Anti-Immigration bandwagon picks up steam

Despite passing what was considered to be one of the toughest immigration laws in the country just five years ago, the Georgia General Assembly just can’t seem to resist the urge to show just how tough it is on immigration.  Following last year’s Republican primary, which saw several candidates call for a “tough” anti-immigration law “like Arizona’s,” and one candidate even recommending setting up a “Guantanamo-style” prison for illegal aliens in the state, it was only a matter of time before the General Assembly this year took up such legislation.

Currently, there are two competing immigration bills vying for attention under the Gold Dome.

State Rep. Matt Ramsey (R-Peachtree City) is sponsoring HB 87 – the “Illegal Immigration Reform Act” — which would require all employers in the state to ensure the status of prospective employees by using the federal E-Verify system; a program opponents of the bill have argued is plagued by questionable accuracy. HB 87 also requires counties and municipalities to ensure that new businesses entering into their jurisdiction are authorized to use E-Verify before a business license or occupational certificate can be issued.

The bill also imposes escalating civil penalties and prison sentences for transporting, concealing or harboring illegal immigrants; and even proposes to make it a crime for someone to “encourage” an illegal immigrant to come to Georgia.  Any vehicle used to give an illegal alien a ride would be subject to forfeiture.  Importantly, and similar to Arizona’s 2010 law (which already has been ruled unconstitutional by a federal district court), HB 87 empowers police to detain someone if they suspect the person may be in the country unlawfully.

If enacted, it is certain this legislation will face constitutional challenge in the courts.  In fact, recognizing the likelihood that some of the provisions now in his legislation would likely fall as a result of such challenges, Ramsey already has made numerous changes to his bill.

In the upper chamber, Sen. Jack Murphy (R-Cumming) has introduced SB 40, a slightly less comprehensive bill that still requires businesses in Georgia to be E-Verify compliant. However, reflecting the reality that much of the tough-on-illegal-immigration debate is more about politics than principle,  Murphy’s bill carves out a huge exemption for the state’s agricultural community; an obvious attempt to appease the Georgia Farm Bureau, which announced its opposition to bills that would place a financial burden on farmers dependent on migrant workers.

Politics aside, it is interesting to witness so many Republican legislators who profess allegiance to principles of federalism and more limited government police power, tripping over themselves to support legislation such as these immigration-based bills.  Greatly expanding the power of law state and local law enforcement to stop and detain people, premised on a power that resides with the federal, not state government to begin with, hardly fits traditional definitions of “conservative.”  When it comes to immigration, consistency is often not a component of the debate.

Apparently the cost to taxpayers of measures such as HB 47 figures little in the debate as well.  Similar legislation introduced in Utah, for example, is estimated to cost taxpayers in that state upwards of $11 million dollars.

With the Peach State facing a $1 billion-plus budget gap, pushing for an immigration law with a hefty price tag attached to it, and the constitutionality of which is demonstrably in doubt to begin with, would appear not to be a particularly wise use of our legislators’ time.  Perhaps they need to be reminded that immigration is a federal responsibility, and that the new folks in charge of the US House just might be more receptive to forcing Uncle Sam to do his job than the prior management.  Then again, that would be effort less likely to result in headlines back home.

LA give the proof, show me statistics…….I will wait………you can’t because it’s not true. It’s obvious who you are which is of no surprise. So here are my statistics to back my statements. Bc if you do some research welfare was created for whites only back in the day, blacks couldn’t receive public assistance. Only smart people have evidence to prove their point. Also there more white men are in jail than any other race. Check below

TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families)
http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/ofa/data-reports/annualreport8/chapter10/chap10.htm#5

Two of three TANF adult recipients were members of minority groups. Thirty-eight percent of adult recipients were white, 37 percent were African-American, 20 percent were Hispanic, 1.7 percent were Asian, and 1.5 percent were Native American. Most TANF adult recipients were U.S. citizens. There were about 60,000 non-citizens (i.e., 5.9 percent of TANF adults) residing legally in this country.

Check the link about to verify.

Now to Crime Statistics. Federal Bureau of Prisons report
http://www.bop.gov/news/quick.jsp#2

Inmates By Race
White: 121,045 (57.7 %)
Black: 81,445 (38.8 %)
Native American: 3,760 (1.8 %)
Asian: 3,520 (1.7 %)

Current as of December 2010, check the link above to verify.

