What’s your iPhone strategy?

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple plans to begin producing this year a new iPhone that could allow U.S. phone carriers other than AT&T to sell the gadget.

The new iPhone would work on a type of wireless network called CDMA, the WSJ reports. CDMA is used by Verizon Wireless, AT&T’s main competitor, as well as Sprint Nextel.

Verizon declined to comment for the WSJ story.

But what do you say?

Will you wait for Verizon or another carrier before buying the iPhone?

AT&T has come under criticism because iPhone sales initially overwhelmed its network. But the company says it has been investing billions to beef it up and improve service.

If you’re with AT&T, have things improved? Will  you bolt to another carrier if the iPhone becomes available?

I’ll wait until hell freezes over before I buy an iPhone or any other wireless. When did we acquire the need to constantly be on the phone? The love affair puzzles me. Admittedly, there have been many times when I could have used one, but the poor transmission quality and need for charging the battery don’t appeal to me. Not to mention the cost.

I have been having trouble with my AT&T DSL connection recently, tho. Maybe because it’s now overloaded since they’ve invested billions on this problem and neglected the others.

AT&T is the only reason I have not bought an iphone. I know too many coworkers who bought an iphone and have poor phone service (dropped calls). It’s just too expensive to have and not perform its’ primary function as a phone.

Wait? For how long? Verizon will most definitley take its sweet time coming out with the iphone. Verizon is always the last company to get anything new or even follow a trend. I hope they learned their lesson with the iphone and release it asap but I dont see that happening. I think I’ll stick to a android device for now, I expect the iphone to come out at the end of 2010 or early 2011. Remember verizon is slow and doesnt release any information till the last minute.

@TnGelding – try one for a week.. you’ll understand. It’s definately worth the wait to dump AT&T. I’ve held on to mine for two years in hopes that VZW would finally offer it. AT&T sucks! Very bad customer service.

My patience ran out last week waiting because my wife and I are Verizon customers. We got the Droid and are extremely happy with the service and the phones. In my opinion Apple waited too long so Verizon did what was best for their customers by coming up with a great alternative and teamed up with Google.

When Sprint gets the Iphone that will be a great match. Sprint has 4G in major cities and will have 4G across the whole country by the end of the year. Sprint will blow away AT&T and Verizon out of the water. In terms of price and service Sprint already blows away the competition, however they need a very popular cell phone to take away customers from AT&T and Verizon.

I recently switched to AT&T to get the iphone. It was less expensive than my blackberry with Verizon that could never connect to the internet consistently. Plus I got tired of carrying an ipod on business trips in addition to the blackberry. AT&T phone service isn’t the best, but I never have problems accessing the internet or receiving text messages. Would have preferred to stay with Verizon but they wouldn’t move on the iphone. Doubt I would incur the fees to switch back to verizon.

Adam,
I totally agree with your coworkers. I have been with AT&T for years. I don’t recall having an issue with calls until purchasing my Iphone. I LOVE the phone itself but the service is awful; dropped calls, weak signals, no signals. I hope Apple contract with Verizon so I can say goodbye to AT&T. If Apple is smart and want to see an increase in sells they would definitely partner with Verizon, and if they do I predict a tremendous drop in AT&T sales. It sounds as if only the new Iphones will be compatible with Verizon, but I am not worried because by that time my contract will be ending and I am willing to pay money for another Iphone with excellent coverage.

I’ve had an iPhone with AT&T for almost two years now and I can honestly say I’ve never had a single dropped call. However there are still a few areas near my town where I don’t get service at all and 3G is only available in the bigger cities. Edge network is extremely slow. I’m paying $30/month for my required unlimited media package but I can’t really use the internet much unless I’m on wifi because Edge is so slow. I might potentially switch to Verizon if I can save money, although that is unlikely.

To the person that mentioned taking his iPhone over to Verizon.. Sorry, but CDMA carriers in the U.S. require proprietary handsets that are linked to one carrier only. They also do not use sim cards. In other words, your old iPhone is not CDMA compatible.

I’m happy with my iPhone and AT&T service. iPhone moving to Verizon on CDMA network means you can’t surf and talk at the same time. An LTE network iPhone on Verizon means your coverage won’t be the traditionally rock solid Verizon coverage. I doubt Apple would be able to put both LTE and CDMA radios in the device.

I’ll stick with AT&T, thank you very much. If I lived in New York or San Francisco where AT&T coverage isn’t as great as here in Atlanta, I might be singing a different tune.

I am an Iphone user and will not move to Verizon.

I hope that all of you ATT haters realize that Verizon is on a different network…CDMA….whereas ATT uses GPSM. The complaint from their customers is that Verizon doesn’t support multitasking. Like talking on the phone while answering a text or email. Or texting/emailing someone while talking on the phone. That’s the whole point of an Iphone…being able to multitask.

And, 4G will not be available nationwide on Verizon until sometime late 2011.

