This recession is not discriminating between for-profit and non-profit companies.
The American Cancer Society has eliminated 140 positions nationwide, including about 80 in Atlanta, AJC reporter Shelia Poole writes.
The cuts occurred last week in its national home office, which is based in Atlanta.
The sour economy has taken its toll on the organization, as it has on other non-profits that have seen financial donations decrease, Poole reports.
Contributions are expected to be off by more than 10 percent during the 2009 fiscal year ended Aug. 31, compared to the same period a year ago, according to ACS spokesman Greg Donaldson.
More than 1,000 people work in the national operation, many of whom are in Atlanta.