So LA where is your proof??? Any more dumb assumptions you want to make??? Make informed and educated statements with evidence or you sound like a fool when proven wrong.

Ok Tell the Truth for Once…your point is??? Because you obviously didn’t make one. If you know anything about economics and business you would know its cheaper to pay some 20-25 dollars an hour and pay no kind of insurance, healthcare or 401k than it is to pay you the legal way. Again welfare and socialized public assistance programs were created for poor Whites back in the day, do your research, no other minority groups were even allowed to receive any kind of assistance. Over time things slowly changed. I will give you the statistics below to show there are more whites on public assistance than blacks, thats the original arguement here. Check TANF below. And who is the general black population??? Because I don’t have any kids nor am I on public assistance. White folks stop at one child really, please show me the statistics on that. Spending much higher in the black community, show me the statistics on that. Back up your statements with proof if not your point is only an opinion not fact. I keep hearing “these are jobs Americans can do” then why aren’t you all out there doing them??? Exactly because the average American won’t go pick fruits, vegetables, do any kind of hard labor nowadays. Don’t be mad at so called “illegal immigrants” boycott the companies that employ them, oh but that requires you to do some research to find who is doing the illegal hiring. I’m sure Wal-Mart is doing it, so boycott them and probably most Fortune 500 companies who operate manufacturing plants of some kind here. I can’t stand ignorance.

“it is interesting to witness so many Republican legislators who profess allegiance to principles of federalism and more limited government police power”. Not quite the case Mr. Barr. There are a number of areas where most Americans (not just Republicans) want more federal intervention; one of those is immigration law enforcement. The feds have been missing in action there.

Dear LA: – If you can be a little objective in all your comments that would be much appreciated. You don’t have to answer to ALL comments written by other people that are as US citizens as you are. They have their own opinions and right to vote for or against the law. The same right you have. You don’t need to make fun or discredit their opinions. If you support the idea of this law, then support it by real numbers and real facts. Do not not support or try to sell this law by putting stereotyping ideas of all immigrants in the minds of others reading this article. I have read all your comments and the way you put the actions of some immigrants does not mean they are all the same, not even the majority of them. Assuming that ALL illegal immigrants don’t pay taxes is IGNORANT. There are a lot of illegal immigrants who pay taxes, and you have to admit that. Well, may be you didn’t know that FACT. Also, to my knowledge, every time I buy food, clothes, services, even a soft drink at a gas station I have to pay taxes. I didn’t know illegal immigrants had the privilege of avoiding this kind of taxes.

Now, focusing to another comment, the one about passing a law declaring English to be the official language of the state? (not an LA comment)…this really hit my intelligence. I can’t believe there are people that feel so proud of speaking only ONE language in this country. Don’t they know the more languages they know the better? Limiting your country or state to ONE language limits the capabilities, skills and intelligence of your own people. We want a law to admit “Yes, we AMERICANS are ingorant enough to speak only English. We don’t want another official language”. We should leave it as it is, OPEN to anybody. If I want to speak 2, 3 or more languages, I will! Don’t impose me which one should be my official language. Please take Canada or Europe as an example, even Latinamerican countries. Why we expect everybody to speak English, and we can’t even say a word in other language when we leave the US? Oh right! We don’t ever leave the US, because only 30% of Americans have passports. Such a low number for such a rich country. That’s why we have the image of AMERICANS=IGNORANTS around the world. Thanks to people that made the comment about passing a law to make English the official language.

We do need an immigration law, but well written and executed. Not a low based on thoughts of haters, based on fair of losing power. We need a law based on facts and costs. The biggest fair in this country is that the power is not under the white man anymore, the power is diminishing from his hands. The power in this country is now shared among whites, blacks, asians, indians, europeans, etc. That is the real power of a country, when is on the hands of all the people. We are all Americans, regardless of the color or race. Even the children of all those illegal immigrants that everybody is hating now, they ARE Americans (like it or not) and when passing a law their rights should be under consideration too. That’s a fact and you can erase it. Unless you can take back time.