FACT: AT&T had trouble a year ago with the massive data use spurred on by the popularity of the iPhone and other smart phones. People blogged and complained, and the negative stigma remains, with people thinking it’s still bad.
FACT: The network improved dramatically. PC World magazine, which TRASHED AT&T’s network just last year, just did a comprehensive 3G test and praised the improvements, citing AT&T’s speed at 67% faster than any of the other 3 main providers, and tied for best reliability.
FACT: When the iPhone comes to Verizon, they won’t permit being able to talk and surf the web at the same time. AT&T does.
Check out the test results: http://www.pcworld.com/article/189592/atandt_roars_back_in_pcworlds_second_3g_wireless_performance_test.html

Seeing as the iPhone has been out for a few years and I still don’t have one (renewed a Verizon contract twice already!) I’m pretty sure I can wait a few more months if I were to decide to get one.

I don’t care anything about the iPhone for Verizon or anyone else. It’s a vehicle for them to sell you more services for more money. All I need my phone to do is call and text, don’t care about a camera, a web browser, and all the other stuff, because I have a life.

Well, when me and my girlfriend got our iPhone’s back in February 2009 and the network was just horrible. There were certain areas around Atlanta where my phone would drop calls, sometimes I wouldn’t be able to make a call out. Within a few months, I’ll say by June, we’ve noticed our calls stopped dropping in those same areas. Our calls may drop every now and then now, but it’s not something drastic.

I’m absolutely waiting for a Verizon iPhone. The only reason I don’t already have an iPhone is because of AT&T’s horribly inconsistent service. I was going to get a new Blackberry soon, but with this news I will make my trusty little Blackberry limp along until the iPhone is released at Verizon.

Victor

I have had both services in Metro Atlanta and an iPhone for several years. AT&T has improved their service markedly to where I get 3G everywhere now. Once an a while I get a dropped call but I am also a ham radio buff for decades and recognize the properties of cellular radio itself at microwave frequencies as the cause.

But the big issue to me of any iPhone on CDMA is that CDMA is an inferior technology to AT&T’s GSM. You will not be able to connect to the Internet and do all the neat stuff you see in an iPhone commercial while on a phone call at the same time on any CDMA network. You can not even do it with any other phone Verizon has. The other issue when using data is speed. The 3G GSM used by AT&T is simply faster, period.

Verizon is going to start replacing their CDMA network with a 4G network later this year so thankfully CDMA is going away soon. Everyone will have to buy a new Verizon phone that includes old CDMA and the new 4G for awhile then it will be all 4G when they are finished. If Apple is giving Verizon such an iPhone this year then that will be interesting but I doubt it.

BTW everything about AT&T has been a positive experience. I have bought three iPhones from them. I can not say the same about the other carriers which I have had simultaneously for business reasons. Verizon has been the most expensive to deal with and Sprint has had the worse customer service. Even today Verizon has a huge $350 early termination fee if you decide you want to leave or buy another new smartphone. AT&T’s ETF is half of that and prorated over the life of a cellular contract.

BTW the iPhone has been a unique investment. I broke one and found out I could sell it broken on Craig’s list for the same price as buying a better one from AT&T. These college students fix them and easily sell them overseas since GSM is a world standard.

CDMA is pretty much still used only in a few countries and is not a worldwide technology. You would never be able to pull something off like that with a Verizon or Sprint CDMA only phone. Verizon has some Blackberriers that include both CDMA and GSM which work in different countries but there is no room in the iPhone case for the chips you would need to pull that off. Such an iPhone would have to be thicker and heavier.

Had no problems with the iPhone and service for the longest time, but right around the one year mark of having the phone, the problems began. Weak signals, no signals, spotty/inconsistent signals. Drooped calls were never a problem until a specific day I can remember when I dropped about 10+ calls that one day, and have averaged about 4 dropped calls a day since. I did not have these kinds problems when I was with Verizon. I like the phone enough to deal with these problems for now, I guess that is what AT&T was banking on from us. But if I could take this phone to Verizon, I would do so as quickly as possible.

I’ve had Bellsouth Mobility/Cingular/ATT service for years minus about 3 when I had a company phone (Nextel- which I loathed but my husband still had ATT). I only drop calls in certain dead zones- most of which have been dead zones for years (it’s hard to get around the: “I don’t want a cell tower in MY backyard… but I will complain my head off when calls drop”). I finally broke down and bought an iPhone last year and LOVE it (I’ve never even owned an iPod). I have great coverage and rarely drop calls unless I’m in out in the country.

The funny thing to me is how we’ve gone from only having landlines and very limited access to the internet to demanding universal cell & internet coverage in less than 20 years and then we complain when we don’t get it in every single little place! Seriously people, think about the technology that goes into your little handheld computer and the investment it took to get us this far.

As John stated, you will not be able to take your ATT iPhone to Verizon because they are different cell technologies. So you’ll have to buy a new device just like you would now if you were switching Blackberrys between the two networks.

I have had hit and miss help with ATT over the years and the couple of bad ones have left me ready to bad-mouth the company. BUT I did have to call last week for an issue with my son’s phone and was not on hold at all (seriously, as soon as I got through the IVR menu, my call was answered by an English-speaking human!) My issue was resolved in just a matter of a couple of minutes. The guy even put me on hold to call the cell phone to ensure it was working properly before hanging up with me. I was definitely pleased.

