They’re not earth-shattering events in themselves, but two developments in today’s news are further examples of the dynamic changes taking place in the business world today.
On one side of town, the movie theater that bears Magic Johnson’s name at Greenbriar Mall — opened amid much hoopla 13 years ago – will show its last movie on Sunday.
AJC reporter Rachel Tobin Ramos writes that the theater owner, Kansas City, Mo.,-based AMC Entertainment, said the 12-screen complex is underperforming.
Ex-NBA star Johnson is no longer a partner in the theater, though it has borne his name since he invested $8 million to build the complex in 1996.
Meanwhile downtown, the Commerce Club, the place where Atlanta’s leaders have met to debate the big issues for nearly 50 years, and the One Ninety One Club, a luxurious social hub for business elites, are joining forces, AJC reporter David Markiewicz writes.
The two clubs announced Monday they plan to merge their memberships and relocate to new quarters on the 49th floor of One Ninety One Peachtree Tower downtown, the same building that now houses the One Ninety One Club.
The new club will go by the Commerce Club name and will be run by a board of directors made up of members of each club.
In moving north, Markiewicz writes, the Commerce Club will be more in the center of a business executive base that has migrated over the years. The club’s membership roster has declined recently, to 796 members from 977 in December 2007. The One Ninety One Club said membership is about flat from last year.
