afford to fly. It’s best to err on the side of safety, as we learned on 09/11.

Dag,

Good point, airline employees are treated badly by unreasonable paxs. Why do passengers scream and shout when airline aires on the side of caution, and why do passengers always waot until the board the airplane to use the lavatory? They sit out at the gate for long periods of time, walk by bathroom after bathroom in the terminals, and then as soons as they board they walk through the front door and right into the bathroom!

Swing Out Sister have canceled their entire American tour, including Thursday’s show at the Variety Playhouse, because they can’t leave England.

I am affected! My boss is stuck in Sweden and now I have to make all of the tuff decisions. I don’t want to overcharge anyone for things, and I dont want to undercharge either. I can handle it, but I dont want to be scrutinized for any decision when he gets back!

My son-in-law was supposed to be home last week from his deployment to Afghanistan. First the coup in Kyrgyzstan delayed his flight. Finally he made it to Kuwait just in time for the volcano to erupt. He’s still in Kuwait, and his wife and family still are waiting. It’s gotten almost comical.

The Airlines are most certainly gaining profits on the alternative routes to Europe. I have seen fares go from 1K to 4K to sold out notices within minutes within the last two days. The real issue is that most carriers will not tell you that the International leg of your travel was canceled until your on your first travel segment. My Atlanta to Houston to France trip would have been a prime example had I not checked for myself!

dramadeb, “it’s comical,” not really. fine, put him on a plane, then it goes down due to ash. would that be “comical?” right, didn’t think so.
oh, just one more thing to “mr. d,” IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON WITH THE VOLCANO, AND YOU ARE GOING TO FRANCE, YOU ARE AN IDIOT. OMG, I LAUGHED WHEN I READ WHAT YOU WROTE……OMG- IDIOT

I am stuck in Berlin now! Rescheduled my flight several times, only to have the flight canceled, luckily was visiting my boyfriends family here and so have a place to stay and friends here. But it is kinda hard when I have so much going on at home and want to get back to Atlanta. Delta has been pretty nice, but I havent needed to much from them. I do think it is funny that the website for the consulate here says they have no plans to transport stranded US citizens back to the US, when England is sending its Navy to pick up it’s citizens, and France and Germany both have sent special low flying planes to retrieve their citizens. I think if it continues will cause alot of problems getting food and other supplies here when everything is so dependent on air travel.