By the way, it’s not that Apple or Verizon COULDN’T make an iPhone that was compatible with Verizon, it’s that Apple signed a deal with ATT that they wouldn’t (ATT has been giving Apple a nice little chunk of change for each iPhone they sell). That contract has now expired. I believe in the next year to 2 years, you’ll see the iPhone for other carriers.

thanks Victor for doing such a great job of explaining why Apple chose ATT and not Verizon for the iphone. Verizon’s technology is old, slower and not used in many countries anymore. Their claims about having a larger network and so bogus because their technology is old. Apple could not give them the iphone because it wouldn’t work worth a damn on their old network.

I haven’t had any problems with ATT. Been using them for years. Calls get dropped for many reasons, not enough towers, mountains or tall buildings blocking the signal, etc. It’s not a landline, so don’t expect the same quality of service.

Victor

In looking back at the comments some have made I would like to add the WSJ may have made a wrong assumption that Verizon is getting an iPhone. Sprint is CDMA too. Since Sprint already has the new 4G data network in a number of cities in the USA it may be that Apple is rolling out a 4G iPhone that includes CDMA. That would be a neat piece of technology if Apple pulls that off this year. An iPhone that does video conferencing in a normal phone call would be possible on AT&T’s 3G GSM but would be even better on a 4G network. AT&T is rolling out their first cities with 4G later this year. I bet Atlanta is among the first to get AT&T 4G.

It will soon become a race to see who can build the nation’s first coast to coast 4G network.

Video(should have already had it on the 3G)..better GPS…voice recording..and “faster” web browsing…I hope with the new iPhone HD or iPhone 4G or iPhone Team Awesomeness that it pushes a bunch of stuff that makes it worth while for these owners of 3Gs to want to get it and shoot give them an option of trading their old phone in and get a “discounted” rate…just my opinion..

First generation iPhone user here. Made the switch over to AT&T in December 2007 in part because of the iPhone, but also because Verizon was gauging us with their BlackBerry plan. Since the switch I’ve found AT&T’s service to be much more reliable with a stronger, more consistent signal than what I was getting with Verizon. I don’t have 3G on my iPhone (first generation), so I can’t speak for those with 3G issues, but EDGE is adequate in Atlanta for surfing the internet. I’ve also found that EDGE is faster in Atlanta than other cities (New York City, Charlotte to name a few), which is nice.

A few things to consider for those hoping for a Verizon/Sprint iPhone adoption:

- Verizon was offered the iPhone initially, but turned it down due to Apple’s micromanagement requests. I think this issue still stands as relevant today.
- More pertinent (and perhaps lesser known) is the introduction of Verizon’s App Store, which will be included on Verizon’s smart phones in the coming months. The iPhone’s App Store is already a huge draw for consumers, as well as a point of pride for Apple, and I believe the conflict between Apple’s and Verizon’s respective App Stores will be an issue between the two companies. Should/can Verizon include the Verizon App Store on an iPhone?
- I can’t see 4G networks having any affect on Apple’s choice of carriers right now. Apple isn’t known for providing customers with the most up-to-date technology on its products, a fact I resent despite being an Apple fan. 3G was a developing technology around the time of the first iPhone’s introduction, much like 4G is now, yet Apple didn’t include 3G until the second generation iPhone in 2008. Sprint can brag about 4G all it wants, but until Apple decides to include 4G compatibility in their iPhone, it will remain a non-issue.
- Apple is well aware of AT&T’s network struggles, but they seem to remain committed to AT&T. Apple seemed to “go to bat” for AT&T through their commercials touting the iPhone’s ability to talk/surf at the same time on AT&T’s 3G network, and it could be argued that the billions AT&T is investing in its 3G network will be enough to satisfy Apple to remain with them for at least another year or two.

To conclude, a Verizon iPhone would prove beneficial to consumers, however I just can’t see it happening yet. The compatibility issues between Apple and Verizon that plagued their negotiations in 2007 still exist today, and I can’t imagine Verizon’s backing of the Motorola Droid’s “iDon’t” ad campaign, clearly targeting Apple’s iPhone, helped Verizon’s cause any in the eyes of Apple.

I was waiting on Palm to do something terrific, but it looks like they are down for the count. I am an AT&T customer, needed to replace my Treo 650 and recently purchased the Blackberry 9700. So, I am stuck with AT&T for the next two years. I would love to go to Verizon, but they are simply too costly. Even if I went to Verizon, though, I still would not get the iPhone. I don’t trust Apple (or Microsoft, for that matter) and I particularly do not like that the iPhone battery is not customer-replaceable. I had a HTC Touch Pro with Sprint for a few years, the phone was OK, but I hated Sprint so much, and their customer service was so lousy, not to mention they refused to honor the warranty I was paying $7 a month for, so I left. I was intrigued by the iPhone, so I made an impulse buy and went with it and AT&T. I haven’t had a problem with their customer service, or any problems with dropped calls at all. Every now and then I hit a dead zone, but it’s usually in a basement or something. I have yet to see a phone that this doesn’t happen to.

I do hope to see Verizon and Sprint get the iPhone though. It’s a great device, and extremely easy to use, and the more access people have to it, the better.

I’ve had Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon, and none can compare to Verizon. I ported my number to AT&T because I wanted the iphone and it was searching for a signal in my living room, that was a problem.

With T-Mobile my phone did not have a signal and I was advised to go stand close to the road in order to receive a signal….WTH???

Sprint, I can’t believe that no one has bought them out. Yes, they have wonderful plans, but if you go to the backwoods down south it will not work at all. I need reliable service at all times, so i’ll stick with what and who I know and that is Verizon.

All I can say is, you get what you pay for!!!!

I must say that I am a native Atlantan and will only use my hometown products which include Southern Bell (now AT&T). The same goes for buying Coca Cola, Home Depot, etc … BellSouth helped build this town and many families are dependent upon this company. Verizon awoke a sleeping giant in November with their derogatory ads and now the company is investing billions and billions of dollars this year to make sure that the network is functioning. I have noticed an awesome difference in my cell coverage so I must thank Verizon for waking up AT&T. CDMA is an outdated and obsolete technology so good luck Verizon.

Considering that Verizon admits my house is a dead zone for them and they have no intention on getting it service in the near future, I’m pretty sure the iPhone is out. It was out anyway, but after the way Verizon treated my boyfriend, I’m glad he moved over to my network with Sprint. We can actually make calls in our Brookhaven home! Imagine that.

To be fair, T-Mobile and AT&T also have dead zones in my home… obviously going to stick with Sprint and HTC (both of which pair up with Google on a regular basis anyway for any Google bed-lovers here…).

Had an Iphone for years, I travel on most weekends and traveling is so much easier with it. The possibilities are endless. However the only complaint I have with ATT is the 3g coverage. Just like the commercials, it is only limited to mid major to major cities. No dropped calls though. Verizon is a bit more expensive and I would not want to incur the expense of switching to Verizon, plus I did customer service for Verizon and probably wouldnt want to be one of there customers. Not a bad company and the network is good but I am good with ATT. All in all I think people will do fine with ATT unless they are in small rural towns alot and need the higher speed 3g coverage. I will say this the convenience of talking on the phone and being able to do other media related things at once is a huge advantage, especially for business men like myself. Verizon will need to work on that capaility. However ATT is constantly upgrading there 3g coverage because they are getting killed in the commercials lol.

It took me weeks to figure out a new cell phone plan, because I didn’t want to pay extra for data ($30!!!). All I wanted was a simple messaging phone, with a keyboard, but almost everyone wanted to require at least a $10 data plan. I stuck with Verizon (and my 20% corporate discount) because I could get a slider phone. AT&T would’ve required at least an additional $10; Sprint was the other alternative. There is no way I’m paying $30 extra for unlimited data.

Well, Sprint PCS has (what I think) is an IPhone killer (the HTC EVO 4G). coming out this summer. I’ve been with Sprint for 12 years and haven’t had any major problems. One of the main problems that I had with Sprint was the 2 year wait for a (main line) phone upgrade with a huge rebate. Now, the wait is only 1 year. The last I’ve heard there was no insurance on the IPhone. If my Sprint phone has any trouble, my $7 per month allows me to get an alomost new phone with no questions asked. I checked with AT&T and for what me and my 4 additional lines get with Sprint would cost $40 more per month with AT&T.

I have the iPhone and it works just fine to me. Yeah, Ive had dropped calls but dang, isnt that every phone company! Hell, I just call the person back and keep talking! Everyone in my family has an AT&T iPhone- 4 people. We love our iphones. I used to be a huge blackberry fan. I quit cold turkey once I got my iPhone. I’ve never had a problem with iPhone or my AT&T service. If Verizon can get it, more power to them. EVERYONE should have one. I’ll stick with my faithful AT&T, where I can talk, text, and FACEBOOK all at once. To be honest this phone creates an addiction unparallel to any crackberry itch that I’ve ever had. Since I can’t complain about my coverage or customer service, I have no reason to jump ship.

The iPhone is dated by now so there’s no rush to switch left. Sure existing iPhone users may want a refresh and Verizon’s much bigger network but there are better devices out there. The recently announced(avail next month) HTC Evo/Supersonic on Sprint incorporates 4G, 4.3″ multi-touch, 1Ghz processor, latest Android, 8MP camera/1.3MP front facing camera, Hotspot support for 8 devices, HDMI, and even a handy kickstand for those who enjoy the 720p streaming. If it’s available at a reasonable price, I definitely see myself going to Sprint since ATL has 4G coverage. The iPhone is still pretty much the same as it was in ‘08 and there are several devices that provide significantly more utility for the money.