Yep, and they don’t pay income taxes nor do they pay into SS. They don’t pay for Medicaid etc…

“Assuming that ALL illegal immigrants don’t pay taxes is IGNORANT. ”

They don’t pay income taxes nor do they pay into SS.

Oops, YES, they pay the so called Income Taxes. Even with a TIN, you pay income taxes as self-employed. You pay to the state and the fed government. You pay to the SS too. And since it seems that you don’t know, all those taxes paid to the SS under a TIN don’t ever get claimed. So the SS uses all that money to allocate it who knows to what. Illegal immigrants are only able to claim all that money paid to SS,medicaid, etc when they legalize their immigration status. There is a process to transfer all that money under that TIN to a social security number. That’s why illegal immigrants that have the option to legalize their situation pay taxes, so they can later put it under their social. So don’t tell me they don’t pay income taxes when there are people doing this every day and OUR country has processes established to do so.

How do you know I don’t like white people? how do you know I’m not white? who do you know I don’t have a white mother or father? Your only true is that you are racist, that’s why you try to impose laws like this one to your own people.

FEAR!!!!!!!! Re-re-re take English…please tell me Mr. LA how many languages can you read, write, listen to as a Native speaker? sorry about my typo, I totally missed that…but it doesn’t mean I don’t read or write English. I think you were able to understand everything I wrote. Do you know how many Americans can’t write English and they are AMERICANS? They aren’t less smart than you or less Americans than you because of that.

Yeah gee, imagine that. Imagine that the official language in Mexico is Spanish, French in France, German in Germany, Mandarin in China….. (Darling that’s not under their constitution…that’s what I meant)

~Yeah, that’s what happens when you are the greatest country on Earth. Not many people dying to get into North Korea, Cuba or Iran~

I love my country and I’m proud of it too, but saying that we are the greatest country on Earth is not true. We have issues/problems to solve like any other country. That’s why we are intereacting here, right? This is not a response to a 30% of a 308+ people country, with incomes higher than in Europe and Canada. UK with 80% and Canada with 65% of people with passports. That just demonstrates how closed minded we are. That’s a fact of our society and we have to fix it.

~I just did and there is nothing you can do about it. Disrespectful? Sorry but I don’t respect you in the first place. ~
It’s totally fine if you don’t respect me. That shows how well educated you are. I DO respect you because you are a human being that have an opinion and a voice. To make this country great the opinions of EVERYBODY should count, not only a few, not only mine. That’s why I respect you, because you love this country as much as I do. That’s a common feeling and we can’t fight over that.

Dear EducadtedBlackMan: Thaks for all information shared in your comments. I have learned some facts I didn’t know. Don’t lose it against LA, when people can’t face with facts and true they attack with insults and disrespect. Oh well, he/she doesn’t respect us…I guess he is trying to convince aliens then? If he doesn’t respect the people of his/her own country then why is this person worrying about supporting this or any law for the people he doesn’t respect at all? It doesn’t make sense. You won’t change this person’s mind. What frustrates me tough is that he pass this kind of hate to other that may not have any knowledge in this or other type of topic. Spend your time sharing your point of view with people that are worth it. I like your comments.

I’m talking about humanitarian or military help. Those are issues involving the governments and related to bilateral relationships.

Well have a good day everybody. We won’t fix the immigration problem. This problem is transfered from president to president and who knows when this will get fixed. AMERICANS ARE WAY OFF ON REAL IMMIGRATION STATS
The immigration debate is being fueled by contentious divisions and Arigona and Georgia are smack-dab in the middle. Recent research finds that Americans are poorly informed about the real statistics on immigration; but when informed of the true stats, their opinions change to more lenient views toward migrants. For example, the average American believes that 39 percent of the U.S. population was born abroad. The true figure is less than 14 percent:

http://www.ethicsoup.com/2011/02/immigration-study-ill-informed-americans-fuel-contentious-divisions.html

Another misconception is that immigratiion increases crime rates and that many who want to immigrate are criminals. Studies using statistics from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports and U..S. Census data were used to analyze 459 American cities with a minimum of 50,000 population and found crime does not increase. In fact, although America’s illegal-immigrant poopulation doubled from 1994 to 2004, violenty-crime rate actually DECLINED 35 percent:
