My colleague Andre Jackson summed up the local chamber’s “New Economy” game plan quite simply: “The riches are in the niches.”
Even these four segments need to be further broken down into smaller niches, so corporate recruiters can be more effective.
For example, the supply chain segment includes transportation support, high growth wholesale, warehousing and storage, and air and rail transportation.
Technology includes software, wireless telecom, data management and Internet content.
Health includes global health and communicable disease, medical biotech, medical research and agricultural biotech.
Business services include professional services, engineering and architecture, graphic design and marketing.

So, 11 votes. What does this mean? This poll is: not interesting, not important, not relevant, the niches are wrong for ATL, people don’t understand the niches, only 11 people are reading this column?

I agree that these segments are key areas for growth in Atlanta. However, since technology is pervasive in just about every industry, I would argue that technology crosses each of the other segments, rather than standing on its own. Based on what we are seeing at Xerox, business services – in particular managed print services – is certainly a strong growth sector as companies continue to reevaluate their business processes to uncover additional ways of cutting costs.