As for the call/browse multi-tasking going against Verizon, I’d hardly call what the iPhone has multi-tasking. My TMobile Android phone can talk/browse and also stay on my chat clients (AIM, GChat, MSN simultaneously) or 3rd party software at the same time w/o having to hack the phone. Of course the only real way to multi-task on a phone while talking on it is either to use the speakerphone, headset or a BT headset w/ the screen active and no smart phone battery lasts very long under that type of usage so it’s of limited value. If my BT isn’t handy and I need to look something up I usually just tell them I’ll call back even though I can keep them on the line while running an app or messaging someone.

Even my old Blackjack on Tmo had been able to do basic multi-tasking since ‘06 and I don’t pay anywhere near AT&T’s extremely expensive data plans. I also get 1,000 anytime, nights/weekends, data, 400txts, and can tether my current phone to my computer all for less than Apple charges for voice alone.

Fact: By Paul constantly saying FACT he comes across looking like a jerk and a Apple apologist.

AT&T has improved but their customer service still gets lower and lower ratings based on how they treat their customers. In fact they are the lowest in the industry! See article below:

I guess treating customers poorly just because you have a phone no one else does is not a good business strategy.

ATLBoy,

Bellsouth is no longer a homegrown company. Didn’t you notice the tens of thousands of layoffs and jobs shifting to Texas following the merger? Sure AT&T wireless is still based here but the strings are being pulled from Dallas. They even dumped the lease on their HQ and the building subsequently went into foreclosure.

The majority of workers left in Atlanta are support workers and some legacy back office functionality. Sure there are plenty of landline workers left in the state but the bulk of the real income jobs are gone as are all the contractors/vendors that were built around them.

I don’t see any real value in buying from large global companies that just happen to be based in Atlanta and I work for one. Shareholders, boardmembers, etc aren’t necessarily aligned with the city or the state. They’ll move jobs and infrastructure anywhere they can get the best tax break and as a shareholder I’d be pissed if they didn’t.

AT&T coverage SUX! If you don’t live in ATL., then you know what I’m talking about. I left Verizon 2yrs ago because AT&T service was cheaper for my BB (pearl). Wanted to save $. Big MISTAKE! Dropped calls, bad service, and horrible coverage unless you are in or around a larger city. 2 wks. ago, I was travelling to Fitzgerald, Ga. when 1 of my tires went flat. Tried calling for help after realizing my spare was also flat,(NO SERVICE). All I got was a big red X. So now I’m stranded. Cool thing about small towns is people there will try to help you. A guy drove up (30min. later), grabbed his phone and called for help. When I asked him about his service, he said Verizon. June 6th is the last day that I will be an AT&T customer. It can’t get here soon ENUFF!!! What good is a cell phone if u can’t use it when you need it?!?

I am not into marketing for any particular carrier, but as a corporate support person, I have dealt with most carriers, T-Mobile, ATT, Verizon and Sprint specifically, i addition to daily contact with RIM.

Domestically, ATT is hands down the best, despite Verizons misleading commericials. Internationally, T-Mobile is the best. I rank Verison and print about equal with customer service, but connectivity and performance, ATT on the domertic front and T-mobile internationally. I would only use those two when it comes to cellular service. have friends who complains about Verison and Sprint alot. T-Mobile subscribers are reasonaly as happy as ATT.

I do think that all carriers are extremely over priced; they know we will pay for the service, regardless of what it rise to. As consumers, we should demand a reduction is service. The cost is 60% more than it should be, as with most everything we use.

I use ATT in the metro area only get a few drops; I am on my phone alot bascially accross all points of the Metro Atlanta area.

I’ve had an iPhone for two years and I love it for everything EXCEPT making phone calls. I can’t wait to dump A.T.&T. If you travel at all, you no doubt know what I’m talking about.

Actually, at my office building there is a funny routine that goes on all day long. There are constantly people walking around the parking lot looking at their phones. Those people all have A.T.&T. service and they’re looking for a signal (sometimes they find one and many times they don’t). People with other providers have access in the building and in their offices. Those of us with A.T.&T. might as well just turn the phone off once we enter the building.

AT&T totally underestimated the entire iphone experiment and their network was completely exposed in the process. While I can understand this, I don’t get their policy to bury their heads in the sand and pretend everything was fine. I called support 20+ times and they made it sound like I was the only subscriber having problems. Dropped calls, data errors, coverage gaps, numbers I called every day that came up as invalid numbers, etc. My two years are up with ATT and I will not re-up for any reason. I’m taking my business elsewhere as soon as there is another iphone carrier. I understand Verizon may experience some difficulty in the early going but I’ll take my chances. I don’t talk and surf- don’t know many that do- so that’s not a big deal. I’m done with ATT playing their game at my expense.

I guess I am one of the few that doesn’t have an issue with AT&T. Ironically, I just got an iPhone today, and I’m loving it. I’ve been with AT&T for 10 years, and I’ve never had a major issue with my phone service. If a call is dropped, which doesn’t happen often, so what? Just call the person back. I’ve never blamed my service for that. In fact, I hardly ever have a problem with keeping a signal. It must be all relative to your location, the user, etc. And as far as their Customer Service, I just received the best service ever from a sales rep.

Verizon may have better plans, I don’t know, but they don’t have wide selection of phones. It will be a step up if they start selling the IPhone.

Todd, what are you smoking. I have to lend my Verizon phone to my ATT iPhony using friends often. ATT service, particulary in rural areas, is NOT as good as Verizon. PERIOD. And of course the 3G coverage of Verizons is light years ahead of ATT. Remember the ‘there is a map for that’. Remember how ATT tried to stop that ad and the judge basically told them ‘but it is true’.
ATT may be good enough for you, and in certain urban areas may be better, but in the US over all, VZW wins.
Maybe you just don’t get out much.
Nothing like listening to someone brag about their iPhony and how superior it is to my device, then when you ask them where it is, have them tell you that they didn’t bother bringing it, there isn’t any service around here. WHAT? Mean while I’m checking my emails and on the internet at 3G speeds….

My mom and brother have at&t , my wife and I got verizon prepaid and eventually switched to billed service and out of all those sprint/nextel att and verizon , verizon was the only one whos service stayed up and running WITHOUT getting the dreaded “network not available ” message during the whole 2hr trip from albany to waycross, i was suprised . I stopped back to see how the discussion was going.

Did you know that if you AT&T offers microcells now. These are like your own personal cell tower that hook up to the Internet and provides 3G data and voice service to your building. The cost of one of these devices is $150 less rebates etc. That is a nice solution for small businesses with a number of workers.

Then there is a super slick way to enhance your iPhone coverage that was disclosed by David Pouge of the NYTimes this week. It is an iPhone app called Line2. What that does is adds another working number to your iPhone. It duplicates the iPhone telephone interface too for that number.

Then line2 allows you to make and receive calls using VOIP wifi data or 3G data routing in addition to the regular AT&T voice network. Calls made that way do not count against your cell minutes and are completely free.
If you happen to be in an area with no 3G or wifi service in teeny tiny town GA the calls are routed through AT&T’s regular voice service and you pay cellular minutes. There is a monthly fee for the second number and the VOIP connection to POTS of $14.95. But the benefits are tremendous. Businessmen can have what is in effect a telephone switch board that routes calls to different departments and voice mail boxes even if all the answering parties are you yourself. Used smartly it you can cut your bill to the absolute smallest amount of minutes that you pay for. In your house, office, or McDonalds, anypalce there is wi-fi you can have a great signal for a clear phone call even in teeny tiny town GA.

That is just one of the many things you can do with the ‘magic’ of an iPhone. You can even set up a completely free conference call with up to 20 people with line2 and the iPhone.

Even without line2 on AT&T you can take a plain old iPhone and easily add multiple parties to a conference call. It is so simple compared to the lesser technology phones. I can be talking to a clerk about picking up some items at GNC with all those weird names and ask her to wait a second, punch add call and my wife’s picture, then merge calls to have her speak with me at the same time. I know what I am to buy and she does all the hard work of explaining exactly what she wants. Meanwhile during the call I can check my email complete with pictures and documents while the two talk. To find the GNC I did not need to know anything other than how to spell GNC because the phone knows exactly where I am. I typed GNC in the search box of the maps app and ten red pins drop onto the map indicating the ten closest ones. I tap on a pin and the name, address, and phone number appear. Tapping on the phone number calls that GNC automatically. Taping on the icon on associated with the pin shows me a photo of the store and all the surrounding stores in that area so I can see where I need to go when I get there.

The practical benefits of the iPhone are enormous and easy to use. Then there are 160,000 apps you can choose from to customize the iPhone to your needs. many are free. Others are only a one time fee of $0.99 to a few dollars. If more than one in your family has an iPhone you can all share the apps without having to purchase them all over again for each iPhone or iPod Touch.

One CPA who is from Uganda that I know was longing to hear her language and news from ‘home’. I demonstrated to her using my iPhone how she could tune into any radio or TV station from there that had an Internet feed and she could listen all day long to music and news from ‘home’. She bought an iPhone.

I happened to get a beep about a Smyrna speed trap on my iPhone during a visit to Emory heart. The doctor asked me about it and I showed him the Trapster application. When I went back for a followup he proudly told me he had bought an iPhone and loved it.

Things like that make the iPhone one of the neatest pieces of tech you can buy today and a really big deal if your favorite cellular network will allow them. That is what the excitement for Verizon users is all about.

I was already with AT&T, so I’m still with them on iPhone No. 2. I got the original when it hit $250 refurbished and then got a 3GS for more speed and storage. AT&T’s network is fine almost everywhere I go. I have relatives in Alabama who can only use Verizon in the boondocks, so that’s about my only problem area. I’m not buying a new phone for that.

As for the first poster and others like him/her, a good many of us don’t use the device primarily for the phone capability. I use the iPod way more than anything else, and I use news apps like AP Mobile and NY Times to read news. I also have access to e-mail anywhere, and the Maps app lets me find stores or other nearby businesses. I might use 200 minutes of voice per month.

Just have to make a few statements for the record. First, people who mention that CDMA is old tech, and way outdated… you are WRONG. GSM has been around since 1987… I’ve heard many industry folk compare the differences between the two techs as processor iterations. Like GSM is a pentium 3 and CDMA is a pentium 4… sure, they’re both old and slow, but CDMA is NEWER and FASTER. Where did you people get this information? GSM is more of a world wide standard, but it’s slower. My EVDO Rev. A. connection with Sprint has been clocked as high as 3mbps, what about your GSM connection? Theoretically the max is 473kbps. for EDGE. Also, GSM has been hacked, what about CDMA? NOPE! Granted, it takes a couple of hours to hack, so it’s not like, “hey let’s instantaneously hack this call through GSM and see what they’re up to!” but it has been hacked, and CDMA hasn’t been hacked. CDMA is newer tech, and GSM has been making inroads in the U.S. only because it’s a world standard, and we’re a global economy. In other words, you can take your GSM phone with you around the world. But guess what? Even that’s silly… the charges for doing so are outrageous. I’ve traveled plenty, and I always just bring a GSM phone pop in a local pay as you go sim, and go about my business. I spent a year in Scotland, and I loved how cheap an option this was. Now… go do your research, and discover that I’m 100% correct about GSM vs. CDMA, and then go cry yourself to sleep for being duped by a powerful standards agency into believing the old tech was the better tech. Meanwhile, I’ll be enjoying my CDMA Rev. A connection, a WiMax 4G modem, and in a few months the first 4G phone in the United States.

ps. the iPhone 4G is the fourth generation iPhone… it’s going to run on a 3G network. It’s moniker has nothing to do with connection speed. It’ll be a lovely device, on a slower network. You should pray it becomes available on a CDMA Rev. A. connection. Either that, or on t-mobile’s HSPA+ network enhancement, which will feature speeds of up to 22mbps.

J. Harper

March 30th, 2010
8:52 pm

Ohh, one more thing, I didn’t spell it out in my last post. If Verizon gets the iPhone I may buy one for my girlfriend, who’s an Apple fan, but I’ll be sticking with my original plan of nabbing the HTC Evo 4G, which has a 30% larger screen, 8mp camera (rear), 1.3mp camera (front), 30k+ apps and counting, and a 4G network. The iPhone still has the better GPU, as in better graphics for games, but not by much… I think for a while Apple will still have the most elegant solution for average smart phone users. That lead is quickly diminishing though, which is good, because Apple can certainly push themselves more than they have.

J. Harper

March 30th, 2010
8:58 pm

Turns out I didn’t cite the latest iterations of GSM vs. CDMA tech.

GSM limits, 1.9mbps down 0.9mbps up.

CDMA limits, 3.1mbps down 1.8mbps up.

That’s still double the upload speed for CDMA, which does matter for picture messaging and e-mailing and the like, and 50%+ faster downloads. So… what’s the old tech?

J. Harper

March 30th, 2010
9:12 pm

Ugh… still reading all of these comments, and again… the errors are always the same in these arguments. Gotta have Verizon when heading to the backwoods, Sprint okay in the city, but for the full country coverage Verizon is the way to go… why is that exactly? Yep, there’s no denying that “there’s a map for that” and Verizon has the BEST coverage of any carrier in the U.S. I will not deny for a second that in the backwoods of Georgia you’ll find Verizon towers, where Sprint towers are absent. So, yeah, Verizon does have the coverage you need for backwoods Georgia. Except. Here’s the kicker… Sprint leases tower capacity from Verizon and since we’re both CDMA technologies I can roam on Verizon for up to 300mb of data in any given month, and up to like 800 minutes or something like that of voice. So, in a pinch, my network is identical to your more expensive network, and it doesn’t cost me anything extra to use that roaming capacity. In other words, I’m thrilled Verizon has such an expansive network that’s larger and better filled in than Sprints. Because I’m typically inside of Atlanta, and I rarely roam, but when I do roam on occasion, well, thanks for the loaner Verizon. Now I’ll continue to read through the comments for something else to write about.

I have an iPhone and I love it. I had Nextel/Sprint before and that sucked. I would have dropped calls while driving on I-20(metro) and on I-285. The iPhone has everything I need (and mouch more) at my fingertips.

My reading of other articles regarding the CDMA iPhone (for Verizon, etc) doesn’t say anything about the not selling the iPhone at AT&T, just providing the phone to additional carriers that supoprt the CDMA structure.

The other articles explained that the reason why it wasn’t previously available on the CDMA networks is that the network was not reliable and too slow. Apple choose to wait since they were assured that he upgrades to the newtwork would come soon. Well, they didn’t and Apple decided to make the phones anyway since they have maximized their massive growth with AT&T.

Since the network for CDMA has not been upgraded yet, they iPhone will not have the same level of service as it has on AT&T. Think about the AT&T commercials – the phone will not be able to talk at browse the internet, do MMS, etc on the CDMA networks until the upgrades are completed.

The iPhone is great, but what really makes it great is a network that allows the iPhone to work at it highest level. The AT&T network is the only one right now that allows talk and internet brosing at the same time, and the 3G network is faster than the CDMA 3G.

Also, I live in Covington, which appears to be the only area that is not 3G in the metro area. My service is still pretty good, though internet is pretty slow on the non-3G signal.

I have learned my lesson and after being a Verizon customer for 3 years on my own and 8 years total with my family, I will not be renewing my contract with them! You can’t get service on the phone with the TN call center or in the store on Cobb Parkway (BB shopping center). I’ll be sticking to the BH location near the container store from now on & I can’t wait until Labor Day to move on!

All of these cell phone companies control the airwaves, charge way too much for phones that are made in China, then don’t offer low enough plans to people that are trying to stretch EVERY dollar!

I could not care LESS about Verizon getting an I Phone. All they care about is making revenue for the company, and paying celebrity endorsers such as that can’t sing, fake Ciara.Crazy! As much as those Luke Wilson AT&T commercials bore me I’d rather AT&T offer more competition because Sprint is lagging behind in 3rd place!

Only reason I don’t have an i phone is the fact that I would have to go to AT&T. I have major iphoneitis and have for years. The droids are fine – but just aren’t an iphone. Most of the good apps are only iphone apps.

I have had my iphone for 2 years and have not ever had any problems with the service! I am also amazed with at&t uverse and the cost savings with my bundled service. I think you are missing out if you do not have at&t!!

Mr Teacher Man – The no insurance is an Apple thing, not ATT. They will do the same thing no matter who sells the phone. Just got my iPhone and hopefully it will be the last phone I have to buy. Had a few service problems in Las Vegas but that was during March Madness opening weekend while at the airport. Other than that I love this phone and have not had any problems with CS on ATT.

TnGelding please tell me your responses were both a joke… Because if it wasn’t… WOW!! Technology and progress roll together…. Maybe if you got of your butt and stopped playing Second Life you have some friends to call and you would stop whining about your old a#s DSL… Really DSL?? Were do you live? And what year is it in your world…

I switched from Verizon many years ago. I never had any issues with them, except for all of the surprises in my billing. I don’t love AT&T, but I do like the fact that if anything happens to my phone, I have all of my contacts on a sim card & I can switch phones painlessly without having to re-load my address book. If Verizon gets the iPhone, then I’d like to welcome all of the VZW users to the future, or to what has been available for AT&T users for years. I’m a Mac!!!

I plan to get an iPhone soon. I mean, if the technology is available to us, I say we should use it. I admit, I won’t be getting those “useless” apps, I mean, a Lightsaber app? Seriously? If it were a real one, maybe. But I like having info at my fingertips. Some of these hicks call us “tech junkies” as if it were a bad thing. I’m proud of it! It’s time to move on from the telegraph, people. Welcome to the real world!

Patiently waiting for the iPhone on Sprint. Love Sprint service and prices – when they get the iPhone 4G this summer, it will be a good thing and worth the wait.

I love my iPhone and I have absolutely no problems with AT&T. Been with them for years (BellSouth Mobility – Cingular – AT&T) and lived in multiple places in the metro Atlanta area. No real issues at all. Not sure why everyone hates AT&T.

AT&T is the worst period. If you don’t think so call them and speak to a computer for 20 minutes. Then when you finally get a live person they transfer you to several departments only to get another computer. I dumped their land-line and DSL and got Time Warner cable for my Web. It is cheaper & 3 times faster… As soon as AT&T lose their IPhone exclusivity they are going down… Sell your stock now…. Thx GG

I would love to have an iPhone but I just bought a new Blackberry because of the ATT issues. I have heard way to many horror stories.

Have had Vzw for years and love their coverage, especially in remote areas when we travel on vacation – I’m the only one in a group who has coverage on a mountain top or in remote areas out West. My phone probably drops as many calls as the next persons – I’m sure a sign of a co. trying to have their technology keep up with increasing demand. I will wait for the iPhone to come to Vzw and still may not get it. My understanding is that Apple offered the iPhone to Vzw first and Vzw turned them down – very shortsighted of them. As one viewer pointed out – Vzw very slow to bring technology to their customers. Also, Vzw needs to get their CDMA act together before they launch the iPhone or it will be a bust for them – multi-tasking is a necessity with this phone and CDMA defeats the purpose & the price of this phone. BTW, I HATE their new policy that you MUST purchase a date package with certain phones. With 5 family members, i.e. 5 phones – that’s $50 extra dollars per month!! I like these phones even w/o using data pkg. & I don’t allow my kids to access the internet with their phones. Now we’re being forced to pay for something we won’t use for the nicer phones we want to buy – i.e. – text msg. threading, visual voicemail, fullpage touch screen, better cameras, touch screen & qwerty keyboards, etc. What happened to freedom of choice??

Verizon was born from AT&T

or did everyone forget about that already?

I just think it’s funny how Verizon users hate AT&T when their corporate legacy was completely dependent on AT&T’s existence. Kind of like…. biting the hand that fed.

AT&T service since 1996. IPhone since 2008. All good here in ATL, also was in San Fran and used mapping and calling exstensively (simulataneos data and voice going on) and gues what NO ISSUES. It was pretty intense too as we were have to find meetings in a totally foreign city. The little tracker kept us right on point was we drove over the hills. So…just saying, works fine for me and I am a fairly heavy user.
